MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It is my pleasure and honour to be given the opportunity to serve you as the
General Manager of SAFYC. As a former national sailor and having worked in the
seasports department for the past 7 years, I seek to continue our strong tradition
in sailing. I will also work towards improving the service standards and together
with your help, make the Club more vibrant and lively.
I have seen a steady stream of members and friends visiting the Club with the
opening of our new facilities and we are happy to welcome more in the coming
weeks with the activities that we have in store for everyone.
We have increased the number of Get-Kids-Afloat courses, Basic Sailing Courses
as well as PPCDL to accommodate the positive demands for these programmes. Our Bi-monthly Trophy Races are
ongoing for its 2021 season and a more detailed recap of the action from the January sessions can be found on page
9. The Horsburgh Challenge Regatta is back this year for its 16th edition! Congratulations to the skipper and crews of
Born in Fire for pulling off a brilliant win of the race! A job well done goes out to the other skippers and crews as well
Message
for their top-notch performance and camaraderie with the other teams.
Although we are still unable to hold social events at the Club, I am delighted to share that our regattas are ongoing. We
invite you to participate and bring along your friends to join in the fun! Our 17th SAFYC Regatta for Dinghy is scheduled
for 17th & 18th April 2021 and our Optimist Regatta for the 24th & 25th April 2021. Sailing kakis, block your calendars
for our next Bi-monthly Trophy Race scheduled on 8 May 2021. To get a more comprehensive overview of our events,
turn to page 21.
With travel restrictions still in place, we invite members to book your staycations at the Club for a nice quiet retreat
with your loved ones. Our 3 private rooms can be booked via email or you may contact our Member Relations Officers.
We also have meeting rooms available for bookings which are perfect for group discussions. If you have not visited
the Club recently, bring your family and friends to explore the new facilities we have at our clubhouse!
In our efforts to keep the Club a safe environment, I seek your cooperation to wear a mask at all times. I understand
that it can be inconvenient but this is for our safety and well-being. We must be vigilant if we are to beat this pandemic
and it is crucial that everyone plays their part.
Lastly, do visit our website and follow us on our social media accounts for more updates on our courses, promotions,
and announcements!
We look forward to seeing you at the Club.

The sailing season is finally here! A
fantastic sunrise and the best winds
welcomed our competitors on the first
day of the race. Our Horsburgh Challenge
Regatta was held on the weekend of
13 and 14 March 2021 at Changi Sailing
Club. The day started with the skippers
registering their crew before proceeding
to board their own boats. We started
the race at daybreak around 7am with
our Commodore, RADM Aaron Beng,
and GM, Mr. Teo Wee Chin, giving the
warning signal to the sailors. Capt. Jerry
Lau, our very own Captain of Sail was
also present to wish our competitors fair
winds and following seas!
The first boat to the finish line for the
race on Saturday was Born in Fire with
Thomas Reckefuss as skipper followed
by Invictus with Justin Lean as skipper.
Rumbottle of Lee Yi Min came at third
place followed by Shardana of Neil
Thomas and lastly Innesfree with
Alfred Leung as skipper. Unfortunately,
Windflirt and Millenium 2 retired and did
not complete the race on the first day.

Sunday was a whirlwind of sailing conditions as the weather served us with sunny morning
and a pouring afternoon rain! Born in Fire is really on fire as they dominated the 2nd day of
Horsburgh Challenge with 2 consecutive wins of the two races of that day! Congratulations to
Thomas Reckefuss and his crew for their fantastic overall win for this year’s race! A big thank
you goes out to Changi Sailing Club as well for their continuous support. As we are adhering
to safety measures due to the on-going precautions against COVID-19, no awarding assembly
was held and trophies were given out to the respective skippers of the winning boats.
For people who are interested to participate in our regattas, now is a good time to start learning
how to sail! If you have never sailed before that’s not a problem, we open our doors to all levels
of experience and welcome anybody who is keen to learn how to sail. Our Competent Crew
Course is a great course for aspiring sailors who wish to be introduced to the wonderful world
of keelboat racing! Visit our website for the upcoming course dates and for more information
on registration.

We had a full weekend training for the Commodores

the Horsburgh Challenge, where we mainly trained
manoeuvres, kite sets and drops as well as mark

Further we met on the Thursday prior the race and
discussed some options, positions and possible

to the change of course.
Any interesting/challenging experience that
happened during any of the races?
One thing is surely the excitement on the evening

Holidays are best spent under
the sun! Our new batch of Get-
Kids-Afloat (GKA) kids had
their lessons during the school
holidays in March! Sailing is such
an incredibly versatile sport and
it can be enjoyed by kids once
they have the basic knowledge
and skills to sail on their own!
The first day of the course is
theory lessons and getting the
kids familiar with the parts of
the boat. This is where they
also get introduced to common
sailing terms that their coaches
will refer to when teaching them
hands-on.
The next days are the most
exciting ones! Finally they can go
out at sea and apply what they
have learned from the theory
lessons. This is when kids use
their own strategy on how they
will be able to maneuver the boat
easily to their advantage and
how to play with the waves and
the wind on their favor. Kids will
be provided their own Optimist
boat. This boat is perfect for the
program and is an ideal starter’s
boat for kids.
Our programme offers a simple
training pathway for kids wanting
to try out or get started in sailing.
Meeting new friends is a bonus
too as sailing is more fun with
a little bit of competition! There
is no experience necessary for
this course and kids 7 to 15 years
old are welcome to join! If you
have missed this round of GKA
course, we are conducting more
courses in April as well as in
the June school holidays! Make
sure to register early as this is an
in-demand course and we are
always happily fully-booked!

or email us at seasports@safyc.

on fully-booked dates and other
available dates for the course.
7BI-MONTHLY TROPHY RACE
If your weekdays are busy with commitments,
a friendly sailing race in the weekend is for you!
Sailing in the afternoon breeze is a beautiful way
to ease into the weekend. Our first race of the Bi-
Monthly Trophy Race (BTR) for 2021 was held on 16
January 2021. Congratulations to Zephyr for their
impressive win!
Knowing where the wind is blowing from and
at what angle the boat lies to the wind direction
is critical for the competitors to sail their boats
efficiently, trim the sails properly and protect the
crew from an accidental tack and, more critically,
an accidental jibe. Even a race like ours can
encounter challenging wind conditions, and often
with the added complication of lots of obstacles
to contend with such as the constant sea traffic of
vessels passing by the East Johor Straits.
No matter your level of experience, our races are
exciting, family friendly and fun to participate in
and develop your sailing skills! And the best part
is, you don’t need your own boat to get involved!
Skippers are always on the lookout for an extra
crew (or two!).
9WEDDING FAIR
Our first ever Wedding Fair in partnership
with MegaXpress took place at our
Lazarus Ballroom on 27th and 28th
February 2021! Various wedding vendors
came together and showcased their
wonderful offers and packages to
aspiring husbands and wives to be! It
takes a few months to a year to plan that
dream wedding that is why wedding

for couples. There are so many details
that go into creating the most special

is to present them with the best possible
options for everything they may need
for their big day: Breath-taking bridal

event videography and many more!
Some well-loved suppliers included in
this beautiful exhibit were Rio Diamonds,
Studio Five Weddings, SQEEN Bridal,

Regalia, Reenz Bridal and many more!
Special promotions and discounts was
made available to couples who book on
the spot!
The fair was exclusively for couples
who RSVP’d in advance and the event
was hosted by DJ Ana. A few segments
were conducted with the participation
of the vendors such as the “How to take
care of your Ring” by Rio Diamonds
and styling demos for plus-sized brides
with Jannathul as well as make-up and
hairstyle demos with Jalil from Sujaka
Bridal.
We definitely had a productive and fun
2-days wedding fair! A big congratulations

How did your sailing journey come about?
My parents introduced me to GKA during the September school holiday
when I was in Primary 1. I enjoyed the course and decided to take up
sailing as my CCA in school the following year.
What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
I enjoy sailing fast especially during strong wind conditions. I feel like a
F1 driver in the sea when sailing at high speed.
What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I enjoy going for trainings as I get to meet sailors from other schools.
I am also thankful to Coach Low, Coach Xiao Dong, Coach Gracina,

during trainings.
Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
My most memorable sailing experience was the last race during Gold

regattas. I had a good start and led the pack after my first tack. Towards
the end of the course, another sailor overtook me, but I maintained my
composure and managed to regain the lead. In the end, I won the race
and had a taste of my first bullet. The feeling was exhilarating. Name:
