2. Embracing the life-course approach and active ageing
!
Both!Councils!are!focused!on!providing!a!supportive!environment!for!health!across!
all!age!groups.!‘Health!is!not!a!‘point!in!time’,!but!rather!the!accumulation!of!many!
circumstances,!choices!and!events!that!have!occurred!in!the!life!of!an!individual’.!9!
The!Cities!of!Unley!and!Mitcham!acknowledge!the!important!contribution!of!older!
residents!to!the!community.!The!population!of!the!region!is!ageing!and!there!is!a!
higher!proportion!of!people!aged!65!plus!years,!when!compared!to!the!metropolitan!
average.!Both!Council!areas!have!a!higher!proportion!of!residents!aged!80!years!and!
over!compared!with!metropolitan!Adelaide.!A!vast!majority!of!people!in!this!age!
group!live!healthy!and!active!lives!and!this!can!be!supported!through!social!and!
physical!infrastructure.!!
