Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Greetings, I hope you had a restful summer with plenty of time spent enjoying the company of your family and
friends. As summer comes to a close, I along with the entire staff of Renaissance High School wish to take this
opportunity to welcome all new and returning students and parents to the 2021-2022 school year. Welcome to
the “Home of the Knights” where your “Character Counts!” It is our belief that once a student crosses the threshold
of our doorway they are “At Promise,” a student that will be embarking on an incredible new journey, one for whom
we all hold high expectation of great things to be accomplished!

As the first day of school approaches for RHS in Santa Paula on August 11th, our primary goal is to ensure a safe
opening of schools for students and staff.

Our focus this year 2021-2022 (as always), is to ensure that all students succeed and continue to excel. This success
is accomplished when student education begins at home and continues in schools with the support of parents,
educators and community mentors. It takes a Village to Raise a Child; we are all part of this Village.

This booklet contains critical information such as the Annual Notice & Discipline Policies and Procedures to Parents
and Guardians, registration, emergency health form, school calendar, bell schedules, dress code, and disciplinary
procedures just to name a few. All forms need to be read, signed and returned in person at time of registration,
which is scheduled for Monday, August 9th. In the beginning pages of the booklet, you will find a check off sheet
designed to assist you with organizing your forms for registration. Please follow the direction, which will help
expedite the registration process.

Please note the following:
First: No student will be issued a schedule of classes if the informational forms contained in this booklet are
not returned completed with proper signatures.
Second: Electronic device distribution (for those student whom do not have one) will take place August 10th,
all students will be required to have a technology device form on file prior to receiving a device; form is
contained in this booklet.

Be advised the first day of school is Wednesday, August 11, 2021
Back to School Night is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2021
School Site Council Meetings will be held the 3rd Thursday of the month.

I encourage all parents and guardians to continue to be more involved in the education of your student, research has
shown the greater the parent involvement the greater the success of your student. Please join with us in being
involved with your student and their educational experience. There is an African proverb that states, “It takes a
village to raise a child,” please come and be part of our village!

Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting with you soon.

Sincerely,

Robin Gillette, Principal

Estimados padres, tutores y estudiantes:

Atentamente,

Robin Gillette, Directora

July 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Santa Paula Unified School District is working hard toward becoming the best district in Ventura
County. We want to ensure that every student meets our rigorous academic criteria, and
graduation requirements. We are proud of the giant steps we are making toward improving
student achievement, but we continue to need your help to insure your child is at school each and
every day.
Every day counts in a child’s education! Each day a student misses school, he/she gets more
than two days behind his/her peers. Students must make up missed class work and catch up with
new learning at the same time. Attendance also counts towards funding for schools. Schools
only receive funding for students who are actually in class. Every day a student misses school,
even for excused absences, the school loses over $45.00 per day, the equivalent of approximately
three library books.
Please support our efforts by helping to get your child to school every day. You can do this by:

   - Planning your family vacations during the summer months or when school is on holiday.
   - Teaching you child to be on time for school each day.
   - Making sure your child stays home only when he/she is sick.
   - Asking your child’s doctor to schedule appointments before and after school hours.
   - Bringing your child to school before and after doctor appointment.

We know you want the very best education for your child, and we do too. By understanding that
Every Day Counts, together we can provide your child the very best. We look forward to a
successful remainder of the school year.

Yours truly,

Dr. Robin Gillette,

Principal

Esperamos tener
un buen año escolar.

Atentamente,

Robin Gillette

ATTENDANCE / TARDY POLICY:

Compulsory Attendance (EC 46010, 48200-48201, 48260-48263 and WIC 601) Parents are legally required to send
their children, between the ages of 6 and 18, to school regularly and to make certain they are on time each day. Parents
may be requested to appear before the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) and, subsequently, be referred to
the District Attorney and/or Youth Services (Probation) for legal action when attendance, tardiness, and/or behavior
problems occur

The attendance/tardy policy intend to reflect the importance of student participation in daily classroom activities. A
vital part of the educational process is the student’s personal interaction with the teacher and his/her peers. Excessive
absences also put an extra burden on the student and the teacher in attempting to make up work that is missed.
Excessive tardiness is a disruption to the teacher and other students when class is in session. It is also the purpose of
this policy to emphasize the importance of being on time in preparation for a student’s entrance into society. Students
are considered tardy if they are not at their workstation when the tardy bell rings. THE TEACHER DEFINES THE
WORKSTATION, but the minimum requirement is that students are in the classroom when the bell rings. If a student
is more than thirty (30) minutes late to class, he/she is no longer tardy, but is considered absent by the Attendance
Office and the classroom teacher. A student who is tardy more than thirty (30) minutes from his/her class may
be placed in ISS for the remainder of the period.

State law severely restricts parent/guardian rights to excuse a student from school (Ed. Code 48205). Parents/guardians
are advised that they may not legitimately excuse students from school except for reasons of illness or injury, a medical
appointment, quarantine, jury duty or death in the immediate family. Absences for any other reason are classified by
law as Unexcused. You may be required to validate a reason for an absence of your student. A student may not be
able to make up work missed because of an unexcused absence. If a student is going to be absent for any reason, the
parent must notify the Attendance Office by note or telephone call.

Students are allowed to have up to ten (10) parent/guardian verified excused absences per school year. Upon the
eleventh (11th) absence, the parent must provide an illness verification by a physician or public health nurse stating
the student was too ill to attend school on those days reported. Failure of the parent or guardian to provide requested
documentation will cause the absence to be reported as unexcused/unverified (truancies) and may result in SARB
referral or citation.

When a student is absent, their parent/guardian is requested to call to report the reason for the absence at 525-
4407, Ext. 22808/22819. If you cannot call the Attendance Hotline, please send a note with the student when they
return to school.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS REQUIRED FOR A NOTE OR TELEPHONE CALL

Student’s full name, grade, date of absence, reason of absence, name and relationship to student of the person
writing the note or placing the telephone call. Signature of parent/guardian on the note

If the student’s parent/guardian has not called to clear the absence and the student does not bring a note when they
return to school, the absence will be classified as unexcused. If the absence remains uncleared for three (3) days, it
automatically becomes unexcused.

1 Unex. Abs. Automatic/recorded message sent, student/teacher classroom conference.
2 Unex. Abs. Automatic/recorded message sent, letter sent and/or telephone call to parent from teacher.
3.Unex. Abs. A computer-generated letter (first letter sent from the Attendance Office stating that the student may
fail the class due to his/his attendance; with a notice to attend a parent conference; copy is sent to
                   counselor and teacher.
4 Unex. Abs. Computer generated letter (second letter) is sent from the Attendance Office stating that on the next
unverified absence the student may fail the class due to his/her attendance; copy is sent to counselor and teacher and
Outreach Coordinator to arrange a home visit.. Teacher must notify the counselor in writing his/her intent to do so.
5 Unex. Abs. Computer generated letter (third letter) is sent from the Attendance Office notifying the parent their
son/daughter has failed the class due to his/her attendance. Copies will be forwarded to the Guidance Office. Individual
counselors generate a letter to inform the parent that the process to drop the students from the class has started and
the parent's rights to appeal. Students will be dropped from the class, unscheduled from the class or administratively
placed in alternative education under contract if the attendance problem persists.
A parent may petition for a hearing relative to their child’s absences within five (5) days of notification. A committee
for this purpose will be created through the Guidance Office under the aegis of the student’s counselor. This committee
will convene to hear a parent’s petition within five (5) days of notification and shall be composed of a teacher, a staff
member, a counselor, and an administrator. The committee will decide whether to grant re-enrollment of the student
into the class. Any agreement to “make-up” the time and missed assignments must be contracted between the student,
counselor and the referring teacher. The student shall remain in the class until the committee renders a decision.

Students will also be referred to SARB for processing into the juvenile court system, as school attendance is
mandatory by law. Habitually truant students may be placed on probation, be detained and their parents may
be required to pay a fine.

TRUANCY DEFINITIONS – EC 48260, 48262, AND 48263.6
A student is considered truant after three absences or three tardies of more than 30 minutes each time or any
combination thereof and the absences or tardies are unexcused. After a student has been reported as a truant three or
more times in a school year and the district has made a conscientious effort to meet with the family, the student is
considered an habitual truant. A student who is absent from school without a valid excuse for 10% or more of the
schooldays in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date, is considered a chronic truant.
Unexcused absences are all absences that do not fall within EC 48205.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM – EC 60901
A student is considered a chronic absentee when he/she is absent on 10% or more of the school days in one school
year, from the date of enrollment to the current date. Chronic absenteeism includes all absences – excused and
unexcused – and is an important measure because excessive absences negatively impact academic achievement and
student engagement.

AVOIDING ABSENCES, WRITTEN EXCUSES
Santa Paula Unified School District urges parents to make sure their children attend school regularly and to schedule
medical and other appointments after school or during school holidays. The district also asks that travel or other
absences be avoided during the time school is in session. The higher the district’s daily attendance rate, the more a
student will learn and the greater the amount of funding that the district will receive from the state for classroom
instruction and academic programs. The school calendar is designed to minimize problems for families which plan
vacations around traditional holiday periods, and thereby minimize student absences.

Following an absence, a student is required to bring a written excuse from home when returning to school. Illnesses,
and doctor and dental appointments are considered excused absences. Absences without a written excuse are recorded
 as unexcused

TARDINESS
Children should be encouraged to be prompt as part of their training and developing good habits. They are expected
to be at school on time. Frequent tardiness may be considered truancy under state law. Repeated tardies in excess of
30 minutes lead to the student being designated as truant.

The main gate to the school will be closed when the morning tardy bells rings, tardy students must enter through the
main office and sign in on the tardy form, student signatures must be legible, student must use correct name, time and
state reason for their tardiness.

Please be advised that notes, phone calls or visits from parents/guardians to excuse tardies will not be accepted.
Only a verified medical excuse (doctor’s note) will be accepted.

The staff of Renaissance School is eager to work with families as they strive to help their student improve their
attendance. We will meet individually with students and their parents or with the School Attendance Review Team to
assist struggling students. As most of our students are behind in credits, regular attendance is the most reliable way
for students to improve their performance at school and to “make-up” credits that need to be earned for a high school
diploma. Students who are truant or tardy will make-up hours missed by attending Saturday School or after school
detention, before any credits will be issued. Students must maintain an attendance rate of 85% in order to receive
Course credit. If attendance is below 85%, all credits earned will be withheld until attendance time is made up.
LEGALLY EXCUSED ABSENCES:
Dr.’s appointment
Illness verified by school nurse
Death in the immediate family
Court appointment for student
Religious observance

FAMILY TRIPS AND VACATIONS WILL BOT BE EXCUSED ABSENCES
PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PLAN FAMILY TRIPS AND VACATIONS OUTSIDE
OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

ATTENDANCE FOR 18 YEAR OLD STUDENTS
Any student who reaches the age of 18 years and is still enrolled at Renaissance School is required to sign a school
attendance and behavior agreement. We are happy to support our students in their endeavors to earn a high school
diploma; they must maintain excellent attendance and complete credits on a regular basis in order to stay enrolled in
school. Eighteen year old students will sign an agreement which:

    • Formally notifies them of the law regarding compulsory attendance
    • Establishes a set level of 85% attendance
    • Establishes a minimum of 25 credits per quarter to be earned
    • Reinforces the student commitment to following all school rules

Eighteen year old students will be evaluated regarding their signed contracts each month, when the progress reports
are issued. A determination will be made at that time regarding continued enrollment

GRADES AND CREDITS
All classes needed to meet the Santa Paula Unified School District graduation requirements are offered at Renaissance
High School.

All courses are designed to take 60 hours of student work to earn 5 credits (or 12 hours for one credit). All assigned
work must be completed – there is no option to “skip” or “miss” an individual assignment. Additionally, in order to
demonstrate mastery, all courses must be completed with 70% accuracy to receive credit. Individual teachers will
work with students in a variety of ways in order to achieve 70% mastery including re-doing or correcting assignments,
completion of additional assignments or sometimes re-taking unit tests. Students must maintain an attendance rate
of 85% in each semester in order to receive primary credit. No extra credit work will be provided unless the
student has 85% attendance rate. You must be in school!

ARRESTS OF TRUANTS/SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REVIEW BOARDS – EC 48263 and 48264
The school attendance supervisor, administrator or designee, a peace officer, or probation officer may arrest or assume
temporary custody during school hours, of any minor who is found away from his/her home and who is absent from
school without valid excuse within the county, city or school district. A student who is an habitual truant may be
referred to a School Attendance and Review Board (SARB).

EVITANDO AUSENCIAS, EXCUSAS ESCRITAS
