CITY OF LEICESTER With a population of more than 300,000, Leicester is the largest city in the east Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. Its importance was first recognised by the Romans and later by the Danes, who used it as a strategic stronghold to control the Midlands. Since then, it has developed into a major commercial and manufacturing centre, known better for the diversity of its trade than for its dependence on a single industry. It is also a historic meeting place. For centuries, people of different races and cultures have gathered in Leicester, creating a rich and unique heritage. This diversity continues today and continues to enrich city life. Leicester is also famous for its Golden Mile - a true Indian bazaar, with a dazzling array of shops and restaurants bringing alive a genuine flavour of the sub-continent. Leicester’s Town Hall was the first civic building to be built in the Queen Anne style, made of red brick and housing a large clock tower. Leicester is more recently known of course for the king in the car park: Richard III, whose final resting place was uncovered just a few years ago. Sporting success has also made Leicester famous and school is located very close to Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Leicester Tigers Rugby Club and Leicester City Football Club. The Football Club has enjoyed a modern fairytale in winning the Premier League in 2015-16; and a recent tragedy in the death of club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and 4 others. This has impacted profoundly on our community and Granby children sent their own book of condolence to the Club. (Credits: Leicester City Council) 3
ABOUT AYLESTONE The historic village of Aylestone was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, named in Anglo-Saxon as ‘Aegel’s Tun’ or Aegel’s settlement. Its ancient and medieval history can still be seen in many streets and architectural features. Aylestone Hall and Gardens (known to our children as the ‘flower park'), dates from 1339 and Charles I is thought to have sheltered here during the siege of Leicester in 1645. The local St Andrews church, with whom we have a close relationship, is 800 years old and has much historical interest. It also has a Parish chest with three locks; the chest could only be opened if all three key holders were present. We are very lucky to have a magnificent natural resource on our doorstep, which we make the most of all through school: Aylestone Meadows. Here the children enjoy Forest School, make visits to study both the River Soar and Grand Union Canal, use for sporting and cycling events, and take inspiration for art, literature and creativity. The Meadows also follows the disused Great Central Railway - once one of the most important lines in the country. The nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a haven for wildlife. A herd of traditional Leicestershire rare breed Longhorn cattle can often be found grazing the rich grass fields near the medieval Packhorse Bridge, which dates from the 15th century. Our school houses air raid shelters underneath the playground, and this was the inspiration for a community project, which involved our children and older members of the community telling and recording their air raid shelter stories. Check out www.airraidshelterstories.co.uk for more information. We are also lucky to have a considerable archive of school materials, including the Head Master’s log book and the ‘Punishment Book’ recording the reasons for and amount of corporal punishment inflicted - something we certainly don’t do at Granby these days! Many older residents still refer to the village centre, Aylestone crossroads, as ‘The terminus’ because this was where the tramline used to end; and many of our families live in Old Aylestone, which is still known as ‘the village’. This is why we describe Granby as “a village school in the heart of the City.” (Credits: St Andrew’s Church; Grand Union Canal; Pinterest) 4

She says: “Growth mindset is where pupils understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence… They believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.” (Standford University’s Carol Dweck on the Growth Mindset and Education. OneDublin.org) This is summarised in our vision as our belief that… You Can! 7

This is led and staffed by experienced TAs and is well loved by parents and children alike. The team also offers a one-week holiday play scheme in the summer holidays. Our 39 place nursery for children aged 3 and 4 offers universal hours (15 per week); and for those who qualify, 30 hours per week free childcare. Families who don’t qualify for additional free hours can purchase extended nursery sessions. A 3 hour session is charged at £12. Children bring their own packed lunches and are charged £2 per child per day as a contribution towards the cost of staffing the 45 minute lunch break. We also provide a range of Extended Learning Opportunities which take place straight after school until 4:30 pm Mondays to Thursdays. These clubs have a limited number of places and may be offered to limited age ranges or year groups. They differ each term and examples include: circus skills, cricket, choir, street dance, football, arts and crafts, gymnastics, gardening club and many more! Our choir recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall – an experience of a life time for us all! 9
CURRENT STAFF TEAM Classroom Teachers – 16 (14 FTE) Cleaning staff – 4 (Part time) HLTAs – 4 Office Team – 3 Lunch time supervisors – 10 Premises & IT - 2 TAs – 28 (Various hours) SAFEGUARDING We have a team of 4 Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) who manage the safeguarding workload and work in partnership with other agencies to keep children safe. Our induction for all new staff and volunteers includes an introduction to our policies and procedures. Staff and governors access whole school safeguarding training at least every two years; and our parent-reader and PTA volunteers are offered a group training session on safeguarding every term. Our Ofsted Inspection highlighted a strong culture of ensuring that pupils are safe and well-cared for, and one parent praised the information they receive about the school’s approach to anti-bullying. Pupils said that bullying is very rare, but they knew what to do if it happened and were confident that an adult would deal with it successfully. All children know that they can talk to staff about any problems they may be experiencing. EQUALITY At Granby Primary School, we welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2014 to show due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation; advance equality of opportunity between those people who share protected characteristics and those who do not; and foster good relations between different people whilst promoting community cohesion.
