of leadership, we will be “undaunted” by the

Huntsville Chapter (AL)

Members of the HAC-NAASC on the evening of their annual scholarship fundraiser.

This year, the Huntsville Area Chapter of the National Alumnae Association (HAC-NAASC) returned to
jazz for its annual fundraiser, and a familiar name to loyal supporters returned as well. Mr. Joe Jennings,
former director of the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble, and his musical partner, Howard Nicholson,
presented the Joe Jennings and Howard Nicholson Quintet for “An Evening of Jazz” on Saturday,
March 9th. The concert was held at the Huntsville Botanical Garden’s Grand Hall and was well-
attended by friends, family, and community supporters of Spelman. Toni Terrell, Program Director of
local WHRP 94.1 radio and longtime HAC-NAASC supporter, served as Mistress of Ceremonies.

As part of its commitment to give back to the college and serve as community ambassadors, the HAC-
NAASC contributes the entire concert proceeds to the Dr. Bessie Washington Jones Scholarship Fund,
which assists area students attending Spelman. In addition to ticket sales, several Huntsville
Metropolitan businesses, civic and social organizations, and churches provided financial sponsorship
for the fundraiser.

During intermission, two of the HAC’s members were recognized for their recent accomplishments.
Tawnya Plummer-Laughinghouse, C’95, was invited to celebrate International Women’s Day with
NBC’s Today Show in New York on Friday, March 8th, as one of the representatives of the Marshall Space
Flight Center. She is currently the Program Manager for the Technology Demonstration Missions
program. Also recognized was Renee Knight, C’87, as she will be singing at Carnegie Hall in New York

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens hosted a conversation on the state of art museums, with
distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D. The talk addressed diversity and
inclusion work in museums, starting a much-needed dialogue and igniting inspiration for continuing to
correct inequities across the museum field, better represent the community’s museums serve, and build
on the lessons of the past. There were two lectures available for the community to attend on Sunday,
