The Club attempts to provide our youth
with an appreciation of their worth and
a commitment to excellence.
The Blackhawks Athletic Club will
firmly implant and develop the youths of
our community these principles;
good character, courage, responsibility,
fair play, sportsmanship, respect for rules
and regulations, as well as high
educational expectations. This mission can
only be achieved through parental
and community partnerships; providing
supervised competitive sports activities.

Blackhawks History
The program is designed to teach children how to complete in athletics at a young age. The
Blackhawks Athletic Club prides itself on providing a quality youth athletic program. Established in
1968 as a year round basketball program, operating out of the Little Fellowship House Located at 27th
Street and Columbia Ave., now Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Initially, organized by George Singleton and
later joined by Reginald Mtumishi. The Blackhawks Organization is interested in creating more than
just athletics; but also creating Future Leaders of America.
1970's
The Philadelphia Recreation Department approached Reginald Mtumishi, who had become the Director
of Little Fellowship House, about entering a football league based at the newly constructed Recreation
facility at 11th Street and Columbia Avenue. The Blackhawks Athletic Club, Inc. was established and
incorporated the same year. By agreement, the Blackhawks became a founding member of the Martin
Luther King Football League, which initially included approximately 8 teams from the North Central
Philadelphia area; but later expanded to include teams from across the city as well as Camden, NJ. The
football team, guided by Moses Williams, Richard Riddick, Reginald Mtumishi, and others were
consistent play-off contenders and captured the League Championship in 1971, with an undefeated
season. In 1975, the basketball program was discontinued due in part to a coaching shortage. The
football program then became a member of the Police Athletic League (PAL) Football league.
1980's & 1990's
During this decade, changes followed the decision by PAL to drop the football program. The
Blackhawks became founding members of the Liberty Football Conference, relocated to Temple
University's AstroTurf facility at 15th and Norris Streets, adding Cheerleading. These changes resulted
in Blackhawks winning its First Football and Cheerleading Championships. The pattern of changes
continued in the 1990's. A two-year stint in the Burlington County Midget Football League (now Pop
Warner), resulted in a Championship in 1990, followed by a return in 1991. Additional Cheerleading
and Football teams were added and the program continued as one of the conferences standard
contenders in terms of production on and off the field, with consistency and stability.
2000's
Measured growth continued in the 2000's with a return to 11th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue as a home
base and even more Football and Cheer teams were added, with increased Parental involvement. The
creation of a Parent Advisory Board was initiated, and the Football and Cheerleading Championships
continued. Pop Warner Regional involvement and participation in Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration
have become highlights of the 2000's to date. There remains much more to be done. The academic
requirement of our student athletes needs are to be better addressed.
With the passing of our Patriarch, Reginald Mtumishi, in October 2009, much sorrow was felt
throughout the Blackhawks Organization. Nevertheless, many milestones were also acquired!!
The Blackhawks Athletic Club celebrated his memory by clinching its first Eastern District Regional
Championship and playing for the Pop Warner Young Scholar Super Bowl Championships in Walt
Disney World, Florida!!

It is a proven fact that children that have something to do are least likely to get in trouble. The
Blackhawks Athletic Club has been giving the youth of North Central Philadelphia something to do
for over 40 years. We are blessed to have grown from an organization that offered just football to
other sports that include cheerleading, wrestling, baseball and basketball. We provide all equipment
needed to participate in our programs and subsidize registration fees. We strive to keep the expens-
es down for the youth who might not otherwise be able to afford to participate.
With this in mind, we are currently seeking sponsorship and/ or donations for our organization so
that we may continue to keep our youth off of the mean streets of the city. We are looking to upgrade
some equipment items and uniforms for this season so we are looking for sponsorship and /or
donations for helmets, shoulder pads and uniforms for football and cheerleading. Your contribution
will provide our organization with the funds needed to continue to grow. It is our sincere wish to
continue to provide these services to as many youth as possible. We are a non-profit organization
and your donation is tax deductible.
Think of what you give not so much as a charitable donation, but as an investment! There is
gratification knowing that your contribution will know will be hard at work for the youth in our
community. An old African proverb reminds us that "It takes a village to raise a child". Why not
partner with us to build a village where our children can become Leaders, Role Models, and
Entrepreneurs.
