                                                                                                                                                                                   Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan. As a child, she was
                                                                                                                                                                                always drawing and wanted to become a professional artist. Her mother
                                                                                                                                                                                discouraged Kusama from pursuing art and would even tear up her
                                                                                                                                                                                drawings. But in 1948, Kusama managed to convince her parents to let
                                                                                                                                                                                her study painting in Kyoto. In 1957 she moved to the United States for
                                                                                                                                                                                the freedom to follow her dreams.
                                                                                                                                                                                   While living as a struggling artist in New York, Kusama began to
                                                                                                                                                                                paint her famous Infinity Nets series. As seen in the painting No. F
                                                                                                                                                                                (1959), these paintings are made of seemingly endless circles that cover
                                                                                                                                                                                the entire canvas. At the time, pop artists such as Andy Warhol were

                                                                                                                                                                                dominating the American art scene. Kusama creations fit right in with
                                                                                                                                                                                this bright and fun pop art, but hers were more personal. Throughout
                                                                                                                                                                                the 1960s, Kusama created “happenings” (which were like art parties),
                                                                                                                                                                                where she would cover canvases, people, and even entire rooms with
                                                                                                                                                                                painted polka dots. In 1963, she began creating her Infinity Mirrored
                                                                                                                                                                                Rooms, which featured wall-to-wall mirrored rooms that she filled with

                                                  bestselling author, illustrator, and designer based
                                                                                                                                                                                polka-dotted objects or hanging lights. The mirrors reflected endlessly
                                                                                                                                                                                into each other, “obliterating” the viewer’s sense of space. Her work was
                                                                                                                                                                                featured at major galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art.
                                                                                                                                                                                   In 1973, Kusama’s mental health continued to decline, and she
                                                                                                                                                                                moved back to Japan. She continued to work through her challenges,
                                                                                                                                                                                and in 1977, chose to reside in a psychiatric hospital—where she

                                                                                                                                                                                health. Kusama purchased a nearby studio to create her art. For her,
                                                                                                                                                                                artwork is medicine: “I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and
                                                                                                                                                                                the only method I have found that relieves my illness is to keep
                                                                                                                                                                                creating art.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            In 1837, Harriet Powers was born into slavery near Athens, Georgia.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Along with the many brutal practices of slavery, teaching slaves to
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            read was against the law. But Harriet, like many of the women before
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            her, would use her artistry to create storytelling quilts to share
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            legends, Bible stories, and astronomical events. After the Civil War, in
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            1865, slavery was made illegal by the Thirteenth Amendment to the US
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Constitution. At the age of twenty-eight, Harriet Powers was finally
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            free, and she and her family managed to own some land and a home.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               In 1886, Harriet displayed her now-famous Bible Quilt at the Cotton
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Fair in Athens, Georgia. The quilt captured the eye of white art teacher
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Jennie Smith, who offered to purchase it on the spot for $10 (which
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            would be more than $240 today). Harriet could not bear to part with
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            her precious quilt and declined to sell it.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               In 1865 and 1866, the Black Codes were enacted in the South
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            to strip away the rights of newly freed slaves and to ensure that
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            plantations continued to have nearly free labor. The South was
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            struggling economically after the war. Times became hard for Harriet
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            and her family and they had to sell off parts of their land. Four years
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            after the Cotton Fair in Georgia, and after discussing it with her family,
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Harriet decided to sell her precious Bible Quilt. She sold it to Jennie
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Smith for $5 but made sure that Jennie wrote down a description of
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            the story each square told so that her quilt’s meaning would remain.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            This sale of her work helped Harriet’s family keep their home.
