DMC in Northern Europe

The Kingdom of Norway is a genuine treasury of northern nature. Total area of Norway together
with the islands is 385,199 km².

The capital of Norway is Oslo – the country’s largest city with millenary history and abundant cultural
life. The history of other Norwegian cities is no less amazing, and life seethes in them.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
The official language of Norway is Norwegian.

CLIMATE
Thanks to Gulfstream and the North Atlantic Current, coastal areas have mild climate. In the inland
areas the climate is hotter in summer and colder in winter. Above the Arctic Circle, the polar day in
summer and the polar night in winter are observed. Temperatures in January are between +2°C and
-12°C, temperatures in July are between +6°C and +15°C.

CURRENCY
The national currency of Norway is Norwegian krone (NOK).

TRANSPORT
Norway has more than 50 regular airports. The largest air hubs are the airports of Oslo (Garder-
moen and Torp). Intercity buses and the entire system of ferries and sea lines between cities and
ports are also well-developed.

CUISINE
Norwegian menu includes plenty various dishes. A ranking place is assigned to fish and seafood:
roasted and smoked salmon “laks”, boiled shrimps “reker”, smoked dried cod “lutefisk”. Whale meat
and dishes made of it may seem a delicacy but have always been traditional for Norwegians. Dairy
products play an important role: spices are replaced with sour cream in many hot dishes, while
different sorts of crottin feature uncommon colouring (from yellow to dark-brown) and characteristic
smell.
Ringnes beer and purely Norwegian akevitt – alkie from potatoes with caraway matured in wooden
casks – are among the most popular alcoholic drinks in Norway.

old town (Gamlebyen) and bastion fortifications. The
old town is attractive because of its authentic atmo-

Bastion fortifications in the shape of a star remind of
the military history of the city and former battles. In
summertime, you can take a river cruise (15 min.)
from the Old Town to the New Town.
Exploring the city even further, we will move through
the islands of Hvaler archipelago scattered along the
coast of Fredrikstad. Here you can see skerries and

you to enjoy sea views (from May 1 to October 1).
At the end of the tour we will visit the town of Drøbak,
which is located in the narrowest part of Oslofjord.
The distance between the two sides is only 500
meters. The famous Christmas house and the office
of Julenissen (Norwegian Christmas gnome) are
located in Drøbak. The tour lasts for 5-6 hours.

COBALT MINES, OR
"IN THE SEARCH OF THE CAVE KING"
                                            (7 hours)
                                     (April 1 - November 1)

Since the 18th century, the mines to the north of Oslo provided up to 80 percent of the world’s production
of cobalt.
Today, the territory of the former royal cobalt mines is a unique complex that includes mines, old factory
buildings, a waterfall, a café with home cuisine, museums, souvenir shops, and a mini-farm for the young-
est guests.
During the tour we will visit the most beautiful mines of the 18th-19th centuries in Scandinavia. The length
of the route is 1.5 km, which includes climbs and descents on the stairs leading to the very heart of the
mines, large halls, and extensive galleries.
While visiting these mountainous places, you can be easily carried into action of the famous play “Peer
Gynt” by H. Ibsen. These caves are also mysterious like the melody of Edward Grieg's “In the Hall of the
Mountain King”. When on the tour, be vigilant: perhaps you might be the lucky one to meet the Mountain
King.
The descent into the mines accompanied by a local guide is available from May 24 to September
29.
Cheese matured by a famous local dairy in an old traditional way can be found here in the cobalt mines.
This cheese is supplied to the members of the Norwegian royal family. On this tour you get to see where
the cheese is stored. It can be purchased in all shops of the museum.
You can enjoy Norwegian cuisine in one of the cafes, take a walk to Haugfoss waterfall, visit the museum
of the artist Theodor Kittelsen. It is a great place to relax in nature for families with children.
There is a pet farm, green lawns at the river bank, places for picnic and games.
We will also visit the hometown of the Biathlon King – the famous Ole Einar Bjørndalen. A monument to
this well-known citizen is found here.

way to the most picturesque fjords of Norway starts here.

The history of the city founded over 900 years ago is rooted in the Viking Age. As one of the thresholds of
the Hanseatic League, Bergen was a flourishing centre of trade between Norway and other European
countries during several centuries. Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf - the key historical attraction of the city – is
found on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. Dozens of restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir
shops and several museums are located here.

We suggest taking a walk in Bergen with visits to
various city attractions: the fish market and the
Aquarium, ascent to the observation deck by funicular,
medieval churches Domkirken and Korskirken (the
oldest St. Mary's church closed in 2010 for restoration),
Bryggen wharf and narrow crooked streets of the old
town. These short trips from 2 hours can optionally be
supplemented with visits to various city museums.
3-4-hour sightseeing tours by car include a city tour
with 2-3 stops for photos and a visit the country
house museum of the famous composer Edvard
Grieg or the masterpiece of wooden architecture - the
                                            stave church in Fantoft.

A visit to Old Bergen Museum will give you an oppor-
tunity to get acquainted with the typical area of urban
architecture reflecting the lifestyle and tastes of
residents in the interval from the 18th to the late 19th
centuries. This is not just an open air museum park,
but a lively area of the city with streets, squares,
groceries, barber shops, houses of urban people of
                                            different classes.

All these tours can be combined according to your
                                            preferences, supplementing and replacing one
                                            component with another.

Trolltunga is one of the most spectacular scenic cliffs in Norway. Trolltunga is situated about 1100 meters
above sea level, hovering 700 metres above lake Ringedalsvatnet. The view is breathtaking. The hike
starts in Skjeggedal and goes through the high mountains, takes 10-12 hours (27,5 km in total to Trolltun-
ga and return) and the ascent is about 1000 meters. It is a long and demanding hike. The trail is marked
from the parking lot in Skjeggedal to Trolltunga. Along the trail there are signs showing the distance left
to Trolltunga.

CONSIDER CAREFULLY WHETHER YOU ARE IN GOOD ENOUGH SHAPE AND HAVE THE RIGHT
EQUIPMENT BEFORE SETTING OUT. There is partly mobile phone coverage (Telenor) along the route.
The hike is usually possible to do from mid-June, depending on when the snow melts in the mountains.
Normally one can hike to Trolltunga until mid-September. WARNING - DO NOT HIKE TO TROLLTUNGA
IN WINTERTIME.
All nature based activities are at your own risk. You will need sturdy hiking boots, bring extra warm cloth-
ing, rainwear and be prepared for bad weather. Bring map and compass, plenty to eat and drink, a torch
and a simple first aid kit. Weather in the high mountains can change quickly - check the latest weather
forecast before going to Trolltunga. Do NOT hike to Trolltunga in strong wind, heavy rain or in foggy
weather. It is always colder in the mountains than down by the fjord. Respect the nature.
Every year there are search and rescue operations for hikers in serious trouble. Prepare well and be a
responsible and safe hiker. Start early in the morning. Norway is far north, meaning daylight is short from
September and nights are very cold. We recommend starting at latest 8:00 in the morning.
