PRESIDER KEY* S=Chris santangelo R=John Roche D=Rich Danyluk
WM=Bill Moore CP=Comboni Priest Z=Paul Zaccone C=Peadar CroninFatherhood With Integrity I was rummaging around the internet for inspiration about fatherhood on this Father’s Day weekend. I found a site by Gene Whitehead with a title that caught my eye, Simple Theology, Messy Life. From his Christian tradition he offers reflections on a number of topics, one of which he called 11 Bible Verses to Encourage Faithful Dads. One of those scriptures is Proverbs 20:7 – He who walks in his integrity is righteous; happy are his children who follow him. Our Catholic faith supports us at all times. Each of us is blessed with God’s Spirit and through that Spirit we have the power to act in some extraordinary ways. We have very high ideals to live toward – and we are blessed with a God who does not expect perfection from any of us. God loves us no matter what. While we are a church with a very developed theology to inform our lives, we have a Lord who meets us in the messiness of our lives. Our parent or parents were not given guidebooks on how to raise us. In my heart of hearts I believe that our par- ents did the best they could with the gifts, talents and liabilities they each had. They learned what they could from their parent or parents – and they brought the good, the bad, and the ugly into their own family life. Addiction, abandonment, abuse, immaturity, infidelity – these are just a few of the issues that have powerful ef- fects on all people in a household. As I learned from my own family life (and personal counseling sessions), our parents did not have all the tools to help us become fully formed and mature to negotiate all of the complexities of life. Our parents were broken at times – but they weren’t powerless to give of their goodness to us. That scripture quote from Proverbs 20:7 rings very true about our fathers (and our mothers): He who walks in his integrity is righteous; happy are his children who follow him. No father needs to have all of his skills honed perfectly in order to raise his children well. The father who strives to live with integrity toward his children (guiding them in love; instructing them from his experiences; apologizing when he has wronged them; encouraging them to know they are loved no matter what mistakes they make; allowing them to grow to become the unique individuals they can be; etc.). These are acts of love and integrity that will give their children amazing tools for claiming their own adult- hood. Fatherhood is a blessed and messy role in life in our mod- ern world. Our single fathers, divorced fathers, married fathers, gay and straight fathers – each can walk with in- tegrity and raise amazing children. And they don’t need to be perfect to do so. Happy Father’s Day – fathers of all types (and mothers who have taken on the role of fatherhood). Thank you for loving your children when they accepted your love and when they didn’t. With God’s help you will continue to strive to live your own integrity and share that wonderful gift with your children. Peace, 4 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Proverbios 20: 7 - El que camina en su integridad es justo;
Paz,
