Hiking
H
iin the Karnischen Alpen / Gailtaler Alpen
A Paradise for hikers and mountaineers 3
Hiking enthusiasts are truly spoilt for choice in Nassfeld, a region with so many paths and trails that it is impossib-
le to explore them all during just one holiday. Attractions include themed hiking routes, geotrails, long-distance
walks, summit ascents, circular hikes, rock climbing and walks over the border into neighbouring Italy.
Nassfeld‘s location between mighty peaks and glistening lakes makes it the ideal starting point for exploring the
network of over 1000 km of hiking trails in the sunny south of Carinthia

Explore the diverse landscape on foot

Keen hikers and nature enthusiasts will enjoy the 25 themed hikes in the region, including two long-dis-
tance routes („Karnischer Höhenweg“ and „Gailtaler Höhenweg“) and two pilgrimage trails („Marienpilerweg“
and „Weg des Buches“). Other hiking routes, such as the geotrails, also give walkers a chance to find out more
about the nature and history of the region in a hands-on and interactive way. Those with a head for heights can
explore the many family-friendly via ferrata, head for the high-rope adventue park or enjoy a bird‘s-eye
view of the landscape on a high-speed zipwire. Among the most popular attractions for families with children
are the Aqua Trail and the Smugglers‘ Mile with its comic-book adventure tales of the „Pramollo Wilde Bande“.

Don‘t miss out on the chance to sample some local cuisine at one of the mountain huts that can be easily re-
ached on foot. Indeed, certain local products such as the dried bacon and cheese traditional to the Gailtal Valley
are so renowned that they have been awarded special protected status by the European Union.

Tip! A dip in the beautiful Pressegger See lake is a great way to cool off at the end of the day!

”Prevention is better than cure“ – knowing & gathering wild herbs
on a guided herb hiking tour
We get many of the herbs and flowers we need from the farm garden. Seminar facilitator Gertrude Wastian is a
farmwoman and shows you how to find “wild herbs“ also on a meadow. She knows better than anyone else that
there is an herb for every taste and that “weed” is a matter of opinion.

plateau. Once arrived, you use the clapper of the bell there to acoustically announce your summit victory with a
chime. Enjoy the overwhelming view during a jause break at the summit. If you are one of the lucky ones taking
the tour in fair weather, you can see the waves of the Upper Adriatic Sea glistening in the distance when you look
              south.

Ü Mangart - Triglav National Park Slovenia
Today’s motto is “Off to the Triglav National Park – a gem in the Julian Alps in Slovenia“. This tour has
been a long-standing secret dream of many mountain enthusiasts. This mountain range is one of the most
                                                                                                                    11
fascinating regions in the Alps. Wild on one hand, charming on the other. Rugged peaks alternate with
flower-covered mountain slopes. Primal forests merging to idyllic alpine pastures. But there is more. This
wealth of pristine nature and culture make this region a paradise for mountain enthusiasts who prefer
seeing, discovering and hiking to any other kick. The Triglav National Park was founded for the sustainable
protection of the region in 1924 already and was extended to its current size of 838 km² in 1981. It is
     famous beyond Slovenia’s borders, it is very popular with visitors and offers a wide range of possibilities;
from a multitude of glacier lakes to one of the many well-known summits like the Mangart, a 2.579 m
high mountain at the border between Italy and Slovenia.
Alone the journey to the mountain is an adventure itself. We reach the starting point of the tour by
    taking Slovenia’s highest-situated mountain road - 12 km long, 17 bends, 5 tunnels.

12 Ü Reißkofel hiking tour
The Reißkofel is one of the most impressive mountains in the Gailtal Valley Alps and, with 2371 metres in
height, is also the highest elevation east of the Gailberg Saddle. From whichever direction in the valley you
look at this mighty limestone massif, it always looks different. Clearly visible from a far distance, this mountain –
also known as “King of the Gailtal Valley Alps” – simply dominates the scenery of the sur rounding valleys –
the Gailtal Valley, Gitschtal Valley and the Drava Valley where the Reißkofel’s rocky north face steeply drops
by almost 500 metres. Its pointy summit structure clearly distinguishes itself from the other mountain summits
even when viewed from the Lesachtal Valley further west. The ascent starting from the Jochalm requires a good level
of basic fitness, alpine experiences and a head for heights.
The fascination of the mountain is inevitably felt on the way uphill. Once arrived at the top, there is no
one who would not admit that all the effort was worthwhile.

Highest point: Mount Reisskofel 2.371 m

Ü Circular hiking route - Laghi di Fusine and Zacchi Hut
Only 11 km away from Tarvisio are the two beautiful alpine lakes Laghi di Fusine. The mighty north faces
of the Mangart Mountain Range reflect in the clear blue-green waters of the lakes. The Lower Lake
(Inferiore) and the northern part of the Upper Lake (Superiore) and the surroundings are a designated
nature reserve. A well-kept trail leads across some wood bridges around the charming lakes directly along
the shore in most parts. The Alpe Vecchia Trail leads us through mysterious forests and clearings, past a
massive arena of rocks to the Zacchi Hut.

Alpine huts
     in the Gailtal Valley Mountains
Take a break, unwind and enjoy
14 Whether as a couple or on a family holiday with children a stop at one of the huts in the Carnic Alps and the Gailtal Valley
Alps promises relaxation and rustic hut jamboree. Dishes are still prepared on a wood burner here and the water comes
from a well. Far away from hectic and everyday stress, entertainment on an alpine pasture can be enjoyed by candlelight
until late in the evening. The local alpine huts are ideal for overnight shelters on multi-day hiking tours, as starting points for
hiking tours in the Carnic Alps or the Gailtal Valley Alps or as a stop in between. A hearty jause with regional specialities like
Gailtal Valley Bacon or Gailtal Valley Alpine Cheese is waiting as refreshment after a summit victory.

     Our “Almbinkerle“
When a special panoramic site calls for an unplanned stop. When a summit victory must be celebrated with culinary
specialities at the mountain peak after walking for hours. When you want to show your loved ones at home that you were
thinking of them even at the most extraordinary places by bringing back the taste of the mountains as a souvenir. There are
many moments when an “Almbinkerle“ is just the right thing! The Gailtal Valley alpine pastures have packed a really great
selection of local specialities with this bundle of victuals. Apart from the original Gailtal Valley Alpine Cheese, the “Almbin-
kerle“ also contains bacon, sausages, bread and a ”Tschinkl“ (pocket knife) as well as a wooden plate. This bundle of speciali-
ties is available for € 13. Tip: The “Almbinkerle“ is also available as basic bundle (incl. wooden plate, Tschinkl and bag without
the fresh food specialities) for € 13 at selected hotels and at the Info & Servicecenter in Hermagor. This bundle includes a
voucher which you can redeem to fill your “binkerle“ with culinary treats on one of the listed alpine pastures.

     The alpine pasture breakfast
Real mountain experts know: The early hiker catches the most beautiful views. The early morning atmosphere is indeed
very special at the summit as well as on the alpine pastures of the Gailtal Valley. The first mountaineers return from their
sunrise hiking tour with the memories of the unparalleled panorama still on their mind when the first rays of sunshine
slowly appear, covering the mountains in a soft light. Others have laced their hiking boots and look forward to their summit
victory. Many others are simply looking for some distance to everyday life and find here the perfect place to enjoy the dis-
tant view, tranquillity and pleasant atmosphere. They all meet at the Gailtal Valley alpine pastures that offer an alpine pasture
breakfast as a culinary speciality. Gailtal Valley Alpine Cheese, fresh whey cheese, bacon, spreads, yogurt and many other deli-
cacies produced on the alpine pasture during summer are served on a wooden plate. The specialities taste especially good
here! The alpine farmers and farmwomen of the following alpine pastures serve their alpine pasture breakfast from 7.30 am
     – 11.00 am for individuals as well as for groups. Advance booking for individuals is not required.

Mountain Biking
The Gailtal Valley and surrounding region are home to the most dense network of of MTB trails and cycle paths
Th
iinn the whole of Carinthia. A total of 31 routes covering 730 km lead riders across the sunny south of Austria, 17
taking in a range of landscapes and valleys. Riders can dismount and explore the themed hiking trails nearby or,
alternatively, follow the rushing waters of the Gail river. Indeed, several rides can even be combined with a visit to
neighbouring Italy or a boat trip on the Weissensee lake

Experience something exciting
Ü The„Lift & Bike Giro“
The lower terminus of the Millennium Express in Tröpolach is the starting point for a unique mountain bike
adventure. Taking your bike on the modern cable car with you, the ascent to the upper terminus to the
Madritsche is easy. Once arrived at the top, there are 11.7 kilometres between you and the valley. The down
hill route leads mainly across gravel and requires quite a good level of physical fitness – especially in the area
of the upper arms. On the way through the Carnic Alps, you pass impressive rock formations and the region’s
typical flora and fauna. In fact, it is exactly the panorama that you were admiring in the valley before
     your ascent.
Note: Although the Lift & Bike Giro is not a downhill trail, it is not a route
                            recommended for children

BIKEworld of Mountain
Biker freedom without borders can be enjoyed in the BIKEworld of Mountains. Carnic Alps, Julian Alps and Gailtal Valley Alps
are stage and setting of this borderless BIKEworld – in Austria and Italy. Experience freedom without borders not only on
41 signposted MTB and bicycle routes and bike tours; our vision is to offer an exciting BIKEworld together with our Italian
18 friends. A world where all bikers feel happy: the touring bikers on the many MTB routes, the flow trail fans on the new “Surf
Line“ at the base of the Nassfeld in Tröpolach and the enduro bikers on the shaped trails, the ”lines“ on the Nassfeld around
the ”Madritsche“ – and 3 summer mountain railways which ensure a comfortable ascent if required. All this can be experien-
ced in the pleasant summer climate in the Southern Alps, with a refreshing swim in Lake Pressegger See and Lake Weissensee,
with waters of drinking water quality, as a bonus. Apropos Lake Weissensee: Just after the Nasssfeld-Pressegger See destinati-
on, there are the Weissensee Bike Trails – three cool “lines” at this fjord-like lake.

12 single trails, nine of them new, at Nassfeld as well as a new flow trail – the “Surf Line“ in Tröpolach – and three trails at
Lake Weissensee – the TRAILworld of Mountains grows constantly and development will also continue in future. All trails can
be reached via bike routes as well as with the comfortable summer mountain railways at Nassfeld (3 cable cars) and at Lake

Shaped Lines
Those shaped lines, created by machine and manpower, await with, for example, banked curves, wallrides, rollers / waves or a
scroll (spiral). There are no roots and stones. Depending on the level of difficulty, artificial obstacles like jumps may be part of
the line (Jump Line). The “flow“ takes centre stage here; rollercoaster feeling guaranteed – euphoric kicks included

Nature Line
This is a natural (mostly narrow) trail which is shared with hikers. Roots, stones and hairpin bends make this trail technically
challenging. You bike one behind the other almost all of the time, hence the term ”single trail“.

Pump Track 19
A designated practicing areal especially for beginners and kids. Such tracks are often not only for bikes but anything that mo-
ves on rolls. Using push movements across the wavy course, you try to gather speed. Once tried, you will want to do it again
and again! = Addiction potential.

Categories – Single trail scale
(see www.singletrail-skala.de)
The levels of difficulty are based on the biking skills of an average biker with a technically suitable mountain bike. The single
trail scale is divided into three levels of difficulty: EASY, INTERMEDIATE and DIFFICULT. The scale is open-end and is limited
to the technical difficulty of a flat or steep downhill trail. Please note that the “EASY“ level already requires sporty biking
skills!

S0 EASY
Single trails without any special levels of difficulty. Mostly flowy forest and meadow trails on non-slip ground with hardened
gravel. Terraces, rocks or root passages are highly unlikely. Easy to moderate gradient with wide curves.

S1 EASY
Some lose ground, small roots and stones, small obstacles, a few water channels and erosion damages. Gradient of up to 40%
max. No hairpin bends. Rolling over obstacles still possible.

S2 INTERMEDIATE
Hardly any hardened ground; larger roots and stones as well as obstacles, flat terraces and ledges. Gradient of up to 70 %
max. Narrow curves and hairpin bends possible. Advanced biking technique required.

S3 DIFFICULT
Interlocked single trails. Many larger boulders and/or root passages. High ledges, hairpin bends with sometimes difficult
sloping surfaces. Often with lose coarse gravel or slippery ground. Gradients of over 70% not rare.Very good biking skills
required.

S4 DIFFICULT
Very steep and heavily interlocked single trails with large boulders and/or challenging root passages. Often lose coarse gravel
in between. Many high terraces, extremely steep ramps, narrow hairpin bends and tiers where the chain ring may bottom out.
Excellent special trail technique skills are an absolute must!

One of the main advantages of electric bikes is that it opens up cycling to many people who used to be reluctant
to get on a bike, with the small electric motor making even relatively steep climbs easy to overcome. Rides that
seem too far away on a normal bike are suddenly no problem on an e-bike. But don‘t just take our word for

Kids adventures with
     the Nassfeld legends
24 Kids adventure world
Here is fun on the agenda!
The journey is the reward! With this in mind, time flies by and the distance walked is quickly forgotten.
The new adventure programmes in the mountains and at the lake will get even your children interested in hiking!
Because the playgrounds around the “Pramollo Wild Bunch“, the “Lake Witch“ and the “Almrausch“ are close to
nature and ready for young adventurers. The play equipment made from natural materials will not only delight
your children. The animals at the petting zoo on the Treßdorfer Alm also look forward to a visit and a bit
of tender loving care! Young adventurers and explorers will learn a lot of new things about nature at the Geopark.
     Variety is guaranteed!

“In the Realm of the Wild Bunch“ adventure mile
     Following the smugglers‘ trail
Visitors of all ages solve tasks along the smugglers‘ trail to bring the stories around the “Pramollo Wild Bunch“ with
a Happy End. Based on a comic book with Fix & Foxi, a mixed bunch of people secretly smuggle goods from Pontebba
(IT) to Hermagor. Diverse activity stations also invite to re-enact part of the adventure story at original locations.

The adventure mile leads from the lower terminus of the Madritschen chairlift toward Italy and is also a new
route connecting the centre of Nassfeld and the state border.

The circular obstacle course consists of five stations:
the “Smugglers Hideout“, the climbing tower “Smugglers Castle“ and the “Castle Kitchen“ where children can play,
bake and cook, all are connected by a ”Supplies Carriage“ for the trans¬port of smuggled goods. A 20 m long rope
slide serves as “Escape Route“. 14 Kids adventures with the Nassfeld legends:

In the Realm of the Lake Witch
Adventure Area at the Pressegger See
According to the story, the “Lake Witch”, a mythical creature, lives in the vast reed belt of Lake Pressegger See.
She is constantly on the look-out for trouser buttons, coins and small toys for her to take them deep down
into the waters of Lake Pressegger See. All these treasures provide her with a magical power that she uses to
make the waters of Lake Pressegger See so pleasantly warm.
The 2.400 m2 of the theme playground is the habitat of the Lake Witch. Wherever you look there is something
exciting to see. The huge Lake Witch eerily mixes a potion while being watched by a giant snake, a dragonfly and
a water spider that invites to climbing around. There are also reed manikins and other comic figures, teaching
children about the nature of the lake in a playful way. The key points are spaces for activities close to nature and
novel pieces and elements for children to play with.

Grass Maze at Lake Pressegger See
Venture into the Grass Maze! The maze is in the Realm of the Lake Witch, a mean-spirited character, which
can be encountered in the adventure playground. Exciting play and adventure stations also await along a diverse
circular trail around Lake Pressegger See. Apart from playful adventures, you will also learn interesting facts about
this fascinating lake and its neighbouring moor landscape here.
The trail leads right through the western and eastern reed belt of the lake. Carinthia’s largest connected reed
bed is a fascinating habitat for many rare faunal and floral species.
A walk along the circular lake trail is especially suitable for families and children from age 5.The lidos in Hermagor
and Preseggen are ideal starting points; both lidos offer ample parking. Several rest areas and restaurants along
the way invite to stop and stay a while.
