Guidelines and Regulations
Acceptable Use Policy
In order to borrow a school Chromebook, all students and parents must read the terms and
conditions for the Clark County School District’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Access to the
Clark County School District’s educational network resources is designed for educational
purposes and the District has taken precautions to restrict access to controversial material.
Students must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy and the CCSD Regulation. Violating the
Acceptable Use Policy may result in loss of a Chromebook and/or other District disciplinary
measures. This form must be completed and signed.

Cell Phone Policy
All cell phones are prohibited during class unless authorized by the teacher. Any use of a
cell phone or any electronic device is permitted BEFORE SCHOOL, AFTER SCHOOL, and
DURING LUNCH.
Cell phones are NOT permitted to be used in the hallways or restrooms during instructional
hours. Use of cell phones during high-stakes testing is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
Cell phones may be subjected to confiscation at any time deemed necessary by an
administrator, teacher, or any school staff member. The following progressive discipline
will be followed when a cell phone is confiscated:
   1. Teacher Warning
   2. Teacher Confiscates and Returns to Student at end of Class
   3. Parent/Guardian Pick up
   4. Further progressive discipline as per CCSD Regulations.
Keller Middle School is NOT responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen cell phones. Cell
phone security is SOLE RESPONSIBILITY of students.
Per CCSD Policy 5136: The use by students of personal technology and communication devices such as cell
phones, laptops, tablet computers, or other similar electronic devices is permitted during school nutrition breaks,
lunch periods, and school-sponsored activities at all District school campuses and while on District Buses. During
the instructional day, students may only use devices with the discretion of the principal and abide by school site
rules. Use that violates state or federal law. Any District policies or regulations, or the CCSD Acceptable Use Policy
is prohibited.

After School Assistance
Students are allowed to stay after school for extra help with teachers, for club activities, to
serve detention, or for other school-related activities; however, the only students permitted
to ride the late bus will be those assigned to a regular bus route and who have a late bus pass.
All other students must arrange for their own transportation home prior to the day they
participate in an after-school activity.
Arrival Time
School campus will be open at 7:40 a.m. All students need to ensure they are seated in their
scheduled class by 8:00 a.m.

Attendance
Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class period per day. A student who is more than
thirty minutes late to class shall be marked absent for that class period only. However, a
parent can submit an absent note through email to burrila@nv.ccsd.net or a handwritten
note can be turned in to the front office.

Attendance-Excused Absences
Student absences will be considered excused if the absence is for student illness, medical or
legal appointments, or family emergencies such as a death in the family. Regular attendance
is crucial for student success. Students are allowed three (3) days after an absence to provide
a written excuse.
Prearranged absences must be requested in writing by the parent/guardian prior to the
absence. Prearranged absences are considered excused but may only consist of ten missed
days for the entire school year. For a Pre-Arranged absence note, please come in to the front
office. Homework for prearranged absences should be requested three (3) days in advance.
If a student is placed on Required Parent Conference, the parent has three (3) days to make
an appointment. After three days, every day after becomes unexcused.

There are two options to submit Attendance Notes:
   1. Email to: burrila@nv.ccsd.net
The email used to submit MUST match the Parent/ Guardian information in Infinite Campus
        Notes must include:
           ● Student First and Last Name
           ● Grade/Student Number
           ● Reason for student being absent
           ● Parent First and Last Name
           ● Parents phone number
   2. Submit a handwritten absence note to the front office

Attendance-Unexcused Absences
Student absences will be considered unexcused for any reason other than illness, medical or
legal appointments, family emergencies or more than ten (10) pre-arranged absences. Any
student having more than ten (10) unexcused absences in a semester will receive a failing
grade for that semester. The student may also be recommended for retention in that grade.
Parents will receive a registered letter which will include procedures for an appeal. Nevada
State Law allows you to prearrange absences for your child. CCSD Regulation 5113 classifies
up to 10 prearranged absences during a school year as excused. Homework for prearranged
absences should be requested three (3) days in advance.
Attendance-Tardies
A student who is less than thirty minutes late to class shall be marked tardy for that class
period only. The policy is a “per tardy” basis. All tardies for each class will be documented in
Infinite Campus and then will be followed up with an MBI by each individual teacher. Tardies
will reset on the first day of the second semester.
Students must be in their classroom or the locker room when the bell rings to not be
considered tardy. Every block except 1st block of the day will have a tardy lockout that leads
to progressive discipline:
   1. Tardies 1-3: Lunch detention
   2. Tardies 4-6: After school detention
   3. Tardies 7-9: In-House suspension
   4. Tardies 10+: Further progressive discipline as per CCSD Regulations.

Change of Contact Information
Please notify the registrar, (702) 799-3220 ext. 4065, of any change of address, phone

Clean Campus
All students are expected to cooperate in keeping our school clean by putting all trash in the
waste receptacles provided. Students are expected to clean their tables after eating in the
cafeteria. Students who are caught defacing or writing graffiti on any school building or
property will be subject to disciplinary action and must provide compensation for damage.

Dances and Events
The student government and other student groups may sponsor dances, activities, and
other events during the year to raise funds, encourage school spirit and celebrate
appropriate occasions. Participation in such events is a privilege that may be suspended
for disciplinary reasons.

Delivery of Gifts and Bouquets
Keller Middle School cannot take the responsibility for the delivery of bouquets or other gifts
to students. If items are delivered at school, they will remain in the front office until the end
of the school day. Please arrange for these items to be delivered to the home.
Dress Code
Students’ dress, personal appearance, and conduct are required to be of such character as not
to disrupt or detract from the educational environment of the school. Students who do not
follow the Dress Code will be subject to Progressive Discipline as per CCSD Regulations. The

disrupts the educational setting, is prohibited. This includes clothing with alcohol and/or tobacco
        advertisements.
    ● Torn, cut-offs, frayed and/or clothing with holes that expose undergarments and/or is located
        above the fingertips is prohibited.
    ● Pajamas, blankets and slippers are not permitted.

        obscene are prohibited.
    ● Sunglasses are prohibited within the building.
    ● Chains attached to wallets are prohibited.
    ● Studded or spiked clothing/jewelry is prohibited.

Safety Drills
Fire, shelter-in-place, and lockdown drills are conducted routinely. Fire drill route maps are
posted in each room. Consult these maps when entering classes. Students who do not
immediately return to class after a fire drill will be subject to discipline as per CCSD
Regulations. Initiating a false fire alarm is a misdemeanor, punishable by law. Anyone found
guilty of such an act will be subject to progressive discipline as per CCSD Regulations and
referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Gum, Candy, and Food
Students are not allowed to have gum, candy, food or drinks, (bottled water is allowed) in the
classrooms, hallways, or quad. Gum is not allowed anywhere on campus. Please assist us in
maintaining a clean campus. Please DO NOT have food, cake, etc., delivered to your student
at school.
Library
Students need to know their student ID number to check out library books. Library books
circulate for a three (3) week period and may be renewed two (2) times. Please visit the
Keller library website: Kellerms.org for information about, library hours and policies, and to
access databases and eBooks.

Food Services
All students are eligible for a no cost breakfast and lunch. Please contact our Cafeteria
Manager at 702-799-3220 ext. 4012 for any questions or concerns.

Lunch Procedures in the Cafeteria
Keller Middle School provides a cafeteria where students may eat during the day. Students
should enter the cafeteria safely, with no running, and sit down at a table before being
called to join a line for their lunch choice. Before students leave their area, they are asked to
leave the tables clean and conduct themselves in an orderly manner. Students who are
misbehaving, throwing food, or cutting in line may receive disciplinary consequences.

Grading Policy
Throughout the semester, students will be expected to complete formative and summative
assessments. Assessments include, but are not limited to homework, class activities,
participation, lab activities, class projects, quizzes, and exams. Grades will be weighted as
follows:
                        o Summative- 80%

50%.

Citizenship Policy
Citizenship involves being prepared to learn and respecting your right and others’ right to
learn. Your citizenship grade will be lowered due to tardiness to class, coming to class
unprepared, missing or late assignments, and disciplinary infractions. Click for the Citizenship
Rubric.
Make Up Work
Teachers shall provide opportunities for students to make up missed work due to any absence,
and students shall be held accountable for the work. When students are absent, however,
the educational experiences lost during that absence might be irretrievable because the
instruction and interaction in the instructional setting cannot be duplicated through make-up
work. It is the student’s responsibility to email and communicate with the teacher. Parents
may request make-up work by calling 799-3220, ext. 4202. Please allow at minimum twenty-
four hours to collect the make-up work.

Nuisance Items
Any items that cause a distraction in the classroom are not permitted. Items such as
Gameboys, PSPs, cameras, laser pointers, stuffed animals, toys, water guns, dice, and other
such items are classified as nuisance items. If this occurs parents will be notified and
progressive discipline as per CCSD regulation will be followed.

Progress Reports
Progress reports will be available online in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal at the midpoint
of each quarter to indicate students’ academic progress and citizenship. This is done to keep
parents informed of their child’s progress and to give students the opportunity to correct any
errors prior to teachers issuing the students’ grades.

Promotion Regulations
CCSD Policy and Regulation 5123 sets the standard for promotion of students in middle school.
Sixth-grade students must complete one semester with a passing grade in Math, English or
Reading, and Science to qualify for promotion to seventh grade. Seventh-grade students must
complete one semester with a passing grade in Math, English or Reading, Science, and Social
Studies for promotion to eighth grade. Eighth-grade students must have three semesters of a
passing grade in Math, Reading or English, Science, and Social Studies during their seventh and
eighth-grade years for promotion to high school.

Release of Students and Passports
Students will only be released to an adult, 18 years or older, who are listed on the student’s
Infinite Campus; for an early dismissal. Proper photo identification will be required and
students cannot be released after 2:00 pm. When a student is placed on RPC (Required Parent
Conference) or Suspension during the school day, he or she will be allowed to walk home with
parent permission and a white passport slip will be provided.

Schedule Changes
Changes in a student’s schedule will only be made in cases of placement in classes that are
inappropriate to the student’s ability or to meet school district curriculum requirements. A
parent/teacher conference must have been held to discuss the reason for the schedule
change. All schedule changes must be approved by the administration.
Student Identification Cards
Students must always wear his/her student ID card. The first ID card is provided free to each
student. Replacement cards are $5.00 and may be purchased in the banking office before
school and during lunches, excluding days of special events or sporting events. ID cards will be
provided to each student on picture day.

Student Supplies
The students will be informed by their classroom teacher on school supplies needed for the
academic year. If you need assistance with supplies, please contact our counseling offices.

Transportation
School bus transportation is a privilege, not a right. Students are expected to follow all school
and bus rules while on the bus and at their bus stops. Bus citations will be dealt with severely
in the Student Success Center. Multiple citations will result in progressive discipline as per
CCSD Regulations. The administration may also impose additional consequences for bus
citations. Students are not permitted at any time to ride on a bus for which they are not
assigned. Transportation for after school activities will be provided to only those students
who are assigned to a regular bus route.

If your residence is at least two miles from school, you may qualify for bus transportation.
You may call the CCSD Transportation Office 702-799-8100 to register your child for
transportation or register online at http://www.ccsd.net/transportation.

information on the school. Different pages have been created to inform students and
communicate with families. Parents and students may also access the Infinite Campus Parent
Portal System. The Infinite Campus Parent Portal System provides a direct link to student
information such as attendance, grades, course history, records, classes, and transcripts. For
details go to: www.kellerms.org

can be forwarded. If you have any questions regarding this procedure, please call 799-3220,
ext. 4065.
Behavior Expectations
Student Success Coordinator
The Student Success Coordinator is directly responsible for behavior issues that classroom
teachers have deemed extraordinary or issues that occur outside of the classroom. The
Student Success Coordinator will enforce CCSD and school expectations and act as a resource
for the staff at Keller. If at any time you need to make an appointment, please call Student
Success Center 702 799-3220, ext. 4500.

Student Success Center
The Student Success Center assists students, parents/guardians, and school staff in resolving
concerns associated with student attendance, behaviors, and school performance. The office
number is 702-799-3220, ext. 4500.

Incident Reports
All students can report any incident in the Student Success Center.

Code of Conduct
The CCSD Code of Conduct is found on the school website on the CCSD website ccsd.net
under the Parents tab. The purpose of this document is to familiarize stakeholders with
specific behavior incidents and the potential consequences for student behavior violations.
Additionally, all employees of the Clark County School District will utilize the K-12 Student
Code of Conduct while determining disciplinary outcomes for students.

Lost and Found
The staff of Keller Middle School makes every effort to help students safeguard their valuables,
however, the primary responsibility for this lies with the student. It is recommended that
name labels be placed on personal articles and wearing apparel. All lost articles will be placed
in the lost and found in the Student Success Center. Unclaimed items will be donated to a local
charity. It is strongly suggested that expensive items and large sums of money not be brought
to school. Keller Middle School will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
Keller CARE Expectations

Bullying/Cyberbullying/Harassment
Students at Keller Middle School are expected to treat each other with kindness. Any bullying
or harassment, whether in person, online, through messaging or social media will not be
tolerated and students will be subject to discipline.
    ➢ Say No to Bullying
We are committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment. Visit the
       www.kellerms.org, ccsd.net, or Safe Voice http://safevoicenv.org/ to report a
       bullying situation.

Hands-Off Policy
To ensure the safety of all students, please be reminded that Keller enforces the Hands-Off
policy. The Hands-Off policy refers to but is not limited to touching, pushing, flicking, kicking,
grabbing (including backpacks), shoving, play fighting, kissing, deliberately stepping on others,
or tripping. Violations of this policy will result in a discipline referral.
Social Media/Texting
Students utilizing social media or texting to harass other students or cause campus
disturbances will be subject to discipline. Posting pictures or videos of other students online
without their permission is prohibited. Students taking and/or posting video of fights will be
subject to discipline.

Harassment
Harassment may be any verbal, visual, or physical conduct or written evidence, which is
sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it adversely affects, or has the purpose or
logical consequence of interfering with the student’s educational program or creates an
intimidating, hostile, or offensive school atmosphere. Harassment, whether it is by students,
staff, or third parties in the school community, is strictly prohibited and will subject the
perpetrator to disciplinary action. Harassment, regardless of its basis, is prohibited.

Fighting
Fighting is a tremendous disruption to the educational setting that affects not only the
students directly involved in the fight, but the remainder of the student body as it creates an
atmosphere of tension. Physical blows between students will result in the students being
placed on a Required Parent Conference. Based on the severity of the situation and prior
history, students will possibly receive further progressive discipline. Students who engage in
repeated fighting will be referred for placement in an Academic Center. Students who engage
in behaviors that create the potential for physical confrontations shall be placed on a Notice
of Required Parent Conference.

Loitering
Students should not be on campus prior to 7:40 a.m. and must leave campus immediately
after school unless staying for tutoring, activity, sports, or after-school events. Students will
not be allowed to loiter in the hallways, quad, cafeteria, library, or parking lot. Additionally,
students are not allowed to loiter on private property near the school.

Truancy
Truancy is defined by Nevada Revised Statute as an absence for all or any part of the school
day without the permission of the school administration. Truancies are a severe violation of
the school’s rules and state laws. Students found to be truant are required by law to have a
parent conference with the school administration. Repeated truancies are subject to a court
citation to a juvenile court for violation of state law. The juvenile court consequence may
include a fine of up to $200.00, community service, and the suspension of the student’s driver
license when they are sixteen years of age or older.
Behavior Referrals
Students will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action when the student has
reached four Minor Behavior Incidents (MBI) for the same behavior with the same teacher.
Each student who receives an MBI will have the opportunity to correct their behavior, if not
the teacher will follow levels to resolve the problem, such as calling home, emailing the
parent, verbal redirection, proximity control, reteach expectation, and verbal warnings. If the
behavior is not corrected, a Behavior Referral will be completed by the teacher and be
submitted. All Behavior Referrals are handled through disciplinary action through the Student
Success Center.

Major Incidents include assault, battery, fighting, threat, theft, possession or use of alcohol or
a controlled substance, immoral conduct, abusive language including profanity and racial
slurs, gang-related behaviors, possession or use of tobacco products. This will be an automatic
Behavior Referral and will be handled through the Student Success Center with disciplinary
action.

Detention
According to Nevada Revised Statutes, students may be kept for up to sixty (60) minutes
before or after school at the discretion of the teacher or administration. Detention may be
assigned for working on assignments or as a disciplinary consequence for student behavior.
Clark County School District regulation requires twenty-four (24) hour notification of an
assigned detention. Failure to show for an assigned detention may result in further disciplinary
action.

Required Parent Conference
When a student’s actions are such that a conference must be held with the administration
prior to the student returning to the school setting, the student may be placed on Required
Parent Conference (RPC) status. The focus of the conference will be to review the school rules,
consequences for continued violations, and methods of successfully complying with school
rules. Both parent and student must be present at this conference. A Required Parent
Conference is not intended to be punitive. It is intended to afford the parent/guardian, the
student, and the administration the opportunity to establish a “plan of action” to help the
student succeed or to investigate a situation.

In-House Suspension
In-House Suspension (IHS) is a consequence for infractions and is a part of the progressive
discipline plan. Students can be placed in In-House for 1 period, 1 day, or multiple days
depending on the level of the infraction.
Expulsion
Expulsion means the termination of enrollment. These offenses include:

● Battery on Staff (Physical abuse directed at any school staff)
● Battery to a Student (Bodily threat or use of force)
● Repeated use, possession, and distribution of drugs or alcoholic beverages (Use,
possession, and/or distribution of a controlled and/or illicit substance or any substance
  represented to be such)
● Weapons (possession or use of any implement manufactured, used, or intended for use
as a weapon while at school or on the way to or from school as defined as firearms, knives,
explosives, illegal fireworks, flammable materials, or any other items that may cause bodily
  injury or death)

                                       Conclusion
