4Barclay Manor
Anthony Kupferschmidt
Executive Director
The new year is bringing changes to WESN.
I will begin by wishing farewell to two members
of our staff team. Sadly, both Ming Chen and
Suzanne Klassen will be leaving this month for
wonderful new positions. Ming is taking a job
with the Red Cross, and Suzanne has accepted
a position with the Alzheimer Society of BC. I
will miss them both greatly, and I am sure
many of you will as well. Please join me in
wishing them both the best of luck.
In the short term, we will be short staffed but bringing on some new faces temporarily to help
during this transition period. We will do our best to continue to support all of our members,
clients and volunteers, and in turn I would ask you all to be patient while we work to bring
Barclay Manor back up to full capacity.
With the departure of Ming and Suzanne, we are taking this opportunity to review our
organizational structure and make some needed and overdue changes. For example, the
demands on the person in the role of Manager of Volunteer Resources and Community Services
are too great. Too often the Life Unlimited services that this position oversees take so much
time that volunteer recruitment, orientation and training for our whole organization do not get
the attention they need. With a reliance on over 260 volunteers to help deliver almost all of our
programs and services, we need to ensure that we meet both our client and volunteer needs
well.
Secondly, the distinction between our Better at Home and Life Unlimited services is an arbitrary
one. Suzanne and Ming share many mutual clients, and coordinating both light housekeeping
and grocery shopping and delivery for the same client would be easier without the divide
between these services.
I am happy to tell you that we will be replacing these two full-time roles with three full-time
positions to increase our capacity. We will be combining Better at Home and Life Unlimited
services into Community Services so they are more streamlined, and creating another full-time
role more dedicated to volunteer recruitment, orientation and training.
An organization of our size sometimes has challenges keeping great employees. Thankfully, we
are growing.
We are hiring:
• Manager of Community Services
• Community Services Coordinator
• Manager of Membership and Volunteers

5Barclay Manor
Kaitlin Hong Tai
Manager of Programs
A new year, a new newsletter look! For this month, I have added a summary schedule for our
weekly programs (P. 13) and a monthly calendar for non-weekly programs, events, workshops,
and presentations (PP. 14-15). These pages are intended to help display what is taking place at
Barclay Manor. They are included in this issue as a trial.
The Barclay Manor programs are now organized by type (PP. 16-22), which is similar to how
other community and recreation centres organize their guides. It should be easy to find
programs suited to your interests with this form of categorization.
There are a couple of new programs starting in January. These include a Craft Circle where
you can either work on your own craft project or learn how to make crepe paper flowers from
our volunteer instructor (P. 16), Limber Up Stretching to help you maintain or improve your
flexibility (P. 16), Italian Stories to practice your comprehension and listening skills (P. 17), and
Happy Hour Hoppers to enjoy a drink and food while socializing with peers (P. 19).
I am not a graphic designer, so the general layout of the newsletter, such as heading styles and
tables, may change in the coming months. If you had a career in or have experience in graphic
design - particularly with Adobe InDesign - I welcome tips or suggestions! Email is the best way
to connect with me for this: programs@wesn.ca.
Take some time to familiarize yourself with the updated newsletter format!
Clothes and Collectibles
Laura Fee
Manager
Welcome to a New Year! We hope your holiday was enjoyable. We’ve got lots of plans for
another exciting year at our thrift boutique.
Did you hear the recent news from the City of Vancouver? As part of their single-use item
reduction strategy, the City announced a ban on plastic and compostable plastic shopping bags.
Paper bags will have to have at least 40% recycled content, with a minimum charge attached.
These will both come into effect on January 1, 2021.
Although the ban is a year away, we all need to change our expectations. The day will come
(no date determined as of yet) when we won’t have plastic or paper shopping bags for your
purchase. When we have them in stock, we will continue to have reusable shopping bags
available with purchase, and we hope to have some for sale in the near future. Many of you are
already in the habit of bringing your own reusable shopping bag and we really appreciate it. On
a similar note, please don’t bring us paper grocery bags, as we cannot recycle them.
Thanks for all you’re doing to reduce the stress on our planet.
6Kay’s Place
Veronica Page and Susan Paré
Managers of Support and Information Services
Happy New Year from us all at Kay’s Place!
Last month in our article we talked about listening to your questions around health concerns.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete our first survey on oral health.

medically necessary eye exams for everyone, regardless of age
Our second survey is concerning optical health, and can be accessed in one of the following
ways:
Please see the next page of this newsletter (P. 8) for the survey. You can complete it and drop
it off in the boxes provided at Barclay Manor and Kay’s Place. You can also find paper copies at
