Good Bye 2020

Just about everyone I talk to is ready to put 2020 behind them and push on to a
new year. Unfortunately, the challenges of COVID-19 are not going away with
the flip of the calendar page. At The Shepherd's Center we faced challenges,
but we also celebrated milestones, created new successful programming, and
our staff became a stronger team as we worked together to promote and
support successful aging in a completely different "landscape."

We started off 2020 with record numbers of transportation requests....an
average of 125 per week, many of those requests being fulfilled by our faithful
volunteers. In February we welcomed two new staff members, Carol Ann and
Fay. We held a super-fun party to chase away the Winter Blues, planned our
Good Bye 2020 - The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston ...
annual Volunteer Appreciation luncheon and began scheduling book sale
volunteers and BOOM --COVID hit. All of our volunteer activity stopped, we
had to use paid transportation services for essential medical trips (dialysis &
cancer treatments) and we all went to work from home for the next few weeks.

Many people thought that we'd just shut our doors and wait for it all to be over,
hoping that our organization would survive the financial strain of the
pandemic. After all, when you serve older adults and you can't physically be
with them anymore, what can you do? How do you have activities when you
can't be together? This is where our wonderful (and somewhat crazy!) staff got
creative and collaborative. We found ways to engage folks virtually. We
engaged volunteers, although many, many less than we normally do, to make
deliveries, send cards, and make phone calls. Our transportation program,
thanks to grant funding, is providing about 130 trips per week using paid cab &
van services. We started online vital living programs, getting some of our
instructors onboard to do line dancing, yoga, Tai Chi, as well as the ever
popular "Thinking Outside the Box" discussion group and "Way Back
Wednesday" history program. We got folks in the community to provide
informational seminars and workshops. We have had a blast playing games
online on Thursday afternoons.

We realize that while this year was a challenge, it was also an opportunity to do
some new, exciting things. We've started a tablet lending program (see below
the schedule) and we have the ability to help anyone who wants to learn the
technology. We started a puzzle lending library. We've been able to expand
caregiver support services. Virtual programming has allowed us to engage new
volunteers from places like Alaska, Texas, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Because many folks are working from home, we're engaging volunteers who
are young adults and mid-career; the opportunities for intergenerational
programming are expanding.
2020 marked our 35th year of "Promoting and Supporting Successful Aging." It
also marked Sam Matthews' 20th anniversary with the Shepherd's Center.
This year Sam was recognized as one of the WS Journal's "Seven over
Seventy" for his contributions to our community.

2020 was indeed a year of challenges...the year of the great toilet paper
chase...the year of the mask...the year everyone cleaned their house while
quarantined and brought us their unwanted books...and the year that kept us
apart physically and helped us to grow closer together in ways we didn't know
existed.

So goodbye 2020 and welcome 2021...while we look forward to the day when
we can actually hug you all, we have some really great new programming in
store for you this spring. So stay tuned...more details next week.

                       HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
