Parent Handbook 2021- 2022 - Joseph Chamberlain College
A Message from the Principal
Congratulations to you and your son/daughter for successfully securing a place at
Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College. After an unusual couple of years, we are
delighted that you have chosen us and assure you that your son or daughter will
enjoy the best sixth form education we can offer during their time here.

The outstanding reputation of the College is based on our excellent teaching, our
outstanding support, our high achievement rates and the strong progress made by all
of our students, regardless of their starting points. We consistently perform higher than
any other school sixth form or college in the city and this puts us in the strong position
as the leading sixth form college in Birmingham and Solihull. Your son or daughter has
therefore secured a place at Joseph Chamberlain College against fierce
competition because of his or her determination to succeed in the future.

Our teachers and support staff are truly inspirational. They care a great deal about
our students’ learning and will work with them to help achieve the excellent
qualifications they need to progress to university or to employment in the future.
When the time comes to apply to university, you and your son or daughter will
receive detailed advice and guidance throughout the process. It is the excellent
advice and guidance that we give which has, over the years, resulted in over 90% of
our students going on to university each year, with many securing places on the
country’s most prestigious degree courses.

In addition, we are offer a wide range of additional experiences and opportunities to
all of our students to develop their personal and social skills. Our extra-curricular
programme helps to develop our students into well rounded, confident and able
young people, equipped for life in Modern Britain. These clubs, societies and
academies include groups such as the Debate Society, The Duke of Edinburgh
Award, Sports, Drama, Careers in Medicine, Law Society plus many more. We hope
that you will encourage your son or daughter to take part in these activities to enrich
their CVs and to enhance their college experience.

As parents and carers, we will work closely with you to ensure that, together, we
develop your son’s or daughter’s dedication to study. As a partnership, we all want
the same thing – success for our young people. We will keep in regular contact with
you through reports and parents’ evenings, as well as through your son’s or
daughter’s Personal Progress Tutor. In college, we will challenge your son or daughter
academically, making sure that they work hard to achieve their very best and we
hope that you will do the same at home. For example, we expect parents to help us
make sure that our students’ attendance and punctuality are excellent. It is important
for their success that they do not miss valuable class time so we do not give
permission for trips and holidays outside these times.

You and your son/daughter are now part of the JCC family.
We are an exciting and aspirational community and really
look forward to meeting you in the very near future.

If you need anything at all, do get in touch with us.

With my best wishes,

Tony Day
Principal.

Parental Engagement Programme

Here at JCC, student safety and wellbeing is paramount. We believe it is
imperative that parents and carers are up to date with the ever changing
world young people live in. It is important that we are aware of the day to
day challenges 16-19 year olds face, therefore, JCC would like to
welcome you all to our parents and carers programme on Student safety
and wellbeing. The 4 part programme will be run by our Progression
manager and will provide an insight into the online world, life of a young
person and societal pressures. Dates will be announced in the new
academic year and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Student Behaviour That Supports
Learning
We want to be able to build a professional working relationship with
your child, but we can only do this if they are prepared to make a
commitment to behave in a mature manner whilst studying with us.

When your child signed the enrolment form and learning agreement,
they agreed to follow the Student Charter ‘The JCC10’

For significant incidents of poor behaviour we may ask you to come
into college to discuss how we can support and modify your child’s
behaviour.

Rewards
We believe in students work best when they are offered praise. This can
be offered in many ways including:
• praise postcards being sent home
• verbal praise offered by their class teacher or their progress tutor
• parents informed by email, telephone, text message or face to face
  meetings
• weekly emails sent out for excellent attendance and punctuality
• monthly vouchers given out for 100% attendance and punctuality for
attending period 1 lessons on time
• termly certificates offered for very high attendance and punctuality
• attendance at the end of year trip and annual student awards

Student Attendance and punctuality
The College recognises that some absences are unavoidable and
therefore some will classed as authorised.

Parents are expected to contact the College by sending an email to
absence@jcc.ac.uk before 9:00 am on the day of absence. If your child
is absent and the College has not been notified your child’s Personal
Progress Tutor may contact you.

Period 1 lesson 9am
If your child has a lesson at 9am and is either absent or is late
you will be sent a text message around midday to inform you.

Provided you have registered your email with us all parents will be sent on
a daily basis an email showing the attendance and punctuality of their
child. In this way we can work together to address any concerns about
poor attendance or punctuality.

We will also send you on a weekly basis if your child has achieved 100%
attendance and punctuality for a particular week.

What are Target Grades?
From the grades your child achieves in their GCSE’s a grade is
predicted through A level Performance Systems (ALPS). As a college
we use this grade to measure the progress your child is making.

How is an AS/A level course assessed?
Most of the AS/A level subjects are assessed by an end of year
external examination. If your child is studying an AS/A level
programme they will have around 10 formal Monthly Assessment
Points (MAPS). These are held under exam conditions in their
classroom and students are graded on the 7 point A level
scheme with grade A*(the highest), A,B,C,D,E to grade U(fail).
These grades are our internal assessments and do not count
towards your child’s final grade. Please click here for the MAP
 calendar of assessments

Teachers use these grades to measure the progress of your child
and to put in intervention where needed. You can check your
child’s MAP grades through Parent ProPortal.

                                                                      17
How is a Vocational or BTEC course
assessed?
Your child may be studying a level 2 or level 3 Vocational BTEC course.
These courses consist of a number of units some of which are internally
assessed and others externally assessed through an exam element.

Externally-assessed units - each assessment is taken under specified
conditions, then marked by the exam board and a grade awarded.

Internally-assessed units - students are set work to complete by a
deadline. If they meet the deadline they will have ONE opportunity to
improve their assignment grade. If a student fails to meet the assignment
deadline their work will be marked when submitted and graded but there
will be no further opportunity to improve the grade. We strongly
encourage students to hand in their work by the deadline.

Grading of BTEC units - Units are assessed using a grading scale of
Distinction (D) which is the highest, Merit (M), Pass (P), Near Pass (N) and
Unclassified (U). The grade of Near Pass is used for externally-assessed
units only.

learning.

At the start of this academic year students will be taught with a mixture
of face to face learning supplemented with online learning.

How to support your
child through exams
Exams are a stressful time for any young person. Mood
swings and outbursts are more likely to occur during
this period. Look out for other indicators that your child
may be struggling, including poor sleep patterns or a
change in appetite or behaviour. There are lots of
ways to prepare for the lead up to exams, ways of
supporting during exam weeks and thinking about how
you will react and respond on the day if they don’t get
the result that they, or you, are hoping for.

Here are some useful tips:

  • Plan ahead - speak to their progress tutor to find
out what revision techniques they recommend

  • Work with your child to find what revision style
    works for them

  • Encourage breaks and balance of work load and
    enjoyable activities

  • Make sure they are eating and drinking at regular
    intervals

  • Encourage them to take some time after revising
    to wind down

  • Reassure them – reinforce that you are and will be
proud of them no matter what happens

  • Don’t try to police the young person

  • Remain positive and hopeful

  • Plan a treat or an activity together to mark the
    end of the exams
