Oldham Care Organisation
F11 Haematology Ward team learn more about aplastic anaemia
Staff from the F11 Haematology Ward at Oldham Care Organisation have been receiving some specialist
training on the subject of aplastic anaemia, a relatively rare and serious blood disorder that can affect the
body's ability to create new blood cells.
Aplastic anaemia is a rare and serious blood disorder caused by the bone marrow not functioning
properly, meaning patients' bodies are unable to create new cells and tissue cannot grow or regenerate. In
people with aplastic anaemia, the bone marrow fails to produce enough of all three types of blood cells –
red, white and platelets.
Red blood cells are essential for carrying oxygen around the body
White blood cells help us fight infections, bugs and germs
Platelets are responsible for stopping us bleeding and bruising.
Aplastic Anaemia can affect anyone of any age but is most common in the young (10 to 20 years old) and
elderly (60 years old +). It is estimated that between 100 and 150 people will be diagnosed in England
alone every year. That's around 2 people for every 1,000,000 of population, making it a very rare disease.
The haematology ward at Oldham provides treatment to patients with this condition and
these patients often receive the same treatment as cancer patients. With it being a relatively rare condition
to treat, ward staff were offered the opportunity undertake some specialist training to find out more about
the condition, its causes, symptoms and the treatment options available.
The session was delivered by Simon Slade, Clinical Nurse Specialist from King's College Hospital in
London and Grazina Berry, Chief Executive of The Aplastic Anaemia Trust, who provided an informative
session for haematology staff with interactive presentations and general discussion.
For more information on aplastic anaemia, please visit the aplastic anaemia trust website

Oldham Care Organisation hosted its first patient experience summit on
24th October and the event looked at how we can put patients at the heart
of all we do.
The emphasis of the day was to launch the NCA ‘Plan on a Page’
Experience Plan and speakers from different strands of the Northern Care
Alliance (NCA) came together to discuss their role and speciality, and how
this influences patient experience.
The highlight of the day was a presentation from a family and service user,
who came to present their personal experiences of care at the Oldham
Care Organisation. Eric was a patient that was recently discharged from
F11 in early October. He was very unwell and during his stay in hospital he
was a patient in A&E, AMU, Critical Care and F11. Eric’s daughter, Gillian
Hindle presented his story to a packed room of over 50 attendees at the
summit. Gillian described his care as 'above and beyond' and felt that
without the care and compassion shown by the clinical staff, her father
wouldn’t have made a full recovery. She personally thanked all the staff
involved in her father’s care; from the porters, housekeepers and health
care support staff to the nurses and doctors.
Joanne McAllister, Head of Service User/ Patient Experience, said: "The
Summit was a resounding success. There is a huge appetite at the care
organisation to listen to service user voice and feedback to drive forth
quality improvement."

Completion of documentation pertaining to deceased patients
We would like to remind all medical staff of the process and coronial expectations in completing
documentation pertaining to deceased patients.
Cremation and Removal of Pacemaker Authorisation Forms must not be completed until a decision has
been communicated by the Coroner. The prospective completion of such forms (prior to a decision being
made by the Coroner) incurs a risk that the patient may have a pacemaker removed, be released, buried,

On Care Opinion: I was urgently referred to Gynae due to post menopausal bleeding. Tests
showed I had a uterine polyp which needed urgent removal. This was a problem as my husbandwas also due for admission to hospital for cancer treatment. I explained this and whilst they could
not promise an asap date they would try their best and they did better than that by offering me a
cancellation 3 days later. I was so grateful not only for the prompt action but for the relief I felt
knowing I could then focus on my husband. To add to this the day surgery unit were amazing too.
Nursing care was excellent, every aspect was checked and rechecked at every step of the process
through to anaesthetists and doctors. I felt completely safe, informed and relaxed. Thank you to
the Gynae and day surgery unit. You are amazing."

On Care Opinion: "I went to the Bury Integrated MSK Service department. the whole system was
brilliant. I didn't have to wait long for my referral letter, or when I arrived. Despite problems with
traffic & parking, they made me feel comfortable & at ease. Treatment - they made me feel that
they cared about me and my problem and nothing was too much trouble. I wasn't rushed. They
listened to what I had to say. Everything was explained in a manner I could understand. I felt I was
special to them. Thank you so much."
On Care Opinion: "I was seen by a member of staff who explained in great detail the problems that
I was having. I will be receiving physio over the next 2 or 3 months and hopefully my symptoms
will be resolved. I enjoyed the visit and she made me feel very at ease during the assessment. Top
service by the NHS."

On Care Opinion: "My son visited A&E with a back injury and he was in for most of the day. The
care he received from the staff there was first class. They remained helpful and professional
during what was a very busy day. One nurse in particular was amazing. Nothing was too much
trouble and she was both efficient & knowledgeable when questions were asked. She is a credit to
the service."
On Twitter: "I can’t praise the staff at the Royal Oldham Hospital enough after today’s visit. I hate
to imagine what it would’ve been like to worry about the cost of treatment on top of everything
else."

North Manchester Care Organisation
On Care Opinion: "I saw a member of staff today in Outpatient physio A (self-referral
physiotherapy), he was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and kind. He reassured me about the
way I had managed my ankle injury which was what I needed. I didn't need to wait to be seen and
automatically got an appointment to fit around my work schedule in 3 weeks time. Thank you!"
On Care Opinion: "I have struggled for years with incontinence following a hysterectomy and
thought that I would have no option but to use women's pads for life. I thought I would try one last
time to get help, and I did, she is an amazing dedicated empathic young woman who quite literally
has changed my life, she has given me the belief that it isn't ‘normal’ and that it is not something
women have to ‘put up with’. The team of physios at North Manchester General hospital are an
exceptional group of people and all deserve praise. In the case of this member of staff, they must
make sure they keep her as she is worth her weight in gold, and I can't praise her enough. She
has made me be the confident person I used to be."
