Meets Jan. 25
The Benbrook Quilt Club meets the last Saturday of each month from 1
to 4 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church of Benbrook located
at 1015 McKinley Street. This month's meeting is on Jan. 25.
The members of this group are Tarrant County Chapter Project Linus
blanketeers creating handmade quilts and blankets that provide love,
warmth, and comfort for local children who have suffered trauma, tragedy,
or illness. Sadly, the need for these blankets increases each month. They des-

quilts.
Regardless of your experience, there is a place for you. High school stu-
dents can receive community service credits for participating. Donations of
material or money to purchase material are greatly appreciated. Sewing Motel 6

mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus
blooms in sublime southwestern sun, and the diversity of species is the best
in the country. This magical place is Big Bend, Texas.” These are the words
you will read in the first paragraph on the website for Big Bend National
Park. I don’t know who exactly the writer is, but they have done a good job
of describing this phenomenal National Park. The park turned 75 years old
in 2019, and is frequently called, “Texas’ gift to the nation.” Big Bend
National Park, along with the Guadalupe Mountains National Park are the
only two national parks in Texas, are both are well worth visiting.
Over the last few days of 2019 and into the first few days of 2020, I made
my second trip as an adult to Big Bend. By going to one of the hottest places
in Texas during the cooler winter months, our group was able to complete
several desert hikes without having to worry about heatstroke and without
having to carry large amounts of water. We also were able to wander about One of several hawks we saw in the deserts of Big Bend.
on many of the rarely traveled backcountry roads and explore hidden histor-
ical sites within the park.
New Year’s Eve was spent with our group circled around a lantern, eat-
ing supper, laughing and slightly shivering. We would love to have made a
roaring fire to combat the cool desert air, but Big Bend doesn’t allow ground
fires. On this particular night we were camping about 200 yards from the
Rio Grande River and we could hear the river’s gentle moving water as it
headed toward Mariscal Canyon. Big Bend doesn’t allow any fireworks, but
after we turned the lantern off, we were treated to a sky full of amazing stars
that rivaled any fireworks show I have ever seen. Big Bend is a Dark Sky
Sanctuary, which means it is far enough away from man-made light to boast
exceptional starry skies. Photographers flock to Dark Sky Sanctuaries to
take stellar pictures of the sky, stars, the Milky Way, the moon, and any spec-
tacular astronomical objects. Two of our group are photographers, and they
did get some great pictures during several evenings. A male black bear in Big Bend was not scared of us at all, as we took pho-

year, but as it rose it quickly warmed up the low desert land. We celebrated
this first day of 2020 with a six mile hike up to Mariscal Canyon and enjoyed
views for miles across Big Bend and across the Rio Grande into Mexico.
After our hike we continued our back-country drive up to the old Mariscal
Mine, and of course more photographs.
The solitude and amazing quiet of Big Bend was not the usual way peo-
ple celebrate the new year, but I will say it was one of my most memorable
new years. The beauty of God’s creation was on full display each day and
each evening, and it simply made us all thankful for a magical new year of
life and opportunities.
        See you next week!
