BOARD CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Welcome to 2022 – A new year, new beginnings and changes in the making.
As we get back into the swing of bowls and attacking a new year head on, I would like to thank everybody
for their efforts in dealing with the many facets of “The New Normal”. Covid is a fact of life now, we all need
to take responsibility for ourselves and our own wellbeing, as much as we need others to do so as well.
Thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our confirmed cases lower than what I have been hearing
from other Clubs.
Unfortunately, due to the high cost of business we have had to make the decision to increase the price of
beverages. I know, I know, stone him at the door and leave him on a spike as a lesson to any others with
such heinous ideas.
Sadly this is another flow on effect of COVID. Our suppliers have increased their costs and we have resist-
ed over the last two years to pass those costs on to members as we felt that members have had a hard
enough time over the past two years with COVID and we wanted to maintain a sense of normal. However,
we have to now act on those increases. The price increase will take effect from February 3rd .
The top green is coming along nicely, perhaps the only thing that enjoys these extreme heat conditions
that we have been facing in the past few weeks. Hopefully we can get a good growth period and Mark can
work his magic and we can have a playable surface very soon.
Thank you for to those who acknowledged my request for volunteers for our functions in February, greatly
appreciated.
Also a big thank you to Craig Bryant, who came in early on a Saturday before pennant and started clean-
ing the windows outside. Its moments like that, that encourages not just myself but the Board and the
Bowls Committee and hopefully other Members to do a small part for the Club and to give a small part
back to such an amazing Club. Really appreciated.
On the back of that we will be putting together a list of tasks that are required around the Club and posting
it to the various forms of correspondence, the idea is that if you see something that you think you could
help with, tick it off, write your name if you wish and we will leave it up to you.
                                                                                         Con’d on next Page

Thank you as always HBC, you guys are awesome and you make my job a pleasure to do.
Good bowling to all in your various tournaments and events,
stay safe, stay hydrated and continued success. Julian Morilly
                                                                 Board Chairman

A SAD MONTH FOR HEATHMONT BOWLS CLUB
John Vincent Callander
It is with great sadness that we advise the passing of Vin Callander. Vin died
suddenly at home early on the morning of the 30/1.Vin was greatly admired,
and liked by all members, and was a highly respected member the Heath-
mont Bowls Club over many years. He was awarded “Life Membership” for
his long loyal service to the club a few years ago, and was Chairman of the
Board for many years. He was instrumental in restoring the Club’s fortunes
some time back and was certainly responsible for the current strong financial
position we now enjoy. He was a very committed bowler, and he played his
250th game on Saturday 29th. Our deepest condolences to Anne and the
family.
Vale Vin Callander!

Ted “Ski” Witkowski
Ted, known by his nickname “Ski” tragically died in a house fire early in January.
He joined Heathmont in 2015 from Ringwood, and has been a regular player in the
H1 and H2 teams during that period. Ted won the club Pairs in 2017-18 and the
Club Triples in 2015-16, both with his son Tony. He also won the 2018 Amaroo
Classic, again with Tony. With his wife Vicki, ted ran our Friday Night “Barefoot
Bowls” for a few year’s. Our deepest condolences to Vicki, Tony and all the family.
Vale Ted Witkowski!

BOARD SECRETARY REPORT
The Board has decided that the area outside the double doors including the steps down to the Greens
needs to be significantly improved. We have been provided with a plan from Steve Douglas on how we
could modify this area (Thanks Steve!). We have made some changes to the original and we are in the
process of obtaining some quotes. In a further major development, the Board has decided that the irriga-
tion system for the top green needs to be replaced. Again, we will be obtaining some quotes for this very
important work. Rod MacGregor and Greg Boyd have resigned from the Board. We have co opted Terri
Verberne to the Board and her key task will be Membership Officer for bowling members.
Finally, you will have seen a separate notice of the passing of Vin
Callander a past Chairman and Life Member, and Ted Witkowski.
                                                                      Board Secretary
Vale Vin and Ted!!
                                                                      Peter Verberne

BOWS PRESIDENT REPORT
Welcome to 2022 everyone, it has already been a busy year with so many HBC bowlers competing (and
succeeding in tournaments and Region events). When do they find time to do the washing and lawn mow-
ing?
Pennant is ticking along well with many weekend and midweek sides well positioned for finals. Selectors
turn their attention to qualifying a few extra players for finals in case COVID and other circumstances pre-
vent some people from playing.
The first Games Played Milestone badges were recently handed out to players at the Coach’s night. The
statistics date back to 2006 so whilst some people made predictable remarks such as “I’ve been playing
much longer than 15 years”, it’s still great to be able to recognise players who have represented the Club
over such a long period. Congratulations to Craig Bryant, Vin Callander, Nick Dawe, Rod MacGregor, Greg
Pullen, Brian Siddles and Lorraine Siddles who have all played 250 games for Heathmont.
Peter Weber has transferred from Bayswater BC and has settled in
well. Please make Peter welcome when you meet him.
It is with great sadness that I report the sudden passing of Vin Calland-
er, a Life Member, former Chairman and tireless contributor to HBC.
Vin was “larger than life” and a part of the fabric of the Heathmont
Club, as Vin liked to call it. Vinnie was much loved and esteemed and
will be greatly missed. My condolences to Anne and family on Vin’s
                                    passing.

MID-WEEK PENNANT SELECTORS REPORT
We have turned the corner with 3 sides in the race for the finals. Our 1 st, 2nd and 4th sides are all currently
in 2nd place on their respective ladders.
Our 3rd side, after mostly playing other clubs 1st sides, are struggling at the bottom of their ladder and it will
take a mighty effort to avoid relegation.
It is at this time of the season that we are planning for finals. It is a Bowls Vic restriction that a finals player
must have played a minimum of 6 games in that side. To allow us some selection flexibility we will be
qualifying some 3rd side players to be eligible to play finals for the 4th side.
We would also like to know if you can’t play during finals starting on the 15th March, please indicate on the
availability list on the notice board.
Covid is starting to affect some of our players resulting in Mid-Week Selection
several temporary team changes, hopefully this won’t
                                                                Chair
become to disrupting.
                                                                Terry Doyle

                         NIGHT PENNANT REPORT
We are half way through the season with five rounds played and 5 rounds to go.
Heathmont 1 (Tuesday night) are currently sitting 4th on the ladder with 2 wins and
2 losses. Heathmont 2 (Wednesday night) are currently sitting on top of the ladder,
                         undefeated!!
Selections have been kept interesting as the dreaded Covid has had an affect on
player’s availability, but with extra players on the list it hasn’t been too difficult to
juggle things around. Thank you to everyone involved for their understanding and
                         co-operation.
Keep up the great work teams
and enjoy the rest of the season. Leonie Young

“CHALKING WITH THE COACH”
Hi All,
Last weekend we officially passed the halfway mark of the season and after being locked up all winter with
covid restrictions it’s been fantastic to be back out and amongst it. I personally am very surprised how
quick the first half of the season has gone. If you felt like you were missing bowls during the slow winter
then January and February this year is for you! The bowls schedule is out of control, with midweek pen-
nant, Thursday 7 a side, Saturday pennant (including upcoming double headers), club games and region-
al games there is hardly a day off at the moment.
I forgot to mention at the members night last week that I have had a few messages from people and con-
versations with Jan McGregor in regards to playing club championship games on pennant practice night.
I’ve spoken to Jan and we are both in agreeance that although not ideal given the current schedule we are
happy for people to schedule games on Thursday nights over the next few weeks. We can’t afford these
games to just keep banking up and it would be unreasonable to make people book in another day of
bowls during the week on top of everything going on. I also see the great benefit to having some club
games on a Thursday night getting played in front of the big crowds on the deck, it’s been great for club
moral(e) In the next couple of weeks when we break the back of the club games, I will be reminding peo-
ple its very important to start practicing Thursday night in our rinks again to ensure we are firing before a
big push before finals this year. There is no doubt in my mind that our better pennant results go hand in
hand with when we have most people on the training track. If you are looking at booking a club game on a
Thursday night make sure you mention it to Jan so she can keep track on how many rinks are potentially
booked out so we still have sufficient free for people wanting to practice. And Janice well done and thank
you for all your hard work with the championships this year!
At the members night I spoke about how as a club we set the standard for representation in regional
events as well as numbers they’re in supporting each other. I’ve had countless other clubs make comment
about our impressive participation and supportiveness within the club. It completely brings true to every-
thing I always talk about to do with club culture, together we can do amazing things. Although, I’ve been
made aware that some of our teams may not have been carrying this through to our pennant competitions.
I think its worth remembering how much of a difference it makes when your club mates watch and help get
you over the line, in particular if the overall board isn’t looking the best at the time. All the sections are very
tight at the moment so single rink wins will start to become very important. I would like to encourage eve-
ryone to remember this, so after your rink is finished whether its at home or away its important to offer
your opponent a drink then hang around and help and encourage your teammates to get over the line.
Outside that gentle reminder I would like to thank and congratulate everyone on there amazing results in
pennant, regional games and club games. The next month is a huge opportunity to consolidate our perfor-
mance and set ourselves up for an exciting finish to the year. Like I said at the members night last week,
this season has all the makings to be one of the best seasons ever. Its important to respect the position
we are in and stay in the moment. You can’t win next weeks game today but you can win today’s game
today and you can’t win the next end until this end is finished.
Love your work, Stay awesome

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2021-2022
LATEST ACTION:
PLEASE NOTE: Some of the “play by” dates are proving to be almost impossible to adhere to e.g.
Men’s Singles Round 3 to be played by 30th January. Please play these games as soon as you are
able and let me know results etc thank you.
MIXED PAIRS: Round 2 is all up to date, some interesting games have ensued with the sets play
format.
MINOR SINGLES: Al MacDonald already in the final – he will be looking to win this championship
after being runner-up last year. The other semi-final to be played by 27th February between Jason Bar-
rett and Peter Allen.
MEN’S SINGLES: Due to the unfortunate clashing of our club championship schedule with re-
gional events, most games in rounds 1 & 2 could not be played on Sunday 16th January. Those players
with protection are to organise their games to be played within 14 days of the first “play on” day. How-
ever the first day went ahead with a limited number of players and was overseen by Linda Gahan with
early assistance from Vicki Shanahan – to enable me to play in regional women’s pairs – so many
thanks to them.
No, it’s not Christmas! but Macca is keen to let everyone know that he and Aubrey “decked the Halls”!!
That is, Macca beat David Hall 25-19 and Aubrey beat Russell Hall 25-22, examples of the great
matches that have ensued.
Since then there have been a number of further games completed and ongoing, please let me know so
we can advertise the game on our Facebook page and Go Monters page on Messenger.
WOMEN’S SINGLES: Was scheduled for Sunday 23rd January but once again clashed with regional
Mixed Pairs – the outcome being that only 2 entrants in this event were available to play on the day!! (In
the end only one as I subbed for Olivia Slade but our opponents never showed up!! I guess they heard
about the substitution hahaha!!). Subsequently two matches have been played with many more being
scheduled in the week ahead so I will try and advertise when the games are being played.
WOMEN’S PAIRS: Carol Protopapas and Karen Barton have advanced to the final with a win
over Karen Tanti and Louise Whitehead; the other semi will be played as soon as practicable.
PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP: All games scheduled to be played by 23rd January have been complet-
ed so kudos to all involved. Plus some further rounds also played so keep it going, this is the idea so
you are not in the poo further down the line.
100 UP: As above.
MEN’S PAIRS: This event went ahead today as I type this overseen by Linda Gahan (with an
iron fist!). Once again some fantastic games with Mike Henderson/Brian Siddles just getting over the
line against John Paul / Ron Hopper(21-20); and Vic Tatnall / Greg Pullen in their second round going
down 13-14 to Daryle Gervasoni / James Gonera.

PLAYER AUCTION: Once again a fun night with Greg Boyd doing a great job as auctioneer; not
as big a prize pool as previously but still rather handy for those who have purchased the final winners!
This was followed by the draws for both Men’s and Women’s singles, with many top guns drawn
against each other – so look out for some potentially thrilling match ups. I will post these dates on Face-
book so please let me know when you intend to play.
Many thanks to Greg Boyd, Vicki Shanahan, Linda Gahan and Karen Tanti for your assistance on the
night.

Thanks everybody for your understanding and co-operation in the running of the club championships so
far.

                                                                                    (Con’d on Next Page)

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2021-2022 (Con’d from previous page)
  GENERAL:
Wednesday 26th January was free for club games and it was great to have 6 games being played in the
morning, before the heat (& humidity) of the day kicked in.
I am very pleased that everyone is trying their best to organise and play their games, it has been a very
difficult season for our club games schedule and I truly appreciate all efforts from all participants.
I am also collecting $8.00 entry fees when- Club Championship
  ever I am around!
Thanks everybody for your understanding Co-Ordinator
and co-operation in the running of the club
  championships so far.

“CITY OF MAROONDAH”-CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Citizen of the Year – Terri Verberne
The following is an extract from the council “Australia Day” awards. Congratulations to our Terrie
Verberne, winning the award (I believe) for the second time.

“The Ed’”

Terri Verberne was recognised as the 2022 Citizen of the Year for her incredible service, leadership and
volunteering in the community.

“I'm very grateful for this award. Most of us don't volunteer with any expectation of formal recognition. To
be named Citizen of the Year is a great honour and I proudly accept the award on behalf of all of those
who volunteer with Scouting and Lawn Bowls in the Maroondah community,” Terri said. “Volunteering is
something that I have done since my teens. The fantastic thing about volunteering is that you meet people
coming together for a common cause but often with so many different experiences/skill sets. We all benefit
from that shared experience,” said Terri.

Terri has contributed 20 plus years of ser-
vice to Scouts Victoria, including five years
as Maroondah District Commissioner. She is
a mentor to over 20 adults and is currently a
Group Leader.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and
lockdowns, Terri showed impeccable leader-
ship, resilience, care and initiative. From
continuing to champion the 600 youth and
130 adults through Zoom meetings, to work-
ing on multiple hall upgrades for our young
people, Terri epitomises what it means to be a dedicated volunteer.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Maroondah Council to complete the Scout hall upgrades
during 2022. It's a very exciting time with lots of infrastructure development in Maroondah,” Terri said.
SEASON 2021-22 WEEKEND PROMOTION’S AND RELEGATION’S
Members may not be aware of the changes in the “Metro Pennant Condition’s of Play” for Promo-
tion and Relegation for this season only!!!The following is an extract of the “C of P”. It makes for
some interesting reading, see how it effects your side.
7. Promotion & Relegation
As we progress into the 2022/23 season, for most divisions there will need to be a reduction of sections at the end of the 2021/22
season, to get back to a fair and workable post-sectional finals system. This will mean at the end of the coming 2021/22 season,
promotion and relegation will look different to what it has in the past . The desired outcome is to move all divisions in Weekend to 8
sections of 8 teams for the 2022/2023 season. The 6-a-side and 9-a-side competition section numbers will be dependent on en-
tries received.
7.1. Premier Division 7.1.1. No club will have more than one side in Premier Division.
7.1.2. Premier Division will have no promotion.
7.1.3. The bottom two (2) sides from Premier Division will be relegated to Division 1.
7.2. Division 1
7.2.1. The two (2) division grand-finalists will be promoted to Premier Division.
7.2.2. If one of the grand-finalists already has a side in Premier Division, the defeated semi-finalists will play off for the remaining
position.
7.2.3. If each of the grand-finalists already has a side in Premier Division, then the two losing semi-finalists will be promoted to
Premier Division.
7.2.4. If either of the two losing semi-finalist clubs already have a side in Premier Division, then the best performed side in any
section of Division 1 which does not already have a side in Premier Division will be promoted. BV Metropolitan Pennant Conditions
of Play 2021-22.V1.5 Page 38 of 42
7.2.5. The bottom two (2) sides in each section will be relegated to Division 2. In addition, the next two (2) lowest sides across all
sections will be relegated, based on points, then shot difference then shot percentage. A total of ten (10) sides will be relegated.
7.3. Division 2
7.3.1. The ten (10) section winners will be promoted to Division 1.
7.3.2. The bottom two (2) sides in each section will be relegated to Division 3. In addition, the next two (6) lowest sides across all
sections will be relegated, based on points, then shot difference then shot percentage. A total of twenty six (26) sides will be rele-
gated.
7.4. Division 3
7.4.1. The ten (10) section winners will be promoted to Division 2.
7.4.2. The bottom four (4) sides in each section will be moved to Division 4 for the following year. The next two (2) lowest sides
after finals have been completed will also be moved to Division 4 for the following season. This means, after section winners have
been decided, the lowest place teams who didn’t win the section. A total of fourty-two (42) sides will be placed in Division
4 for the following season.
7.5. Division4
7.5.1. The ten (10) section winners will be promoted to Division 3.
7.5.2. The bottom four (4) sides in each section will be moved to Division 5 for the following year. The next eighteen (18) lowest
sides after finals have been completed will also be moved to Division 5 for the following season. This means, after section winners
have been decided, the lowest place teams who didn’t win the section. A total of fifty-eight (58) sides will be placed in Division 5
for the following season.
7.6. Division 5
7.6.1. The ten (10) section winners will be promoted to Division 4.

                         MONDAY’S @ 5:30pm
Skills and Drills has continued uninterrupted over recent months, and as always, has enjoyed great sup-
port from our club members. The great highlight of recent sessions was when DOC, Simon Jeffery looked
after proceedings on January 10th and was joined by 28 keen and receptive participants, who have all
raved about how much they leant and benefited from Simon's advice and experience. As always, a huge
thanks to Rod MacGregor for looking after everyone's culinary needs.

With so many of us seemingly bowling 8 days a week at present given the
incredibly hectic club and regional schedules, please remember that Skills
and Drills will always be there, starting at 5.30pm, if your game needs a
little fine tuning.

2021 CHRISTMAS DINNER/DANCE
It seems such a long time ago, but our Club Christmas Dinner Dance held on the 17th of December last
year was a huge success. It seems our members were looking for a good night out after all the
“lockdowns”, and over 90 members (without any coaxing), put their name down and came along to enjoy a
lovely 2 course meal, and music from “The Rock Revival Band”, plus a few fun and games, A great night
was had by all, and special thanks to those who helped set up, and run the evening, namely Lorraine Sid-
dles, Keith and Barbara Smith, Garry Eaton, and Grahame Eslisk who organised all the raffle prizes from
our sponsors.

Interesting Footnote for Xmas Dinner/Dance. How was your side represented, (not including partners
 and guest’s). The 1’s=3, 2’s=6, 3’s=9,4’s=12, 5’s=5, 6’s=6, and Non Sat’ Pennant Bowler’s=7. Maybe
next year you can make your side the top team attending. Well Done the 4’s…..top for 2021
