CROSSING THE BRIDGE
Since its launch in 2014, the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” has established itself
as the world’s leading gathering of experts in youth player development. The Summit
is the flagship of the “Aspire in the World Fellows” program, which over the last three
years has brought together 50 of the world’s leading clubs, federations and leagues.
During the three previous editions of the Summit in Paris 2014, Berlin 2015 and
Amsterdam 2016, representatives of the “Aspire in the World Fellows” gathered to
discuss and share their view on modern youth training methodology. Thereby, the
“Aspire Academy Global Summit” uses a dynamic approach of communication and
encourages the Aspire Fellows to engage during a series of roundtable discussions
and workshops.
In addition, the Summit includes “Stars Chat”, sessions involving leading managers,
coaches and players. Speaker to date include Johan Cruyff, Ronald de Boer, Marc
Overmars, Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, Edwin van der Sar, Roberto Mancini, Thomas
Tuchel, Juan Sebastian Veron, Stefan Effenberg, Lothar Matthäus, Frank Rijkaard,
Clarence Seedorf, Gabriel Heinze and Patrick Kluivert.
Since the first edition of the Summit in 2014, the Aspire Fellows community has
continued to work together, sharing information and experiences and engaging in
debate and discussion through The Aspire Fellows web platform. The website is the
world only platform hosting detailed information on the training methodology of
the world’s elite clubs and federations. The platform also offers exclusive interviews
with world leading coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte, Roberto Di
Matteo, Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Martinez alongside presentations from leading
performance practitioners.
7ASPIRE ACADEMY GLOBAL SUMMIT
MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER
Aspire Academy is bringing together football experts from around the world for the
fourth consecutive year, for the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” to discuss issues
around ‘Football Performance and Science.’
During the two-day event held in London, some of the most influential figures in world
football alongside leading members of the scientific and performance community
will discuss contemporary in training methodology. Participants from international
football clubs and federations will also present details of their approaches to
identifying, selecting and developing talented young players.
Last year’s edition in Amsterdam brought together 150 football and performance
experts to address recent developments in the sport and explore the importance
of continual improvements and optimization of performance in attaining sporting
excellence. In addition, the 2016 Global Summit also launched a new concept – the
‘Master Class’, sessions taught by renowned global speakers.
It has always been a major goal of Aspire Academy to not only create a community
like this, but to further develop football in general. In order to achieve this goal, a
new concept was introduced in 2016 called “The Fellows’ Extended Community”.
This approach gave each member of the “Aspire Fellows” the opportunity to issue
“wild cards” to affiliate clubs to enable them to attend the summit in Amsterdam.
This afforded them the chance to attend presentations and lectures as well access
to selected areas of the Fellows’ online platform.
Since the future focus of the program will be geared towards best practice and
research informed practice, the 2017 Global Summit in London is going to have a
new feature. After establishing a research committee in the past year, the Fellows
were encouraged to submit research projects, the best of which would be chosen by
the committee to be presented in London. It is hoped this initiative will encourage
clubs to think about potential collaborative research projects in areas that will be
of mutual benefit to their respective organizations.

TAKING THE SUMMIT
TO STAMFORD BRIDGE
The 4th edition of the “Aspire Academy Global Summit” takes the event to London,
where it is going to be held at the home of Chelsea FC, Stamford Bridge. The home
ground of Chelsea FC has been used as a venue for England international matches
and FA Cup Finals. It has also hosted numerous other major sporting events, including
rugby union, speedway, greyhound racing, baseball and American football. The
stadium’s highest official attendance is 82,905, for a league match between Chelsea
and Arsenal on 12 October 1935.
In the past, London has established itself as a city of sports. The 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games showcased the city’s passion and enthusiasm for world-class
sports competitions. Londoners are fanatical about sport and London has a history
of hosting a variety of high profile sporting events that keep bringing some of
the greatest athletes on the planet to England’s capital. The 2017 portfolio alone
includes major events such as the IAAF World Athletics Championships, the World
Cup of Gymnastics, the World Series Boxing and the ATP Tennis World Tour Finals
in addition to annual highlights such as the Wimbledon Tennis Championships,
the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.

TOPICS DESCRIPTION
TOPIC 1: “TALENT IDENTIFICATION – NATURE VS. NURTURE”
As the price of footballers in the transfer market rapidly rises each season,
the capacity to identify, select and develop talented young footballers is important
for all the football clubs and academies around the world. Talent identification is
a complex process as it requires the consideration and assessment of attributes
and qualities in a number of areas including physical, technical, biological and
psychological. This topic discusses various frameworks and processes used by the
Aspire Fellows Community to identify talented young footballers.
TOPIC 2: “STRENGTH METHODOLOGY – WHY, WHEN, AND HOW”
There are many questions when it comes to strength training for youth footballers.
At what age should certain aspects be trained? What type of strength training
methods should be employed? What are the underlying goals and principles of the
methodologies used? With many training methods available, each club can vary
significantly in how they develop strength in their youth. This topic discusses the
strength training methodologies used by football clubs and why they have chosen
their specific approaches.
TOPIC 3: “FROM YOUTH TO SENIOR – HOW TO MANAGE THE LEAP”
The development pathway of youth players from academy teams into the 1st team
is a contentious topic. The transition can involve substantial changes in training
and match workload, and their immediate environment due to the greater pressure
to win at the senior level. This topic discusses the strategies and pathways used
by the Aspire Fellows community to assist players in this transition from youth to
senior level.

Anti-Doping Lab (ADL) Qatar is the first specialized laboratory of its kind in the Middle
East. The state of the art facility will provide anti-doping testing for athletes across the
C
Gulf region as well as West Asia and the rest of the world. Doping control tests will be
M
administered during competition, training and even in the off-season to catch cheats and
protect athletes.
Y
Supported by a team of highly qualified scientists, ADLQ is already compliant with

Annually, ADLQ hosts its symposium which has become an international event that is
dedicated to issues related to sport, doping and science. It has started in 2011 under the
theme (The Fight against Doping), then 2012 (Biomedical and Translational Research),
2013 (the History of Doping and Anti-Doping), 2014 (Anti-Doping; Sport Integrity and
Public Health) and 2015 (Global Trends in Anti Doping Research). The event is meant to
raise awareness on the topics discussed and presented by the experts of their fields from
inside Qatar as well internationally, and the symposium is open to public.
Moreover, the Lab has started a Junior Scientists’ Symposium since 2013. It promotes
original research and experimentation in the life sciences at the graduate level and
publicly recognizes junior scientists for their achievements. Another initiative ADLQ
implemented is the Café Scientific initiative, which has been already launched in other
parts of the world where “ for a cup of coffee, anyone can come to a café in a certain date
to explore the latest ideas in science and technology”.KEY CONTACTS For Summit Info Gabriela Ubidia Football Performance & Science Department Aspire Academy Office: +(974) 44136534 Fax: +(974) 44136060 @: gabriela.ubidia@aspire.qa Nelly Frangie Football Performance & Science Department Aspire Academy Office: +(974) 44136221 Fax: +(974) 44136060 @: nelly.frangie@aspire.qa For any inquiries on Aspire Academy, contact the Marketing & Communications department at : marcom@aspire.qa
