WELCOME TO EASTBURY COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Eastbury is a wonderful school in which to learn and work. I am proud and privileged to be the
Executive Head teacher and work in partnership with enthusiastic pupils, committed staff,
supportive governors and parents.
At Eastbury, we want every pupil to be happy and part of our success story. All staff work
extremely hard and do their best to ensure that all pupils are healthy, feel safe and are very well
educated. We therefore have high expectations and ambitions for every pupil. Our mission
statement is 'Getting the best from and for all our learners' and this is fast becoming a reality.
In every community there is a need for certain rules, regulations and systems to ensure harmony
and effective working. At Eastbury our rules are simple and benefit the school community as well as the individuals
within it.
This guide is designed to enable you to understand how our community works and what your role and responsibilities
are within it. Clearly, we cannot cover everything in one guide, but if you are true to yourself and you respect those
around you, all will be well. Respect and common sense are the foundations of all that we do here at Eastbury, teaching
all to ‘treat other as you would like to be treated.’
We want you to enjoy your time here at Eastbury and to thrive and excel. You are joining a strong, supportive and caring
community which is often compared to a family. You will make friendships that will last a lifetime and take away
memories that you will value over the years ahead.
Eastbury Community became an all-though 3-19 school in September 2015, building on our reputation for excellence as
an 11-19 Comprehensive. During the 2017/2018 term we completed some further refurbishment in a superb campus for
learning.
School is part of your preparation for the future. Our number one aim is to ensure that you are ready for the challenges
that lie ahead and well equipped to make a success of your future life. We want you to be independent, have a good
career and make a real and positive impact to your local, national and global community.
Every lesson counts here at Eastbury and we expect you to arrive at school and every lesson on time, and be ready and
fully prepared to learn. Your exam grades and your participation in school life will impact on the options open to you
after school. All our pupils are given the opportunity to achieve the best possible grades so that they can progress to the
university or college of their choice, or move successfully straight into the world of work through an apprenticeship. Just
as important as exam grades are the skills, qualities and values which will turn these paper qualifications into success
and help to promote happiness in later life.
Academic qualifications will open the next door, but they are no guarantee of success in themselves. It is the skills such
as problem-solving, analysis, communication, persuasion, personal organisation and the ability to work with others that
will drive success in the wider world. The important qualities of confidence, resilience, self-reliance, perseverance and
openness to new ideas, together with a readiness to take the initiative, to innovate and to make things happen will
enable you to stand out from the crowd and be the best. Taking part in the wide range of sports and cultural activities at
the school can help you to develop these important skills and attributes as well as being highly enjoyable

I hope that you will consider your own faith and beliefs as a highly important part of your development. I want all pupils
to become actively involved in our school community by becoming leaders, peer mediators, prefects or by joining the
school council.
You must always remember that you have a key role in your own success. To make the most of your time at Eastbury
you must be ready to seize the many opportunities both in the classroom and in the many clubs we run. You must take
responsibility for your own actions and learning. You must be ambitious and develop a clear sense of what you want to
achieve and how you will contribute to society.
Finally, we want everybody to be the best they can be in everything they do. Always seek to improve on your personal
best. To achieve your best you should always listen, and act on the advice you will be given throughout your schooling.
As Executive Head teacher, I am always ready to listen to the most important people in the school, our pupils. I will
meet with you all formally in assemblies and with some of you as part of the school council. I welcome discussions with
you as individuals as I walk around the school or in the canteen. I am keen to hear about your ambitions and how you
think the school can be improved. My ambition is for Eastbury to become one of the best schools in the world, and
together we can achieve this.

WELCOME TO EASTBURY - Primary Phase
I am proud and fortunate to be leading the Primary Phase as we continue to grow our provision for younger pupils.
We encourage our pupils to achieve the highest possible personal standards through Values Education and our positive
approach to behaviour. We also foster ‘a growth mindset’ that builds towards academic success. In our assemblies, we
use a ‘Value of the Month’ to develop our pupils local and global awareness and regularly invite special guests from the
local community to talk about their work in Barking and the wider world.
Parents and carers are ‘the golden thread’ woven into every vibrant and successful school. We keep families well
informed of their children’s progress, school events and have established regular parent information sessions along with
opportunities to visit lessons. Parents and carers are also invited into school to share our celebrations of achievement.
Embracing the opportunities and ‘all through school’ provides, our Secondary pupils, staff and governors always enjoy
meeting our young pupils. We are lucky to be able to work with teachers and pupils from many of our secondary
departments who enrich the learning of our pupils. Links between the Primary and Secondary Phases strengthen each
year: we have much to look forward to as we grow and learn together.

Primary School Locator
The primary school and nursery entrance are on Wilmington Gardens.
The beginning of the day is a busy time for everyone, and it is important for the school day to start on time. If you
need to let the class teacher know about something, you can send a message to them via the teaching assistant at
the door.
The class teachers are available to speak to parents at 3.15pm on most days or you can arrange a mutually
convenient time. School ends at 3.15pm for all children. Please be on time to collect your child at the end of the
school day. If you are delayed, please telephone the office and advise us of this so that we can reassure your
child that you are on your way.
We also ask that you let the class teacher know if anyone other than the usual adult is coming to collect your
child. Anyone collecting the children should be at least 14 years of age.

Before your child starts Primary School:
Buy the school uniform, including PE kit.
Label everything, including shoes and trainers, coat, and all books, with your child’s name (and form class
once you know it).
Be sure the school have your contact number(s) and current address. Please keep us informed of any
changes.
Help your child to get their School bag ready the night before.
Agree a bedtime for school days.
Have a practice run for getting up earlier, getting ready and travelling to school on time if you feel you
need to.
ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL
Attendance is important – right from the start!
100% attendance is expected of all our pupils at Eastbury Community School.
The learning of any pupil who goes below 95% will be affected.
A pupil whose attendance is below 90% is a serious concern and they are known as persistently absent
pupils. We will need to discuss attendance with parents and a member of the school Access and
Attendance team.
Medical Appointments
Please try to book visits to the doctor or dentist after school, or during holidays as
far as is possible, although we do realise, with younger pupils, appointment times
may not be a choice.
Bedtime Routines
Parents and carers will know getting their child up for school each day will be hard if they haven’t had enough
sleep. Tired children won’t be able to learn effectively. We advise you to plan a regular bedtime with a story
in the early evening so that children wake up fresh and full of energy for school.

Values Education at Eastbury Community Primary
Alongside the established curriculum areas of the Early Years and the New Primary Curriculum, we will
be teaching Values Education at Eastbury Community Primary School. Values Education is a simple but
powerful way to support the development of young learners so that they become confident, reflective
and caring citizens.
Each half term, we will focus on one of the six values below. Our assemblies and learning time will
provide us with opportunities to share and live our values. All our pupils, parents and the adults in
school will be a part of our Values Education programme.
When you visit our school, you will see our ‘Value of the term’ on display in the main entrance and also
in the learning and behaviour all around the school!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND RELATIONSHIPS IN SCHOOL –
PREVENTING BULLYING
We believe in a positive approach to behaviour management at Eastbury School. We will have the
highest expectations for behaviour and make it very clear exactly how we expect our children to
behave. We will show them if necessary and always express our requests in terms of what we want our
children to do.
If a pupil makes poor behaviour choices there will be age appropriate consequences and apologies
made.
Across the entire school at Eastbury we have a very strong anti-bullying policy. Our Primary pupils are
taught through PSHE and the Values Education programme about the importance of having respect for
each other. They are taught how to deal with situations, when and if they arise, at an age appropriate
level. All the staff in the Primary Phase are committed to ensuring our pupils play and learn together
showing respect, consideration and kindness.
Bullying of any kind is not tolerated at Eastbury.

EYFS RECEPTION 2018 – 2019
The Early Years Foundation Stage is a curriculum for children from birth to five. We follow the curriculum
in Nursery and Reception- it is based on 4 principles:

Enabling Environments
Learning and Development
Each child learns skills, acquires new knowledge and demonstrates their understanding through
seven areas of learning and development.
The three Prime Areas of learning are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Communication and Language
Physical Development.
As the children develop, the Prime Areas help them to increase their skills in the four Specific
Areas of Learning:
Literacy
Maths
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
In the Eastbury Community School Primary Phase, pupils will develop their knowledge and skills
through learning opportunities which are planned by their teachers. The EYFS encourages schools
and parents to work together in order to enable children develop to their full potential. Our EYFS
Curriculum will also support our pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development. The personal
development of children plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve.

Eastbury is proud to be a diverse multicultural school, with pupils and staff from all of the main religions
and with over 63 community languages spoken in the school. Our theme for community cohesion is ‘Being

School’s Commitment
Eastbury Community School commits itself to:
1. provide a safe, well-ordered, and caring environment where pupils are free from fear and
discrimination.
2. ensure that all pupils are given support and guidance to do their best and feel valued as individuals.
3. reward pupils for their academic, sporting and social achievements.
4. deal swiftly with any incidents or concerns relating to our pupils.
5. provide appropriate curriculum pathways to meet the needs and aspirations of all our pupils.
6. have clear aims, targets and expectations for all pupils.
7. provide opportunities for parents/carers to discuss their child’s learning, and give an annual written
report of their child’s progress.
8. ensure that all alleged incidents of bullying and acts of discrimination are fully investigated and dealt
with according to the agreed policies laid down by the school.
9. offer pupils (through the student council) and parents/carers the opportunity to express their views
on school issues.

1. make sure my child arrives at school safely and on time.
2. make sure my child is collected from school on time.
3. ensure my/our child attends in school uniform together with a school bag for reading books, the home -
school communication book and any other information/school letters.
4. encourage high standards of attendance and punctuality, and not take holidays during term time.
5. in the case of absence, inform the school immediately, and provide a note explaining the reason for
absence upon return.
6. maintain close contact with the school regarding any concerns or problems which may affect learning
or behaviour, first raising concerns with my child’s class teacher.
7. regularly discuss learning and progress, and congratulate my child when they receive a reward from
school.
8. attend all parents’/carers’ evenings for discussions about pupil progress and where possible, attend
school concerts, events and family assemblies.
9. support the school’s behaviour policy, e-safety guidelines, anti-bullying policy and all other school
policies.
10. support my child’s learning on a regular basis, sharing stories and supporting with early reading books;
also supporting the school’s e-safety policy and monitoring internet use in the home.
11. respect the no parking zone outside the school marked by zig-zags.
12. make sure I inform the school of any change in my/our contact details.
HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT 17

1. work hard and do their best work at all times.
2. be well behaved all the time.
3. be helpful and friendly to other children and adults.
4. take good care of the equipment and the building.
5. talk quietly inside
6. walk sensibly inside the buildings.

1. support your child’s learning to help them achieve the best.

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE
In the rare event that parents have a concern about any aspect of their child's education and general
welfare, communication with the school at the earliest opportunity is encouraged to resolve it.
Parents are asked to contact their child’s class teacher, or for more serious concerns, the Primary Head
directly. Governors and Parent-Governors in particular, are also available to parents if they wish to consult
them.

The school needs to be aware of any medical issues that your child may
have. Parents and carers have a responsibility to inform the school
immediately of any change in medical condition/s and circumstances.
If your child is on long-term medication please complete the medical form
and ensure that the School office has a supply should it need to be
administered at school. In this case, we would involve the Local School
Nursing team and if necessary, arrange for a Care Plan to be drawn up.
If your child needs to use an inhaler for asthma, we will ask the parent to
complete an Asthma form and permission for the child to use the inhaler at school; keeping 2 named
pumps at school (both in date) in a secure container away from pupils.
If a child is in danger from anaphylactic shock through allergic reaction, 2 epi pens (in date) must be kept
at school and staff trained to use them.
If your child feels unwell at any time during the school day the staff will monitor them and if necessary
pupils may spend time in our sick room.
If your child needs to come home, we will contact you.
Parents should note that the person responsible for medical welfare is not allowed to administer any oral
medication (such as paracetamol) and is only qualified to deal with very minor injuries.
If your child needs to go to hospital, in non-emergency situations you will be contacted and asked to
collect your child.
In the case of an emergency, we will call an ambulance and contact you. If you are unable to get to the
school in time, you will be asked to attend the appropriate hospital as soon as possible.
We will make sure a member of staff goes with your child to the hospital and waits with them for you to
arrive.
Please refer to our policies for pupils with medical needs should you require further information.

The school cannot accept responsibility for students’ valuables or toys.
Expensive items must be left at home.
Personal stereos or computer games should not be brought into school; if they are
seen they may be confiscated.
Payment for school trips is through ParentPay – money is rarely necessary.
Mobile Phones & MP3 Players
Mobile phones are not to be seen or heard on the school premises. Emergency calls can be made
from a school phone with the permission of a member of staff.
The school will not be held responsible or investigate the loss of mobile phones or mp3 players in school.
We hope that such steps will improve the security and safety of all students at Eastbury and ask for your
support in implementing the ban of the use of mobile phones and mp3 players in school.
Parental Mobile Phone Use
Mobile phones must not be used to make calls/take pictures in the playground or within the school
building, this is to ensure the safeguarding of all our pupils. Should you receive or need to make a call
please do so outside of the school building.
Exceptions will be made during special assemblies and productions when parents may use their phone to
take pictures or videos.

School dinners are now free for all children up to Year 2!
Please encourage your child to have the hot dinner as they provide a nutritious meal in the
middle of the day.
If you prefer, your child may bring a packed lunch in a clearly labelled lunch box. Please note
our school has a healthy eating policy and strict guidelines regarding packed lunch contents.
Sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks are not to be included.
Pupils will be given a healthy fruit snack, and milk (free to under 5s or pupils receiving free
school meals) or water mid-morning.
Let us know of any dietary requirements or allergies.
This is very important – our school menu is flexible, there are vegetarian and halal options along with salad
and a healthy sweet or fruit each day.

Instead of paying cash parents/carers will be requested to set-up an online account with ParentPay (an
online payment facility) before September. ParentPay offers you the freedom to make payments online
whenever and wherever you like, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - safe in the knowledge that the
technology used is of the highest internet security available. Parents/carers will receive a letter giving full
instructions on how to use this site and should you need help, assistance can be requested from staff at the
school’s office.
What if I don’t have access to a computer?
Parents who need to continue making payments by cash may do so using the
PayPoint network at local convenience stores.

Why do I need an account and how do I get started?
We are a cashless school . We will send you an activation letter containing your activation username and
password to enable you to setup your ParentPay account. During the activation process you will be guided
through changing your username and password to something more memorable. If you have more than one
child at a ParentPay school/s you can also add children to a single account providing one login for all
children at ParentPay schools.

Our school is a healthy school which supports its pupils to become independent, capable
members of the community with the skills to constructively participate and make a
positive contribution to the place where we live.
Walking and cycling:
o keeps us fit and healthy
o helps our pupils develop road safety skills which will keep them
safe as they travel further afield and more independently
o helps keep our local air clean, and our streets free from congestion
o is a life skill that everyone should be able to benefit from.
What we do:
o We promote safe and active travel as much as possible by using our noticeboard, displays,
newsletter and website
o We encourage all members of our school community to walk, cycle or travel by public transport
for the journey to school
o Where a car must be used we ask parents to drive only part of the way, and then walk to the
primary entrance with their children
o We ask everyone who travels by bus to consider whether they could actually walk instead, and
if they can’t walk all the way to get off the bus at least two stops early and walk the last part
of the journey
o All local school trips are made by public transport
where possible, or on foot if the destination is
close by
o We let all new pupils and their parents/carers know that we are an active
travel school before the child starts at our school
o We ask families driving to school and parking or
stopping and dropping in the near vicinity to do so
legally, safely and with respect for our neighbours and
local residents.
It is not acceptable to park or wait on double yellow lines, on the school zigzags or across residential
driveways for any length of time. Please note parking is not permitted at any time outside of the school
gates.
If you drive your child/ren to school, you should park your car and walk the last 5 minutes of the journey
from the entrance of the school. Driving up and parking near to the school gates is illegal and dangerous.
