Challenge Melbourne Feb 1 2015 eGuide - EVENT
DAVID HANSEN
Managing Director, SuperSprint Events

Dear Competitor,

Welcome to Challenge Melbourne 2015. We are excited about this year’s event with such a great elite and age group field
including over 120 interstate and 20 international competitors. We are introducing a number of key improvements including
new bike compound layout, better swim course, stricter enforcing of drafting by TA officials, amendments to the run course,
better post race recovery area and live streaming.

Our focus is to provide you with a great race and event experience. It has always been our goal in the 29 years we have
been in business to look after athletes and this is also one of the key goals of the Challenge Family. We thank GIANT for
again setting up the GIANT Fan Zone on the Run course.

We would like to thank Terra Firma our presenting partner along with GIANT, Hammer, Brooks, Pure Blonde, Herald Sun
and support sponsors along with all the authorities for supporting the staging of such a major event in Melbourne. We would
also like to thank all the TA officials, triathlon clubs, Elwood Lifesaving club and 100’s of marshals that help us make this
race happen.

Finally we would like to thank you for supporting Challenge Melbourne and hope you have a great race we look forward to
seeing you cross the finish line!

All the best
Kind regards

David Hansen

MARCUS ALTMANN
CEO, Challenge Family Asia Pacific

It’s great to welcome everyone back to a new season of racing and Challenge Family’s second year in Australia kicking off
with Challenge Melbourne.

The demand for places this year resulted in a ‘sell out’ status for Challenge Melbourne after delivering a stand out event in
2014. It’s great to see so much support from so many athletes for this spectacular race that has already made its mark with
age group athletes and attracted a world-class professional field.

This is largely due to the amazing team at Supersprint lead by Dave Hansen who work tirelessly behind the scenes and who
are all passionate about giving you the race of your life. So I’d like to say thank you to the organising committee, the
hundreds of volunteers and of course the sponsors and local stakeholders, without whom none of this would be possible.

Melbourne is renowned as the sporting capital of the world and Challenge Melbourne is now included as another iconic
sporting event on the summer calendar.

Challenge Melbourne is a key race for our brand in the Australian market as we continue to lift the standard of the sport and
deliver the ultimate athlete experience at every Challenge event.

What is important to us is that Challenge Family is a real family and that, along with a safe and fair race, you will experience
the same friendly and welcoming atmosphere you experience here in Melbourne at any Challenge event around the world.

In keeping with Challenge Family’s commitment to providing professional athletes a career pathway Challenge Melbourne is
offering a $35,000 prize purse.

I am sure you will all have an amazing event experience and we thank you for choosing to participate at Challenge
Melbourne.

Have a safe, enjoyable race and I look forward to seeing you at the finish line and welcoming you to the Challenge Family.

The swim is a single-lap course with a beach start just south of the Green Point Reserve on Brighton Beach. The
Port Phillip Bay water temperature on race day is expected to be between 18 degrees and 21 degrees, therefore a

Elite Male race start is followed by the Elite Female start. Age group waves will commence 3 minutes after the Elite
Female start and every 2.5 minuthes thereafter. Wave starts will consist of approximately 200 athletes. Position
yourself where you feel most comfortable.

The rectangular shaped swim course is indicated by four highly visible turn buoys and athletes must keep these and
all intermediary marker buoys, on their left hand side, with the exception of the fi nal buoy which will be on the
athletes right hand side. There will be 10 intermediary buoys marking the course.

Once the swimmers have departed the water and arrive on the beach, they head up the ramp towards the Transition
Area in the Green Point car park.

The transition area includes a change tent and toilet for athletes to utilise during T1. Athletes must not leave any
belongings in the change tent.

If you wear glasses, please hand them to the designated volunteer in the swim start area who will place them on a
table at the swim exit for you to pick up without delay. Please ensure they are numbered with your race number.

The start line will be carpeted.

If for any reason you are unable to start the swim, you must hand your ankle timing band in at the Registration
Marquee prior to 6.00am.

BIKE COURSE INFORMATION – 90km CLICK HERE FOR CYCLE MAP
Once athletes have collected their bikes in the Transition Area, they run with their bikes towards the Mount Line on
Beach Road. The 90km bike is an out-and-back, 3 lap course, heading south through the Bayside suburbs of Melbourne.
Athletes head southbound past Sandringham and Black Rock before turning at Centre Way in Mordialloc (opposite Peter
Scullin Reserve), and returning to the venue.

1st and 2nd lap athletes will be required to keep right in order to perform a U-turn in front of the venue to commence their
next lap. 3rd lap cyclists will keep left and turn into the Transition Area.

When heading south to start each lap, athletes need to be aware that a resident access lane will be in place to separate
the occasional resident and athletes on the road. Please do not cross in to this lane.

There will be toilets located on the bike course, at the cycle aid station.

On approaching the venue at the end of the 90 km cycle, cyclists will dismount their bike on the entry to Green Point
Carpark before the dismount mat, and return to the Transition Area for T2.

PLEASE NOTE: The full road closure will be opened at 11:00am.
Competitors must have begun 3rd lap by 10am, reaching the southern turnaround by 10:30, as the turnaround will not be
available once road closure ends at 11am. Any competitor on their north bound return to the venue after 11am will be
escorted back to the venue by motorcycle marshals who will ensure their safety, whilst adhering to regular road rules, eg.
Stopping at red lights, etc.

RACE RULES – BIKE

    1. No drafting is permitted. The cycle draft zone is a 12 metre long by three metre wide rectangle between the
front wheel edge of the lead cycle and the front edge of the following cycle, extending each side of the cycle
by 1.5 metre, measured from the leading edge of the front wheel. Another athlete has 20 seconds to pass
through that zone. Likewise, once an athlete is passed they have 20 seconds to drop back out of the draft
        zone.
    2. Vehicle draft zone (including motorbikes) will be a rectangle thirty-five (35) metres long by five (5) meters
wide, which surrounds every vehicle on the cycle segment. The front edge of the vehicle will define the
centre of the leading 5 metre edge of the rectangle.
    4. The following helmet standards are required: ASTM - F1447-1994, Australia and NZ Standards - S/NZS
        2063:1996 or NZS 5439 or AS2063.2, Snell-B90 or B95, CE European Standards-EN1078, US Consumer
        Products Safety Standards - USCPS.
    5. Helmets must be secured by the chin strap before unracking the bike, and must remain fastened until the
        cyclist has re-racked the bike.
    6. No individual support allowed. No competitor may seek or receive outside help from spectators, members of
the public or any third party.
    7. Each participant is responsible for the state or repair of his/her own bike. Assistance by anyone other than
official technical support personnel will be grounds for immediate disqualification. This disallows the use of
spare wheels and back-up bikes and requires that each competitor be prepared to handle any possible
mechanical malfunction. Participant may run/walk their bike if necessary.
    8. Cyclists are expected to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
    9. Competitors must keep as far to the left as is practically possible at all times, pass others on the right and
must obey all directions of Event officials and the Police. There will be full road closures in place until
11:00am. Crossing the centre line is prohibited and will result in disqualification.
    10. The penalty for drafting, dangerous riding or unsportsmanlike conduct will result in the issuing of a Yellow
Card. The athlete will be required to report to the penalty box on the completion of that lap for a 5min penalty .
A second Yellow Card will result in a further five minute penalty. A third penalty will result in a Red Card and
        immediate disqualification.
    11. The race director has the right to change the location of the bike course or the distance of the bike course (at
their absolute discretion) and taking into account the weather and course conditions.
    12. The bike course will close at 11:00am and anyone not meeting cut-off time can continue but must follow traffic
rules and be off the road by 11:15am.

TIMING

Any athlete who drops out of the race MUST notify the finish line officials and return your timing chip. This is
absolutely essential as it is vital we know where you are on the course at all times for your own safety.

The timing band is to be worn throughout the entire race and can be attached using the velcro band above the left
ankle. In case of loss of the timing band during the race, time-taking is not possible anymore which leads to the
participant’s disqualification. The timing band is borrowed property and must be returned at the end of the race.
Failure to do so will result in a $50 fine for its replacement.

Official times will be listed on the Challenge Melbourne website following the completion of the event
