2 The Coolest Corner of North CarolinaWelcome! Welcome to Ashe County, the coolest corner of North Carolina! Whether a longtime local, a new resident of Ashe, or an explorer looking to make the most of a visit to the area, this guide is the perfect tool to gather information and ideas! Ashe County’s location in the northwestern corner of North Carolina and its average elevation of 3,000 feet justify the name “the coolest corner of North Carolina,” but there is so much more that contributes to this: our breathtaking scenery, our vibrant music and arts community, our special and diverse small towns, and our genuine, hardworking people. We’re so proud to share with you this glimpse of what makes Ashe County such a wonderful place to visit and live. W hile atop Mt. Jefferson during a visit to Ashe County
in 1828, Dr. Elisha Mitchell exclaimed, “Oh, what an ocean
of mountains!”, and this description is just as fitting today.
The towering mountains, rolling hills, and capillary-like
tributaries of the New River offer countless vistas and
serve as a playground for kids of all ages.
Parks,
Ashe County has many spaces where you can enjoy
the outdoors. Visit New River State Park, designated
North Carolina trout waters in Todd or Lansing, or other
public New River access points to make memories on the
second oldest river in the world. Climb to new peaks and
experience thrilling views from Mt. Jefferson State Natural
Area, Pond Mountain, or along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
These sights are beautiful year-round, but we recommend
taking time in autumn to enjoy the golden and scarlet tones
as the fall foliage sets our vistas ablaze.
Our natural wonderland and adventurous business
owners offer numerous options for outdoor events and
recreation. Now in its 31st year, the Blue Ridge Brutal
affords cyclists three challenging routes, all including at
least 20 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as an
elective ascent of Mount Jefferson. Promising thrills and perhaps a few spills, the sixth annual
NC Downhill Race at Mount Jefferson was recently named one of six global World Cup events by
the International Downhill Federation. For a more relaxing outing, you can fish, canoe, kayak,
or float in an inner tube down the New River, and there are many miles of routes to bike or hike.

Mountain offers fun and a challenge for all
skill levels, or play a round of traditional
golf with unique views at Jefferson Landing

and horseback riding are also among Ashe
County’s memorable outdoor offerings.
With so many incredible natural resources
and opportunities for outdoor activities,
it is critical that these gifts are maintained
and secured for future generations. Blue
Ridge Conservancy has protected over
21,000 acres in Ashe and nearby counties,
including a 2,900 acre State Game Land
preserve on Pond Mountain. For 40 years,
New River Conservancy has sought to
protect the waters and wildlife of the New
River by fostering research and education
and inspiring community advocates. We’d
love for you to join us in experiencing and

From its 5,000 foot elevation, Pond Mountain overlooks Virginia’s Mount
Rogers, Grayson Highlands State Park, and Jefferson National Forest, as
well as Tennessee’s Cherokee National Forest. Thomas Jefferson’s father,
Peter, named this peak in the 1700s for the many natural water sources
that originate there before flowing into the New River.

2020 Small Business
of the Year
The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to
announce that Mountain Aire Golf Club has been selected
as the 2020 Small Business of the Year! This award, given
to a Chamber member business in operation for at least
three years with a staff of fewer than 25 employees and a
strong commitment to the community, is well-deserved due
to Mountain Aire’s long history of supporting numerous
charitable causes and enriching life in Ashe County.
As said by a proponent of this selection, “You don’t have
to be a golfer to know how much this nominee has impacted
our community.” Now a third generation family business,
Mountain Aire Golf Club has been serving residents of and
visitors to Ashe County with a high quality public golf course
since 1950. Opened by Carl and Pearl Hagel, then owned by
Mark and Lu Hagel, Mountain Aire has continued to operate
with passion for the family’s legacy of charitable and community
involvement. Frequent hosts and supporters of non-profit
fundraisers, they have had a tremendous impact on many local
organizations over five decades. They encourage education,
holding many free golf clinics for men, women, and children.
Mountain Aire ardentlychampions youth, offering free course
use and supplies for middle and high school golf teams. Their
dedication to kids is further exemplified in their building of an
abbreviated course with free golf for juniors. Whether offering
monetary donations, volunteering their time for others, or
supporting local initiatives, the team at Mountain Aire serves
as a staunchly benevolent community partner, and the Ashe
County Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Owners
Philip and Laura Shepherd and their staff with this award!
