Overarching Rules
Primer Rationale
This draft primer is designed to relay our plans for NOVA Open 2015. It is subject to change and your
input as a potential attendee is strongly requested via forums or to novaopen@gmail.com. The rationale
for the design of our various events:

1.0 Tournament Format
All of NOVA Open's Warmachine and Hordes
events will utilize the array of special rules and
options available in the Steamroller 2015 Tournament Packet (SR2015), unless otherwise noted. While
SR2015 is currently being Beta Tested at this time, once finalized, this packet is available for free on
Privateer Press' website, and will be available for viewing at the Judge's desk.
http://privateerpress.com/organized-play/steamroller-tournaments. This applies to the Masters and
Hardcore tournament formats, which are also in Beta and subject to change. All events will use the
following Tournament Variants unless otherwise noted:
Army List: STANDARD– Second list optional. All lists are subject to the same point constraints and
must be led by warcasters/warlocks from the same faction. Players cannot include the same version of
a model or unit with FA:C in more than one list.
Game Timing: STANDARD –Deathclock rules: 35 points will have 42 minutes per player, 50 point
events have 60 minutes per player.
Tiebreakers: Refer to the Steamroller Rules Packet
Final Standings: Refer to the Steamroller Rules Packet

1.1 Army Lists
Tournament sheets will be available at the Judge’s Table. Pre-generated lists are also acceptable, but must
be legible. All lists will be validated prior to the first round of each tournament. All lists must contain
one, and only one, warcaster/warlock.
1.2 Registration
45 minutes before the scheduled start of an event, army list(s) may be turned in at the Judges’ desk. This
will register you for that event. A last call for army lists will occur 10 minutes prior to the event start
time. At 5 minutes prior to the event start time, army lists will no longer be accepted in order to allow list
validation and pairings to be made before the event start time. The Tournament Organizer may make
exceptions to this rule at his/her discretion. For instance: if there is an odd number of players and
another player would help avoid a bye, etc. NOTE: Players may not turn in army lists for another player;
everyone has to turn in their own list.
1.3 Terrain
Terrain at the NOVA Open has been designed to combine a pleasing aesthetic and playability. A more
thorough guide to Warmachine and Hordes terrain will be made available in the near future. The
following terrain guidelines are in effect for the duration of the NOVA Open:
■ Hills are 1” tall regardless of actual height, and thus do not block Line of Sight to any model. They do
grant the standard elevation bonuses.
■ Fences, small ruins and barricades all count as linear obstacles. They are 1” tall, ½” wide, and 4” long
when possible. Like standard Linear Obstacles, they offer cover when within 1”, and confer a +2 DEF
bonus when using reach to attack over them.
■ Line of Sight blocking items are non-destructible, and block line of sight completely regardless of any
windows or doorways they may have.
■ Forests are area terrain, and are defined by the scenic bases the trees themselves reside upon.
■ Water / swamp effects are area terrain, and are defined by the scenic base the terrain resides upon. All
water / swamp effects are considered shallow water.
When in doubt, confer with your opponent before the game to agree on what each piece of terrain will be.
If a mutual agreement cannot be found, call for a judge to get an official ruling. Such a ruling is
considered final, and cannot be contested once the game has begun. Each table will have four pieces of
terrain, minimum.

will be paired, and the Captains will play against one another, the First
Lieutenants will play against one another, and the Sergeants will play
against one another. The team with the better record for the round will
advance. Team Feat: Each team has a feat that can be used once during
the tournament. Prior to set-up for a round, teams must decide whether
or not to use their feat. This choice is revealed simultaneously so
neither team has foreknowledge of the other team's plan. When a team
chooses to use their feat, they may swap any two player's designated
titles (Captain, First Lieutenant or Sergeant.) These new designations
persist for the remainder of the tournament. NOTE: All teams must
have a name. All score sheets must have the player’s rank written on
them. Register as a team by turning in all three army sheets at once.

Special Rules Random Warcaster/Warlock: Do not include a Warcaster or Warlock in your
list. The Warlock/Warcaster leading your army will be randomly determined
at the beginning of each round. Once your caster has been chosen, the
following rules apply:
■ The caster becomes a Friendly Faction model and gains all the benefits of
being a caster of that game system. Focus and Fury manipulation of the
caster will change as part of the army’s parent game system.
■ Warjack and Warbeast text on the casters card will change as part of the
army’s parent game system with the exception of offensive spells or
offensive abilities. Offensive spells or abilities wording remains
unchanged on the card.
■ Abilities and Spell effects on the caster cards that add Focus will remove
Fury in a Hordes army.
■ Abilities and Spell effects on the caster cards that remove Fury will add
Focus in a Warmachine army.
■ Elite Cadre and similar abilities of the warcaster/warlock are lost unless
the defined models exist in the army they are playing for. Abilities/spells
that heal/repair will change as part of the army’s parent game system.
■ Animosity and Abilities that specify caster battlegroup types are removed
from their card.
Scoring:
The player with the most boss points at the end of the event will be crowned
The Boss. (tie breakers will be determined by record, army points killed.) All
Scoring will be recorded on the Player Sheets. It is up to you to record any
achievements and bonus boss points gathered during the event. Boss Points
are defined on the back of the each players sheet, and are earned by achieving
various milestones throughout the event.
IMPORTANT: If you lose your sheet, you lose any points you gained up to
the point where a replacement player sheet has been issued.
The NOVA Open is not using all listed Wheel Spaces per the Crippled System
rules.
