                  MISSION STATEMENT
                                                               3
The Deptford Township Public Schools, in cooperation with students, parents, and community
members, will strive to provide all students with the intellectual, cultural, and technological
resources and opportunities necessary to become contributing members of our democratic
society.

It is our mission to focus on high academic achievement and social competency for all of our
students. Our students will be best served by high expectations, by curricula which go beyond
basic skills, and programs which use instructional time to engage students in problem-solving,
critical thinking, and active learning.

In addition, it is our aim to establish a safe educational setting reflecting a cooperative team
approach, while at the same time allowing for independent thought and growth. Our students
should be encouraged to take intellectual risks in an environment which encourages intellectual
exploration, creative thinking, and an open exchange of ideas.

Students are guided in developing their own personal value systems. They are taught to
appreciate and accept responsibility for themselves. Each student will develop a positive self-
image by being provided with opportunities for personal growth and achievement.

The curriculum of the Deptford Township School District is aligned to the State core
curriculum content standards: Visual and Performing Arts, Comprehensive Health and Physical
Education, Language Arts Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, World Languages,
Technological Literacy, Career Education and Consumer, Family, and Life Skills. The Deptford
Township School District is committed to the implementation of these standards for all our
students. It is necessary that we use all available resources to maximize achievement across all
content areas. It is our goal that all our pupils become contributing members of our global society.

                                      Our Mission

Just as a bridge offers support and transition, Middle School guides students in their
development and growth. As a school community, we are clearly focused on engaging
the students in the following core areas:
   ● Providing a dynamic and challenging curriculum with an emphasis on higher-order
       thinking skills
   ● Promoting and maintaining a peaceful and respectful atmosphere that encourages
       responsibility for one’s actions
   ● Developing self-confidence and an influential voice that is expressed and heard in
       a safe environment
   ● Fostering participation in, and service to, the democratic society in which we live
The scaffolding of the dedicated community members, parents, and staff helps to sustain
the weight of the bridge that braces our students’ future.

                                                                                       5

                                  Change of Advanced Course Policy

If there is a legitimate reason for a student to change one’s class schedule, he/she must first see their
counselor. Entering or exiting an advanced course must be done according to the following schedule:

Last day to enter an advanced course: 10th day of the first marking period
Last day to drop an advanced course: first interim date

*Please note that students are chosen for advanced courses based off of an order of merit list. There are a
limited number of seats in each of these courses. Students may only be added to a course provided there
are available seats in that particular course.*

                                       Personalized Learning Period

read their novel, make up work, or receive extra help. Everyone will be expected to be productive

period unless otherwise given permission. Electronic devices are not allowed unless students are given
permission to use them for academic/educational purposes. Passes are required to leave assigned PLP
and receive help elsewhere.

                                                  AVID

AVID is a national and worldwide educational program whose mission is to close the achievement gap
by providing students in the middle the necessary supports and strategies to prepare all of them for
college readiness and success in our global society. AVID – Advancement Via Individual
Determination www.avid.org.

The AVID elective class prepares selected students for four-year college eligibility. AVID has a proven
track record in bringing out the best in students and in closing the achievement gap by preparing all
students for college readiness and success in a global society. The AVID program supports these students
attending Deptford Township High School who want to go to college. Selected students are placed in (pre-
AP/AP) classes with an AVID elective class to support them during the school day. Additional support
from the AVID site team and tutoring by college students is provided.

The AVID Program targets eligible students who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to
work hard. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-
income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them
on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. AVID is designed to put eligible students in
upper level courses on a college track.

The AVID Elective Student – not only are students enrolled in their school's toughest classes, such as
advanced, honors and Advanced Placement, but also in the AVID elective. For one period a day, they
learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic
help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make
college more attainable. Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders
and role models for other students.

Eligible students wishing to participate in AVID will be required to go through a recruitment process as
outlined by AVID. Students will be notified of their eligibility and be asked to attend a meeting outlining
the criteria for the selection process. Students will complete the necessary requirements for recruitment
and once the recruitment process has been completed they will receive a letter identifying if they have or
have not been accepted into the AVID program.

This is a selective process.

                                     10
The seventh grade English Language Arts curriculum at MMS is a comprehensive and rigorous program
of instruction in a double period that incorporates selections from various texts. The goal is to integrate reading,
writing, speaking, and listening into daily experiences in the classroom that will foster student growth and self-
confidence. Through selected readings, students will recognize and appreciate fiction, historical fiction, and non-
fiction as literary genres. They will apply reading skills including, but not limited to, context clues, prediction,
making inferences, and determining an author’s purpose. A novel study is done each marking period to reinforce
these skills and provide independent reading practice and group discussion. In addition, students will write for a
variety of audiences and purposes, which include narrative, research simulation, and literary analysis essays. The
art of poetry as a means of expression is also explored. Daily vocabulary and grammar practice will enhance
written and oral communication as well as listening skills. Students will also focus on 21st century skills which

team concept of sports; and (2) to create an interest to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

Physical Education – Grade 8
The students will be introduced to a number of team sports; the development of individual skills and
techniques of these sport activities will be emphasized. The purpose of the activities will be to develop skills with
the hope of creating interest in team sports and lifelong fitness, i.e. allowing the students to realize any potential
they may have for any particular sport or to realize their individual desire to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.
Student evaluation is based primarily on class preparation as well as participation, performance tests, and written
tests.

Health – Grade 7
The 7th grade health curriculum focuses on physical, mental, and social health. Physical health topics
