LEARNING THAT LASTS Course Guide 2021 - Stockton Council
Welcome to Stockton
Learning and Skills Service
The last year has been challenging for many people but we are
here to support you whether you want to learn a new skill, meet
new people, get a new job, improve your health and wellbeing, start
volunteering or set up your own business. Whatever your situation
we have a range of courses which will help you.

Safe Learning
Although we have had to temporarily close our doors, many of our learners have continued
with their studies online in new and innovative ways. These courses have been so successful
that we are increasing the range of our online offer. We are also adapting some of the courses
that would traditionally be delivered in the classroom to include some distance learning that
you can do at a place and time convenient for you. You will see within this guide that all of
our courses include ‘remote learning’, this means that we will support you to work remotely
during these national restrictions. You will be fully supported to
complete your learning programme and achieve any qualifications
which you may have already started. We are committed to offering
a safe learning environment for our learners and staff so you can
be reassured that our learning venues when opened will meet
government and health and safety requirements.

Careers, Advice and Guidance
Stockton Learning and Skills Service holds the Matrix standard.
This is the quality standard which measures the provision given
to support you in your choice of career, learning, work and life
goals. We want all of our learners to be successful in their own right
whichever area of learning they choose to study. Every learner
studying with us will be eligible for a personal session where they
will be given information, advice and guidance on the course they
are taking part in. The session will also help identify where you can
progress in the future and you will be given a personalised career
plan to help you achieve your career aspirations.
For this year we will also be offering online sessions where possible.
As part of our careers support offer, all learners are entitled to have:
• Courses and training programmes designed to
  support your development
• Personalised life and career plans to support
   your goals
• Impartial information, advice and guidance
• Access to employment initiatives with dedicated 1:1 support
If you need extra help in any of our classes we
can discuss your needs and agree a support plan.
Financial support for childcare, transport or
additional costs may be available on some courses.

LEARNING FOR WORK
We offer a wide range of free courses that support individual
learners to get into work. We also offer courses that will help you to

Case Study
Roula Kheder Alsheikh is a Syrian refugee who joined the Stockton
Learning and Skills Service Level 2 Community Interpreting course
hoping it would give her the right skills to find employment.
The Community Interpreting course enables speakers of other languages
to develop the language and skills necessary to work or volunteer as
Interpreters in the Community. Learners are also encouraged to volunteer
with local organisations to practice their skills and gain hands on
experience.
Roula said: “Our tutor Alison encouraged
us to volunteer to help grow our confidence
and skills. She told us about a volunteer
opportunity at a charity called Happy Baby
Community Support which works with
isolated individuals. I took up the opportunity
to volunteer and I was able to use my skills
and knowledge in real life situations.”
Roula now lives in London and works as
a Volunteer Coordinator at Happy Baby
Community. She added: “The Community
Interpreting course really gave me a platform
to be able to use my language skills to help
people in the Community and I now have a job
that I love.”

Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a great way to gain the skills, knowledge and
experience you need to get into many careers. They combine work,
training and study, allowing you to ‘earn while you learn’.
There are many different apprenticeships available across a wide
range of industries and for a wide variety of job roles. As a paid
employee, apprentices develop workbased skills alongside their
studies. There are no student fees - your training costs are funded by
the government and your employer.
It’s an ideal option if you have a clear idea of the career path you
want to follow, providing you with practical, on-the-job training
alongside classroom-based learning.
You will receive valuable hands-on experience working whilst you
learn, which helps you progress in your working life and is a great
option for getting on the job ladder or supercharging your career.
An apprenticeship can also be a cost-effective and beneficial
approach to upskill within your current role if you are already
employed to support your professional development and future
career opportunities.
Here at Stockton Learning and Skills Service we work with
a wide range of employers and are pleased to offer apprenticeships
from Level 2 up to Level 5 in the following areas:

• Business Administration
• Customer Service
• Team Leading
• Management and Leadership
• Early Years
• Children, Young People and Families
• Adult Care Worker
