Lifelong career development for all: careers services that work for everyone

1. Very supportive of the Gatsby benchmarks with a few important caveats – benchmark 1
     and 8
2. The statutory duty to include careers education in the curriculum should be reinstated
     and extended to age 18
3. Problems of a school-based model of careers guidance need to be addressed – young
people not in school; funding and sustainability
4. All careers advisers should be professionally qualified and ideally on the UK Register of
     Career Development Professionals
5. Need for investment in the career development sector: a) new Quality in Careers
Standard as the single externally assessed award for quality in career guidance b)
capacity building in schools and colleges c) bursary funding to support the training of
     careers advisers
6. The current National Careers Service should be reconstituted into a truly all-age,
     lifelong career development service
7. The Government should initiate a campaign to improve the prestige of careers guidance
