Political objective of mobility
Mobility
The MSCA are based on the principle of physical mobility:
researchers who receive funding have to move from one country
to another to acquire new knowledge, skills and competences,
and develop their research career. Researchers are also strongly
encouraged to move between sectors and disciplines.
While virtual mobility does not have the same multifaceted
impact on the development of individuals and sustainable
cooperation among organisations as physical mobility, it can
however complement it, facilitate long-distance collaboration
and be an effective means to faster achieving research and
training objectives. In this regard, all MSCA proposals are
encouraged to explore opportunities offered by e-infrastructures
and related services, in particular those provided through
GEANT, the pan-European research and education network.

Choice of topic: open to all fields of research.
Host organisation: located in Europe.
• “Europe” = EU Member States (MS) and Associated Countries (AC).
• “Third Country” = neither Member State nor Associated Country
Postdoc Fellow:
o PhD Degree obtained by time of deadline
o Maximum eight years of Research experience after date of
awarded PhD
o Exceptions can be deducted e.g. parental leave, career breaks,
work outside research, research outside Europe for reintegrating
researchers

moving within Europe
o E.g. incoming to Sweden
Not have resided or carried out main activity more than 12
months during the last 3 years in the country of the potential
host institution before call deadline
Nationality: Any
2 years fellowship
Optional: + 6 months placement in non-academic European
organization
Letter of Commitment from the non-acad organization
Example:
Australian citizen, incoming to KI (Sweden). Already at KI, but resided or
have main activity for less than 12 months by 15th Sep 2021.

National (citizenship) or a long-term resident of an EU Member
State or Associated Country.
Move(d) directly from third country to the EU/AC country
Exact criteria when call opens.
Example:
Swedish citizen, PhD from Uppsala Univ. Postdoc in USA 2 years,
wants to re-integrate to Sweden. Activity time in Sweden max 12
months during 20180916 – 20210915 (3 years dating back from
deadline).
French citizen, PhD from France. Postdoc in USA, wants to re-
integrate to Europe. Have no previous activities in Sweden.

Outgoing phase (12-24 months) = move from any country to a Third Country
outside EU/Associated country
Mandatory Return phase (12 months) = direct return to the host institution located
in a Member State/Associated Country.
Not have resided or carried out main activity more than 12 months during the last 3
years in the third country institution by time of deadline.
Nationality: National (citizenship) or a long-term resident of an EU Member State
or Associated Country
Can start the project in the EU country (max 3 months) and then move to the Third
Country
Secondments allowed during outgoing phase; not allowed during return phase.
Examples:
Spanish national, outgoing phase to USA, return phase to Sweden.
Long-term resident in Sweden, currently in Sweden. Start project in Sweden,
Outgoing phase to Australia, then return to Sweden
