Product overview

The Duster 3000 Downdraft mobile air recycling vacuum device (with a limited field of operation) is the
ultimate, original, light, economic, efficient and cost-effective workshop device. It has been developed
to enhance the safety of bodywork and painting operations.
The Duster 3000 Downdraft generates throughput of over 3,000 CFM (85,000 l/min) with a 11/3 HP
explosion-proof motor and protected cabling. Operating voltage 220 V alternating current, current
consumption 6.5 A. The space requirements are only 32“ x 30“(81 x 76 cm). It is sufficiently powerful
to recycle air over a floor area of up to 460 square meters and therefore provides the mechanics with
clean air within their work area. With noise emissions of only 67 dB the device is extremely quiet.
The mobile air recycling vacuum device is delivered in pre-assembled form and it is fitted with standard
filters for the first year of operation so it is ready for immediate use. Activated carbon filters ranging
from 1.4 kg to 3.2 kg in weight are included for the painting of limited areas and these absorb VOCs,
toxic vapors and unpleasant odors. The standard intake filters can be cleaned and are designed to
have an operating life of up to 6 months. The intake filters trap particulate matter of 5
microns or more in size, including isocyanates which are released during sanding or painting of door
pillars/sills, recesses or other parts. The Viledon pocket filter absorbs particles of 3 microns or more
in size which are invisible to the naked eye, and it lasts for up to a year.
For safety reasons the device is fitted with an explosion-proof motor and a thermal circuit breaker to
prevent overheating. There is a digital LED airflow display on the front panel of the device which shows
the rate of air flow in CFM (cubic feet per minute) and also indicates when the intake filters need
cleaning. This airflow monitoring device is pre-set by the manufacturer, and it incorporates a yellow
warning light which flashes if the device is not operating within its operational tolerances and the filters
require urgent checking or cleaning.

The Duster 3000 Downdraft is patented (US patent no. 5312465). It is manufactured in Canada and is
certified according to CSA standards (UL-certified). The device can also be electrically set up according
to CE and other electrical technical standards.

INTENDED USE OF THE DUSTER 3000
The Duster 3000 Downdraft device is intended for the following uses in vehicle repair workshops:

1. Keeps the air which the mechanic is breathing in free of harmful dust during sanding of paints and
fillers. The fabric surface is installed above the working area so that the downwards airflow sucks the
dust away from the mechanic and towards the filters at the base of the device.

2. This simultaneously prevents the dust being directed towards other people, and the workshop and
spray booth filters are kept clean. The use of the optional activated carbon filters enables the organic
particles (VOCs), as well as the toxic vapors and unpleasant odors which are present in workshops
during the painting of door sills/pillars and recesses and other vehicle body parts, to be greatly reduced.
The effectiveness of the device in trapping harmful particles is 93-94% up to a particle size of 3
microns, and 27% up to a particle size of 1 micron. (This is an integral part of the fire protection and
safety test report.)

3. If the device is continuously operated in the workshop it keeps the air in the work area largely dust-free
all day long. All-day operation of this device is not only economic, due to the recycling and cleaning
of the air in the workshop it also ensures that harmful elements are no longer emitted into the external
environment.

4. It is also convenient to use in cases where painting works are to be carried out on a vehicle which is
being kept in a special device for repair and consequently cannot be brought into the spray booth. This
avoids the paint spray spreading throughout the entire workshop. NFPA rule 33, section 14.3.2 applies
to the painting of such surfaces (according to the volume of paint).

5. Dust/paint spray filter elements with a pleated structure trap all combustible particles of 5 microns
or more in size when they enter the interior of the device where the motor is located. This eliminates
any fire hazard.

* This device has undergone fire safety and general safety testing. It has an explosion-proof motor with
thermal protection and protected electrical cabling. In addition, it is fitted with a thermal circuit breaker
which switches it off in the event of it overheating.

It is not intended to be used as a substitute for a spray booth. The devices’ air filtration system is CSA-
certified, and they have been undergone rigorous explosion and fire hazard testing.

Thanks to these characteristics the Duster 3000 Downdraft is used throughout the world. It has been in
use for 12 years in North America as well as in other countries, such as England, France and Japan. It
has been licensed in the areas of the USA where the most stringent environmental requirements apply,
such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is also used by the U.S. Air Force and at General Motors
and the US postal service‘s maintenance facilities as well as at numerous vocational colleges for auto
body mechanics in North America.

*Fire protection test report and other tests for the NFPA submitted on 18th October 2000.

Cleaning of the filters:
If you maintain the filters well, the Duster 3000 Downdraft will reward you with years‘ of reliable operation
in your workshop. Use only OEM-specified filters.

Voltage fluctuations:
Fluctuations in mains voltage may lead to the electric motor not starting up properly. Make sure that your
power distribution system is not overloaded. The digital airflow monitoring system can also be adversely
affected by fluctuations in mains voltage. Do not use any extensions for the mains cable, as doing so
may lead to losses of current.

Disruption caused by external air flows:
Open doors and windows can cause drafts which impede the downward flow of air produced by the
device. If this does occur, we recommend screening off the work area with curtains which extend from
the ceiling to the floor so that the Duster 3000 Downdraft can operate with maximum efficiency.

Sanding tips:
If you are sanding polyester filler, place the intake duct directly above the work area; the end of the duct
should be partly behind the mechanic so that the dust which is produced is blown downwards into the
intake filters.

Painting tips:
The intake duct must not be placed above the vehicle since its airflow impedes the spray gun‘s airflow.
In the case of a car hood/bonnet, the intake duct should, for instance, be on the opposite side. In the
case of the sides of the vehicle, it is best to position the intake duct parallel to the vehicle at a distance
of about 30 cm from it.

Cleaning of the intake duct:
Once a year you should blow the topside of the intake duct clear, in particular the black exhaust air
diffuser located at the duct elbow: see page 9, section 18. Cleaning of the Lexan sheathe: see page 9,
section 2.

N.B. Never clean the Lexan sheathe with thinners. Use soapy water and a cloth.

                                                                                    www.mpsmicropaint.com

TROUBLE-SHOOTING
Unable to start device:

1. Make sure that the mains cable is connected to a 220 V power socket and is not damaged.

2. Fluctuations in mains voltage may lead to the electric motor not starting up properly.
Make sure that your power distribution system is not overloaded. A 15A circuit breaker is required.

3. Do not use any extensions for the mains cable, as doing so could lead to losses of current.

4. The electric motor is fitted with a thermal overload protection device, and it restarts automatically
   once it has cooled down.

Problems with the digital airflow display:

1. The digital airflow monitoring unit may likewise be adversely affected by fluctuations in mains
   voltage.

2. Consult the manufacturer or the dealer before resetting it.

Filter problems:

1. The most frequent filter problem is the clogging of the intake filters by particles of paint if the
green dust / paint spray filter elements are not installed.

2. If there is heavy paint spray or if clear paints are used, double green filter elements must be used
in order to trap the highly concentrated particles.

3. If the folds of the Viledon pocket filter are not vertically arranged this may
significantly restrict the airflow. See page 13, point 5.
