12LESSONS FROM THE DESERT
Some years ago when I lived in the southwest, I would take day
trips into a small desert area of New Mexico. Such a contrast it pre-
sented to one who was accustomed to green lands and
fields. What struck me most was the bleakness of the terrain….. no
trees, no flowers, just miles of sand to behold in any direc-
tion. Commenting on such to my postal worker when I returned
home, he said, “ but did you ever see such a blue sky, and not a sin-
gle tree to mar its view!”.
In today’s gospel, Jesus is in the desert. It is not surprising that the
three great world religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, were all
born in the desert. It was through the desert that Moses led the
Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. It was from
the desert that John the Baptist came to herald the Messiah and
soon after Jesus followed to proclaim himself Messiah. Reflecting
on this, I came to realize the significance of the desert. The desert
is a kind of purgatory or testing place we must pass through to
reach paradise. What is impressive about the desert is its sheer ar-
idness. There is no vegetation, and apart from the occasional odd
tiny lizard, almost no animals - - - no distractions.
Retreating in the desert is a challenging experience. The silence is
almost total. In that bleak landscape, nothing comes between a
person and their God. One either discovers and encounters God, or
succumbs to feeling empty. The life that thrives here is the inner
life. Perhaps it is no surprise that monasticism, the institution dedi-
cated to fostering the inner life, was founded by a group called the
Desert Fathers. Western monasticism has so profoundly marked
Christianity that we are all now, in a sense, children of the desert.
Living now as many of us do, in built-up areas, sometimes even
piled high on top of each other in high-rise apartments, bombard-
ed day and night with the roar of traffic and the blare of electronic
music, and caught up in a scrambling pace of life, we are in dan-
ger of losing our desert roots. And with that our inner life. We
need to create a time and a space to nurture our spiritual lives.
Lent is such a time. The Spirit drove Jesus into the desert and he
remained there for forty days. Like Jesus, we should let the Holy
Spirit lead us out into the desert of Lent where we can confront the
bad habits (“devils”) that haunt our lives, and like Jesus, triumph
over them. That is the freedom, dignity, and gift that is offered in
today’s gospel.

me uno y me abrazo todo a ti.
No permitas, Señor, que jamás me separe de ti.

My Jesus,
I believe that you are truly present
with me always,

and the limits of these five senses I have,
I need some signs of your presence
in order to sense it.
The most powerful sign of your presence for me
is the moment I receive you
your Body and Blood in Holy Communion.
I cannot receive you that way now because of this
pandemic, so I ask you to help me in this moment
of spiritual Communion
– and please in other moments as well –
to feel your presence, your love,
your forgiveness of my failings,
your support in my difficulties, and temptations.
I embrace you as if I had just received you
sacramentally
and unite myself wholly to you.
Never let me be separated from you.
