Dear Parents & Carers,
Firstly I’d like to thank you all for your continuing
support over what has been a challenging time for all of
us … in school and at home.
The summer break is nearly upon us and I need to share with you our
considered plans for opening in September.
Whilst the government have said many Covid restrictions will be lifted or
relaxed from Monday 19th July, the school governors and I have decided a
more cautious approach would be wise. I explain our plans in the following
pages.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the whole school staff, whatever
their role, for working so fantastically as a team over the past year. I must
also mention your children. They returned on March 8th 2021, after the
second lockdown, so positively and ready to carry on their learning. They
settled back into school as if they’d never been away. We have been very
proud of their attitude to school and their resilience.
I need also to publicly thank my deputy, Mrs Rayner, who led the school
through the Covid pandemic as Acting Headteacher, whilst I was on
maternity leave. This is not something any head teacher is trained to do,
but Mrs Rayner led St Matthew’s through it with commitment,
professionalism, thoroughness and dedicating hours and hours of time to
get it as right as possible for all our children, families and staff. She taught
me when I returned and I will be forever indebted to her for the brilliant job
she did.
As you know in September I will be joined by Ms Diane Thompson as
Co-headteacher at St Matthew’s, and I know she is looking forward to
working here and meeting our school community.
When the summer break arrives, please enjoy spending time with your
children and we look forward to welcoming you all back safely in
September.

We have decided for now to keep our current start and
finish times to reduce congestion and maintain social

Road Crossing Patrol
You will have seen Mick, our new
crossing patrol person, outside our
main entrance on Havelock Road.
It is Mick’s job to stop traffic so that
the road can be crossed safely at
the start and end of the school day.
In September, Mick will be giving
out wristbands to every child who
crosses with him, which can be
enchanged for a reward sticker for
crossing safely with Mick.
PLEASE USE HIM!!
OFSTED
You already know that we had a monitoring visit from OFSTED
in May. We hope you have had a chance to read the letter we
received from the Lead Inspector who reported that she was
happy with the work we are doing in readiness for our next full
inspection. This is likely to be sometime in the academic year
2021/22.Governors
We welcome Mrs Tina Edwards, one of our former Assistant
Heads, back to St Matthew’s as a school governor along with
Mr Sam Mostyn-Willis who is our new local authority
nominated governor, who replaces the former councillor, Mark
Rivers, who has relocated to Scotland. Miss McBarron has
stepped down from her role has staff governor and has been
replaced by Miss Ninarh Dhanoa.
In September, we will be looking for another parent
governor, so if you would like to make a contribution to the
leadership of the school and/or have professional skills or
knowledge to lend us, please do think about putting yourself
forward by emailing Dee Davie, our Clerk to Governors, at
ddavie@smps.uk.
Welcome!
New Staff, New Roles
We welcome Mr Dave Farmer as Premises Manager to St
Matthew’s to replace Mr Evans who took up a new site
management role at a school in Leighton Buzzard in May.
Mrs Liz Plane joins us after the summer holiday to be the
Year 1 Team Leader and class teacher for Rabbit Class.
Both Miss Ninarh Dhanoa and Mr Iain Patterson will be
working as Acting Year Group Leaders from September. Mr
Patterson will be leading Year 3 and Miss Dhanoa will be
leading Year 4.
Last week, we appointed three Apprentices to support our
PE team with their wide range of work and to learn from them.
So welcome to Mr Huggins, Mr Impey and Mr Scott.READING, READING, READING ! ! Please keep your child’s reading skills and confidence flying over the summer break by encouraging them to read. Online school reading resources are still available such as Bug Club, and Oxford Owls is a free online reading library you can access. The Luton Library Service have launched their Summer Reading Challenge - you can find out more about this by following the link on our school website. For children in Years 3 to 6 using Accelerated Reader, keep reading books and they can do the associated quiz by following the link on the AR page of our school website too. It all counts ... even in the holidays! 100 BOOKS READING CHALLENGE! In September, we are launching our 100 BOOKS READING CHALLENGE. These are one hundred books that we feel enrich a child’s reading diet at primary age. Each child will receive a Sticker Book with 100 stickers to collect, one per book that they read. Watch this space for more information in September.
Goodbye
We need to say a fond farewell to Mrs Mia Iaz who is leaving
our Foundation Stage team to relocate to the north of England
due to her husband’s work. I know Mrs Iaz is very sad to be
leaving us because she considers the school and her
colleagues as her second family. Best of luck to your young
family for the future and keep in touch, Mrs Iaz.
Mr Sam Thompson also leaves us at the end of term to
relocate to the coast to join his family who have already
moved. Mr Thompson has had a number of roles with us and I’d
like to thank him for lending us his skills, enthusiasm and
versatility over the past few years and for being a fantastic
role model for our pupils.
Miss Jo Stuckey is also moving on to pastures new and we’d
like to thank her for all her work in Year 2 over recent years.
