Introduction
• Mbala town (formerly Abercorn) will on 25th November
2018 host the commemoration of 100 years since the
end of the First World War.
• It is in Mbala town where the German troops
surrendered their weapons to the British forces on
25th November 2018 to signal the complete end of the
War.
• The year 2018 marks 100 years since the end of WWI a n d
therefore, Zambia will take advantage of this
renewed interest and ensure that the rest of the world
is aware of this important part of history. The Country
has a big role to play in preserving this history for
future generations and create an opportunity for the
promotion of tourism and investment in Northern
Province and the entire Northern Circuit.
Destination Mbala 2018
• Provincial Administration in Northern Province will host
the centenary commemoration to mark the end of the
First World War alongside the Northern Province tourism
and investment Expo.
• These events are tentatively expected to start on 14th
November building up to the main event which will be
held in Mbala on 25th November, 2018.Why visit Mbala
• To witness this once in a life time historical event marking
100 years since the end of the First World War.
• This event will be part of a bigger international
programme when the world remembers the tragedy of
World War One.
• 19 foreign countries that took part in the East Africa
Campaign are expected to participate in the centenary
commemoration
• The event will be remembered across many parts of the
world as we pay our respects to those who gave their lives
in conflict that we might live peacefully today.
• To explore the fascinating tourism sites in Mbala town
such as the great Kalambo Falls, Lake Chila, Mbala old
prison, Moto Moto Museum, world war one trenches and
tunnels and others
• To appreciate and explore the possibility of investing in
various sectors within Mbala and other surrounding
areas.
• These sectors include hotel and lodge facilities, Bungee
jumping, mountain climbing, scuba diving, angling and
many others
• To sample out the traditional cuisine
• To have a feel of beautiful climatic conditions similar to
the western world weather• It was also at this site that the Germany General Von
Lettow Vorbeck , ‘a man noted as much for his humanity
as for his courage, marched into Mbala to this place at the
head of his force’ had received the news of Germany
surrender and the armistice on 14th November, 1918.
Lake Chila
• The site barely 500m from Mbala Old Prison on the
Mbala-Chiyanga road is where the Germany Army threw
their Ordinance and weapons to signify Germany
surrender and end of WW1 hostilities in Northern
Rhodesia in 1918. It is an attractive scenery worth a visit
en route to Kalambo waterfalls

• Mbala Old Prison is one of
the numerous historic buildingsHow to reach the Northern Province By Road: 850km all weather road to Kasama from Lusaka and 1000km to Mbala from Lusaka. By Air: 1 ½ hours direct flight to Mbala from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) in Lusaka. People can also fly to Mbala Via Kasama taking approximately 2hours. Where to lodge in Mbala and Northern Province The province has various lodges offering rates ranging from $25 per night per person to $150 per night per person. Some lodges available in the province include: Kasama Lodge, Sinamu Lodge, Alitasha Lodge, Kasembo Lodge, Kalambo Lodge, Lake Chila Lodge, Ndole Bay Lodge and several others.
The total estimated bed space in the province is around 900.
However, during the Centenary Celebrations and Expo,
arrangements are being made in partnership with Mahogany Air
to fly delegates from Lusaka, Livingstone and the Copperbelt to
be coming to the Expo and Centenary Celebrations on a daily
basis from their respective lodges to the Northern Province.
Kalebalika Cottages, Kasama
Camping tents will also be mounted at strategic points such as
Lumangwe falls, Chishimba falls, Mwela Rocks, Kalambo falls,
Nsumbu National Park and other areas.
