THE ORIGINS…
The Publication Management System and Service - PUMA - we are presenting here, is the first step towards
creating an Italian network of repositories, looking at the EU-DRIVER and OpenAIRE vision.
PUMA is a software infrastructure, user focussed and service oriented, developed by the Institute of Science and Information
Technologies (ISTI-CNR).
The origins of ISTI are to be traced back to CSCE, the Center for the Study of Electronic Computers established with the specific
purpose of designing and building the first electronic computer entirely built in Italy: the CEP, standing for “Pisan Electronic Computer”.

The aim of PUMA is to assist scientists to make their research results immediatly available world-wide and provides
them with appropriate on-line facilities to access the technical/scientific
documentation of others working in the same field. Repositories by geographical
distribution
It presently manages 33 CNR repositories produced by Institutes spread all over 15

the country. Each Institution has its own Collections. 5

The repository contents cover most of the CNR thematic areas.
The information lifecycle in PUMA
¡ Digital documents and their descriptions (metadata) are auto-archived by the Repositories by CNR Departments

§ The Repository contains 44.425 bibliographic descriptions
§ 80% of Grey Literature bibliographic descriptions have its own digital version of the work 80% . The percentage of entries and of
digital and open access documents is growing daily.
§ PUMA is compliant with the guidelines of DRIVER and DRIVER II, the "Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European
Research" projects. In this vision any form of scientific-content resource, including scientific/technical reports, research articles,
experimental or observational data, rich media and other digital objects should be freely accessible through simple Internet-based
infrastructures.
§ PUMA is able to manage and storage all information pertaining to the research projects funded by the European Commission.
§ Special functions are provided by the additional software module MetaPub that uses repository content to delivery different
bibliographic and administrative services.
§ MetaPub and PUMA open the repositories to the OAI world by implementing the OAI-PMH protocol (harvesting is allowed under
authorization). It makes PUMA an Open System with an access and an international diffusion.
§ PUMA contents are harvested by Openaire, that supports an infrastructure with more than 8 millions of OA publications linked
to funding-datasets-organizations-people.
