Patent Citation Search
The report of a Patent Citation Search contains both cited and citing documents. The search is
based on a specific patent document. Most of the found citations are patents but the results may
also consist of articles or other technical literature.
With the result of a Citation Search you can follow the technological development and the
companies that are active in your field of technology. The results of a Citation Search give you a
quick and easy access to documents that contains closely related technology, not only what was
available when the application was filed but also what is to come after the application was filed.
Cited Documents
The Citation Search report contains relevant prior art found by the patent examiner in the search
and examination of the patent application. The cited documents are categorized on the basis of
relevance with the codes X, Y and A. Few cited documents may be indicative of groundbreaking
technology.
The cited documents describe the situation at the time when the patent application was filed at
the patent office. This means that the results of the cited documents are static.
Citing Documents
Based on the specific patent document, one can at a later citation search, conducted after that
the search report has been written, find newly added references in the same or related
technology. The newly added references which cite the patent document are referred to as citing
documents.
A search of citing documents provides a picture of newly available technology, where the results
change as new documents are published in the same or related technology.
If a patent document has many citing documents, it may be seen as an indication of the patent’s
strength.
Our information sources
In our Citation Search, we collect information from a variety of databases in order to obtain as
comprehensive picture as possible. We use databases such as Derwent Patent Citation Index
(DPCI), Epodoc, INPADOC, and EP Register.
