ST E G O S A UR U S
A Stegosaurus moves slowly,
eating plants at its feet. Meanwhile,
a meat-eating Allosaurus watches. It
wants to make Stegosaurus its dinner.
Without warning, Allosaurus runs
at Stegosaurus with razor-sharp claws.
Stegosaurus can’t run away. The
predator doesn’t count on the plant
eater fighting back, though.
4 5Fighting Back
Stegosaurus lowers itself to protect
its belly. Allosaurus’ teeth are about sink
into its leg. But Stegosaurus swings its
spiked tail. A spike spears Allosaurus’
eye. Roaring, the meat eater stumbles
away. Its eye is hot with pain. It doesn’t
want food now!
6 7A Big Dinosaur
Stegosaurus would’ve made a good
meal. It was big! It was up to 30 feet
(9 meters) long. That’s about half the
length of a bowling lane. It wasn’t easy
for predators to get Stegosaurus’ guts,
though. Tail spikes kept it safe. So did
large, bony plates. These staggered
plates stood up along its back. Some
plates were 2½ feet (1 m) tall.
