On marine applications, the BioBarrier® MarineMBR™ helps to meet the increasingly
stringent needs of water quality standards, Coast Guard and IMO, and ideal for water reuse
applications.
How it works
To assure consistent effluent quality, the BioBarrier® MarineMBR™
(land‐based version was the first system certified for water reuse
(NSF/ANSI Std 350, class R) for total blackwater and greywater
recycling onboard a vessel adheres to strict water quality guidelines.
Each system operates automatically and is controlled by a three level
float switch and timing relays in the control cabinet
How it installs
BioBarrier® membrane bioreactors are engineered to treat all
sources of blackwater and greywater in varying strengths and
dependent on daily wastewater flow. The Scienco/FAST® custom
MarineMBR™ steel tank provides access for maintenance and
removal of the membranes for deep cleaning or replacement. As
well as the maintenance on the filtrate pumps and easy to access
blower(s), while keeping as much of the equipment below deck and
out of sight. All penetrations for air lines, filtrate outflow and electric
cables are installed below the main deck. A submersible pump is
mounted on the membrane module housing and used as the filtrate
pump.

Thanks to a powerful biological process (aerobic digestion) and ultrafiltration (to 0.03 micron), these

Reliability and durability

its small footprint, the variation in crew size and overloads, the robust MarineMBR ™ treatment process
offers consistent performance making the innovative and patented BioBarrier® MarineMBR ™ system a
system at the cutting edge of technology and extraordinary reliability.
Touch screen and smart controller
Thanks to its new software and its ultra-modern touch screen
specially developed for the MarineMBR ™ the system is self-
regulating and no adjustment is required. Combined with high-
efficiency regenerative aerators, the integrated intelligent
controller automates the operation and performance of the
system to always have the best performance with reduced
power consumption.
Overloads during receptions, parties, temporary changes in crew size, or shift changes do not affect the
quality of the effluents. The performance of the MarineMBR ™ does not depend on the skills of the
operator.
Respect for the environment and preservation of water resources
MarineMBR ™ is specially suited for water reuse applications. First system in the world certified NSF /
ANSI 350 for the reuse of water, it allows to recycle it for new innovative uses on board and thus extend
the autonomy of the ship (for example, flushing of toilets, irrigation, washing, fountains , make-up
water, etc.). It thus reduces the consumption of drinking water by more than 40% on average!
If the water is not intended to be reused, the quality of treatment of this allows a release into the
environment, without risk, even improving the quality of the water of the receiving environments, thus
participating in the preservation of biodiversity and the environment.

certification tests with the U.S. Coast Guard and
responds to USCG 33CFR159 and MEPC.227 (64)

Innovation: Water reuse, unequaled quality and new
perspectives
To ensure consistent effluent quality, the BioBarrier® MarineMBR ™ (land based version) was the
first system in the world certified for water reuse (NSF / ANSI Std 350, class R), thus allowing total
recycling of black water. and gray water aboard a ship while meeting the highest standards in terms
of water quality (it has been proven to be able to eliminate fecal coliforms, E. coli and other agents
pathogens present in gray and black waters).

1 - In the primary settling zone, a SaniTEE®
device is used to prevent large solids from
entering the treatment zone.
2 - A remote, above-ground blower
introduces air (oxygen) into the treatment
module to facilitate a robust circulation and
aeration of wastewater. The system
ensures sufficient oxygen transfer
necessary for optimal biological treatment.
This active ventilation is essential in the
treatment process.
3 - Once inside the treatment tank,
suspended treatment occurs. Optional
LIXOR® System can be used for extra
aeration for higher than normal BOD
concentrations.
4 - Immersed in the treatment tank, the BioBarrier® module(s) and air grid(s) create an upward flow between
membrane plates providing vigorous scouring action. This ensures robust and superior performance.
5 - The pore size of the membranes (0.03 micron) is specially studied to allow a microfiltration and ultrafiltration
process allowing to retain chemical and microbiological contaminants present in water.
6 - The filtration pump extracts treated, clear water that is free of odors, viruses or bacteria; ready for reuse in
various innovative applications.

Development history
In July of 2018, the first discussions of providing the BioMicrobics® proven and certified BioBarrier®
MBR System for marine applications and send the prototype documents to the USCG for Certification
prior to the shock, vibe, and process testing procedures.
The next few months were busy with designing the system based on decades of marine engineering
know‐how with the successful and popular Scienco/FAST® MarineFAST® wastewater treatment
systems. MarineFAST® systems, recognized for their quality, reliability and many times proven.
Scienco/FAST® received the "Offshore Excellence Award" for its innovation in marine environmental
technologies.
The water process engineers and designers at BioMicrobics® were called upon to give guidance to the
layout, installation and future operation and maintenance of the system. What was very evident from
the start was a new software program was needed for a state‐of the‐art touch screen and smart
controller to help automate the operation and performance of the system.

The BioBarrier® MarineMBR™ utilizes immersed, aerated, membrane technology which allows for
installation into a smaller footprint of a custom‐designed certified tank. The BioBarrier® MBR product
line provides systems from 250 GPD [1000 l/d] to 100,000+ GPD [400 000 l/d] flows, meet water quality
requirements for the reduction of chemical and microbiological contaminants for non‐potable water
use. The treated wastewater (i.e. high‐quality effluent) can be used for restricted and/or unrestricted
water use*.
