                                Cupid vs Eros….
Cupid, a naked baby with wings, a bow and arrow, and the powers to make people fall
in love, just might be the most perplexing holiday symbol we have! However Valen-
tines Day would not be complete without him! Cupid is the most recognized symbol of
love.
It is said to have all started with Eros, Cupid's Greek counterpart. Eros was the Greek
god of love, fertility, and passion. The son of Aphrodite in Greek mythology but in Ro-
man mythology he is the son of Venus. By some myths he was considered
a primordial god, a child of Chaos, who blessed the union of Gaia and Uranus after
which the universe came into existence. If we were to follow Greek mythology then
Eros was a disobedient but fiercely loyal child of Aphrodite. He was armed with golden
arrows to inspire love and leaden arrows to inspire hate. He was known to treat the
mortals of Greece like his playthings, magically inciting conflicts and unions for his
own amusement. It was he who lit the flame of love in the hearts of the gods and
men.
One of the most prevalent myths in ancient Greece was that of Eros and Psyche.
Psyche was the goddess of the soul. She was so beautiful that even Aphrodite was
jealous of her! Due to this jealousy Aphrodite commanded her son Eros to
make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest creature on earth. What she didn't know was
that Eros was deeply in love with her. He took her to his palace and forbad her to look
at him in the face. He only went to visit her at night. Unfortunately for Psyche, Aphro-
dite was not the only one jealous of her. Her jealous sisters tricked her into disobeying
him and she betrayed Eros. During one of his nightly visits she lit a lamp so she could
see him. Once he saw this he became so enraged he left her! She was so distraught
she wandered the Earth looking for her lost love. She finally got the courage to ap-
proached Aphrodite for help. Aphrodite created a series of almost impossible tasks
for Psyche which lead her in a journey to the underworld. Psyche successfully passed
each of these tasks so Aphrodite decided to truly help her. The gods then
made Psyche immortal. She was able to reunite with Eros and the couple were mar-
ried in a ceremony attended by all the gods. They eventually had a daughter who they
named Hedone (meaning bliss).

Now, Cupid does have a striking resemblance to Eros, however where Eros could
cause drama and chaos, Cupid only inspired love and romance. As well Eros, while
very handsome, was much older than what cupid is portrayed to be. Maybe Cupid is
Eros as a child, before he found rebellion?

                                       Grandmas Apron
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because it
was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material. It served as a
potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for clean-
ing out dirty ears…
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and
sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture
that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the
porch, waved her apron, and everyone knew it was time
to come in for dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something
that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many
purposes.
I never caught anything from an apron…But Love.

Some facts you probably didn’t know about Groundhog Day:
1. Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 97 times, has not seen it 15 times, and
nine years are unaccounted for. Yes, Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather fore-
casting groundhog. The others are just imposters.
2. No, Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts are not made in advance by the Inner Circle. Af-
ter Phil emerges from his burrow on February 2nd, he speaks to the Groundhog Club
President in Groundhogese. His proclamation is then translated for the world.
3. The National Climatic Data Center reportedly stated that Phil’s prediction’s have
been correct 39 percent of the time. This number is in conflict with Phil’s club, which
states he’s been right 100 percent of the time.
4. There’s a legend that during Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of
winter on the community if he wasn’t allowed a drink.
5. In the years following the release of Groundhog Day, a 1993 film starring Bill
Murray, crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have visited Gobbler’s Knob, a tiny hill
in Punxsutawney where the ceremony takes place.
6. There has been only one Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity
from drinking "groundhog punch" (a secret recipe). One sip, which is administered
every summer at the Groundhog Picnic, gives him seven more years of life. Punxsu-
tawney Phil is at least 131 years old!
7. On February 2nd, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler's Knob, in front of thou-
sands of faithful followers from all over the world, to predict the weather for the rest of
the winter.
8. The celebration of Groundhog Day began with the Germans, Pennsylvania's earli-
est settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states "For
as the sun shines on Candlemas day, so far will the snow swirl in May...". The settlers
found that groundhogs were plentiful and were the most intelligent and sensible ani-
mal to carry on the legend of Candlemas Day.
And…..Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800's. The first official trek
to Gobbler's Knob made on February 2nd, 1887.
