CALL FOR POSTER – flash presentation
                       EuroScience Open Forum 2018
                            Toulouse (France), 9 – 14 July 2018

           – SHARING SCIENCE: TOWARDS NEW HORIZONS –

This call seeks proposals of abstracts for the ESOF Poster session.
For the first time, a poster session is an integral part of the ESOF programme. Poster
presentation is a way to visually present research results or relevant initiatives. The aim is to
foster networking and contacts between participants, and to allow presentation of
results/initiatives over several days in a different way than in other sessions. This ensures a
high visibility and offers a possibility of visiting posters to all participants who so wish.
Although poster presentations are not restricted to students and young researchers (who are
less represented among session speakers), this call is especially important for them.
Posters will be exhibited in dedicated areas with specific slots for their authors to be present
and explain their poster with possibility of flash presentations; moments for visiting posters will
be highlighted in the general programme.

Abstract submissions for posters must represent sound science or relevant initiatives related
to science, innovation or dialogue science/society, and should be understandable for scientists
outside the specific discipline as well as for other ESOF attendees (students, industry, science
journalists, social actors and policy makers).

General Poster Session
The General Poster session is open to all ESOF2018 attendees.
Accepted poster abstracts will be available in the ESOF2018 online programme and the
meeting app.

Student Poster Competition
The Student Poster Competition recognises the efforts of students working towards
undergraduate, graduate or doctoral-level degrees. Each applicant can only submit one poster
abstract as principal author.
Posters will be judged by an international jury during the meeting. In each category the winners
will receive a certificate and a reward.
Accepted poster abstracts will be available in the 2018 ESOF online programme and the
meeting app.

Flash Oral Presentation
Presenters will be assigned a specific time where they will give a two-three minute oral
presentation close to their poster in front of meeting attendees.

                                                                                                 1

Context of ESOF 2018
ESOF 2018 (9 – 14 July) will take place in Toulouse, a genuine city of science and innovation.
The year 2018 is also designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Toulouse has
ancient roots, not only as a historical Roman city, but also as a pioneer in academic tradition
and innovative practices. Examples include the “Académie des Jeux floraux” which was the
first academy in Europe, and many remarkable scientific figures, such as the mathematician
Pierre de Fermat and renowned Nobel award winners in chemistry, physiology, medicine and
economy, born or established in Toulouse. The Occitanie Region, which capital is Toulouse,
is ranked first in France for the ratio of R&D per capita. Toulouse and its region have a leading
position in aeronautics, space industry, biotechnology, health and cancer research, agro-
industry, among other domains.

ESOF 2018 will comprise a number of different programme tracks:
 a Science programme of seminars, workshops and debates of various formats on the
latest research and related policy issues, structured around a programme of keynote
speakers and the latest scientific issues.
 a Science-to-Business programme to explore the major issues for research within
business and industry and the role of universities for business as well as public-private
    partnership endeavours.
 a Careers programme showcasing career opportunities across Europe and beyond for
researchers at all stages of their careers.
 an Exhibition to showcase the best of academic, public and private research and
innovative approaches in Europe and beyond.
 a Public engagement programme, Science in the City.
 a Forum to host other meetings, satellite events and networking opportunities (e.g. science
policy advisers, young researchers’ associations, student parliament and science media).

                                                                                                  3
