DRAWING THE BIG PICTURE Motivation & Vision
The event is held during the event “Olympic Games in Kiel 1972 I
2022”. 50 years after the Olympic Games, a unique event with the
old and new Olympic classes should take place to celebrate a true
sports festival in Kiel 2022.
In order to give the sailing competitions a stage, the Kieler Yacht-Club
(KYC) is standing at the side of the state capital Kiel. We are looking
forward to host an unforgettable Event based on our long and
successful history with the well known Kiel Week and all kinds of
championships.
Sailing venue (onshore and offshore), infrastructure and
accommodation is the famous Kiel fjord and the Olympic sailing
Center Kiel-Schilksee: hosting two Olympics, over 130 years of Kiel
Week and other regattas like many Worlds and Europeans.
Date of the Event: from 18th to 28th August 2022.

Just like Munich and Augsburg as the hosts at the time, the state capital

and varied supporting program. Sailing is to be the focus of the
KIELER YACHT-CLUB E.V. celebrations. The focus will be on the Olympic classes of then and now. In
addition, the Kiel Yacht-Club applied for the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra17
World Championship which should takes places right after the racing days

On 28 August 1972, the Olympic flame arrived in Kiel, thus
opening the Olympic sailing competitions held in Kiel-Schilksee Dr. Carsten Krage
from 29 August to 8 September. During these days the world elite President Kieler Yacht-Club
of sailing sports sailed on the Kiel Fjord in six Olympic boat
classes for the medals.
But the competitions were not only an outstanding event for Kiel
in sporting terms. The holding of the 1972 Olympic sailing
competitions in Kiel-Schilksee had a great influence on public
perception, awareness and urban development.

association and there (championship) requirements.
The 49er 49erFX & Nacra17 will possibly sail their regatta
from Monday to Sunday (22-28 August 2022).18

strong background in Olympic and international
classes as well as very experienced
international global jury (IJ) in alignment with
the class associations

Budget
OLYMPIC GAMES IN KIEL 1972 I 2022
• Overall budget: usual costs and requirements for Race
Management, Media, Event Locations, Jury etc. will be covered
by entry fees and further funding.
• Sponsors: According to the event “Olympic Games in Kiel 1972
I 2022” the City of Kiel and the Land Schleswig-Holstein support
the Championships. Sponsors will be targeted. There are very
strong partnerships with existing sponsors of Kiel Week and
Worlds. This will be leveraged for supporting the Championships.
• Marketing Agency: The Kieler Yacht-Club is the 100% owner of
Point of Sailing Marketing GmbH (PoS) with 6 employees
responsible for the event organization and the marketing
activities of the event. The Agency is also responsible for the
