Word of the Day
• Canopy (noun)
• the branches and leaves that spread out at the top of
a group of trees forming a type of roof.
• E.g.
• The sun was glistening through the top of the rainforest
  canopy.
• In the rainforest, most plant and animal life is not found
on the forest floor, but in the leafy world known as
the canopy. The canopy, which may be over 100 feet
(30 m) above the ground, is made up of the overlapping
branches and leaves of rainforest trees.

Guided Reading Task –
‘Rainforests’ Comprehension
• Today, you are going to read about Rainforests.
• This is helpful background information linked to our
class book, ‘Journey to the River Sea’, which is, of
course, set in the Amazon Rainforest.
• There are three levels of challenge in the
  comprehension – pick your challenge!
• The comprehension is with the resources on the
class page. Don’t worry if you can’t print – read the
text and questions on the screen and write down
your answers. Don’t forget to check and correct!

Maths Live Lesson –
10.00-10.30am
• Today, we are going to finish our work on adding and
subtracting fractions with different denominators by
  looking at some word problems.
• There are three levels of challenge on the worksheet in the
resources section of the class page – 1, 2 and 3 – pick your
challenge! (You can do more than one, if you like, or some
questions from each of the three challenges.)
• Don’t worry if you can’t print – work from the screen and
  write your answers on paper.
• Join Miss Pickup live on Teams at 10.00-10.30am.
• You will need:
   • A piece of paper
   • A pencil (and maybe a rubber?!)
   • A switched-on brain!
Maths – Adding and Subtracting Fractions
      with different denominators
• Today in Maths, we are going to finish off our
adding and subtracting fractions work by having a
  go at some word problems.
• We are going to add and subtract fractions with
different denominators, just like we’ve been doing
  all week.
• You need to read the word problems carefully, and
pick out the calculations that you need to do.
• Write each calculation down separately, just the
numbers, without the words to distract you.
Maths – Subtracting Fractions with
 denominators that are multiples
• There are three levels of challenge on the main
worksheet, getting harder from Challenge 1 to 3.
• If you are a Year 3, start with Challenge 1.
• If you are a Year 4, start with Challenge 2.
• Challenge 3 is for super confident Year 4s only! (You will
need to multiply both sets of fractions to make them
  the same number!)

• If you are finding this a little tricky, don’t worry – there
is another challenge, labelled Challenge A, which is
further practise at subtracting fractions with like
denominators, with missing number problems to do
today, so have a go at that instead!

Subtracting Fractions
• Subtracting fractions with the same denominator is
  really simple!
• Write down your calculation.

• Your answer will have the same denominator.

• Find the difference between the numerators – you have
  you answer!
• If you can, simplify the new fraction to its lowest
  form.

English – Informal Letters
• Today, your task is to write your informal letter.
• Imagine you are currently on holiday with a friend or
your family, and are writing to someone at home one
evening in the middle of the holiday – you could write
to a friend or a relative, such as a grandparent.
• You need to make sure that you use the informal letter
layout we looked at yesterday in my example letter (in
yesterday’s resources section on the class page) – this is
your success criteria (the list is also on the next slide).
• Remember to write in paragraphs, and make your
holiday sound interesting and exciting by describing in
detail what you have seen, what you have done, and
  what you will be doing.
English – Informal Letters
• Success Criteria: Informal Letters
   • Your address in the top right hand corner.
   • The date, under the address, leaving a line.
   • The salutation/greeting (Dear ……,)
   • The introduction – the first paragraph.
   • The body of the letter, in clear paragraphs.
   • The closing (All the best, Love from, See you soon, etc.)
   • The signature (Where you write your name).

• Remember, you will be writing in the first person. (I,
  my, we).
• Use my example letter to help you.

Dear Santa,

I am writing to thank you for the lovely presents you left at my house on Christmas Eve. I
couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them all and so beautifully wrapped. Your elves must
have been very busy this year.

I especially loved the bike and have been learning how to ride it, as I haven’t had one without
stabilisers before. The pink helmet is a perfect fit and I wear it to protect my head when I’m
on my bike in case I fall off.

My brother James loved his train set and has been playing with it everyday since you
delivered it. He loves the noises it makes and connecting all of the carriages together.

I hope you and Mrs Claus have a lovely holiday and the elves and reindeers have a well
deserved rest.

Love from,

Daisy xx

It has been like a dream and very
nice weather too. What a treat! We Daisy McClean,

We’ve spent lots of money as it isn’t Milton Keynes

    been worth it. MK3 3ET

Dear Gran,

How are you? Mum told me you haven’t been feeling very well. I have baked you some of
your favourite cakes and wondered when it would be possible for me to come and visit?

Hope to see you soon.

Lots of love,

I especially loved the bike and have been learning how to ride it, as I haven’t had one without
stabilisers before. The pink helmet is a perfect fit and I wear it to protect my head when I’m on my
bike in case I fall off.
How to Write an Informal Letter
Step 6 – Finish off your letter using an appropriate ending e.g. ‘Love from’ or ‘See you
soon’, followed by your name.

                                                                                        Daisy Happy,

Geography – Rivers
                 Oxbow Lakes
• Today, we are going to learn about a really cool feature of rivers –
oxbow lakes. The sheets mentioned below for Task Two and Task
Three are with today’s resources on the class page.
• Did you know that a river changes its course? It can carve out new
shapes, and create its own lakes. Rivers are truly amazing things!
• Task One: You are going to watch two short videos which
explain/show how oxbow lakes are formed (on the next slides).
• Task Two: You are going to read an information sheet, which also
explains how oxbow lakes are formed.
• Task Three: You are going to complete an activity to test your
knowledge of how oxbow lakes are formed. There are three levels
of challenge to choose from. If you can, print out the sheets, as it
is easier to cut and stick. If you can’t print, don’t worry – draw
your own diagrams and copy out the correct sentences beside
them to label each one correctly.
