Utusan Malaysia Antartika bank biji benih semula jadi

                  pemenang.

Star Tapping biomass to the max

11/02/2012 FRIM carried out basic research on oil palm biomass in the 1980’s
Page : Special according to Dr Wan Asma Ibrahim which focussed primarily on the use of
Focus 16-17 oil palm biomass as alternative for the wood-based industries. FRIM now
concentrates on the availability, characterisation and utilisation of waste
palm tree biomass, development of bioethanol production from trunk sap,
and development of palm wood products (plywood, flooring, panel and
                    furniture).

Utusan Malaysia FRIM terima anugerah buku terbaik

21/02/2012 A survey conducted by FRIM as part of the Conservation of Biological
Page : Ecowatch 6 Diversity through Improved Forest Planning Tools Project (CBioD Project)
revealed that 91 percent of 1,300 households in Kuala Lumpur and
Selangor interviewed are willing to pay RM4 to protect the Belum-
Temenggor forest against logging and RM3 against poaching. The Project
also studies the recreational use and watershed values of the forest area.

New Straits Times FRIM buffer zone under threat

09/03/2012 A five-metre strip of land between FRIM and neighbouring residential and
Page : 5 industrial areas is under threat of encroachment that will affect the
biodiversity of the area. Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif hope that the local authorities
be aware of the buffer zone when approving house extensions and
development projects. Domestic wastes were dumped indiscriminately into
the fenced-up buffer zone. Open fires near FRIM and pollution of the
water catchment area are other issues that worry FRIM. The forest at
FRIM absorbs and recycles carbon dioxide produced by more than three
quarter million people every year, and fires could interfere with the carbon
                    system.

New Straits Times FRIM ranks high in global list

Utusan Malaysia Mengurus, mengekalkan hutan bakau

penahan ombak. Menurut Dr Shamsuddin Ibrahim, FRIM telah
memperkenalkan beberapa kaedah seperti geotiub, ‘comp-mat’, ‘comp-
pillow’ dan ‘bamboo encasement method’ (BEM).

Utusan Malaysia Kajian DNA balak

palm biomass as the EU countries have growing interest for eco-friendly
products. Biocomposites can fetch a price tag of RM3000 a tonne, and
biochemicals at RM9000 a tonne. The EU-Malaysia Biomass Sustainable
Production Initiative (Biomass-SP) has selected 45 small- and medium-sized
entrepreneurs to participate in the EU-Malaysia Biomass Entrepreneurs
Nurturing Programme. Biomass plant operators are eligible for pioneer

                    commercial operation.

New Straits Times National policy crucial to boost biomass sector

29/06/2012 Malaysia needs a national policy on biomass that outlines including others,
Page : B6 export volume and control of the price to attract more local investors. As a
cheaper alternative to generate power compared to gas and coal, many
international companies invested in biomass sector in Malaysia. This in turn
creates insufficiency of supply to the local companies to generate biomass-
powered plants in Malaysia. On top of that, the government pays 31 sen
per kilowatt per hour and the operators of the biomass-based power plants
are at loss and banks imposed conditions such as a secured biomass supply
for five years before approving a loan.

Star Transforming wood residues to energy: mill wastes are used to
                    feed biomass plants in Sarawak

06/08/2012 There are 14 biomass plants in Sarawak which supply energy for the
Page : News 6 plywood mills. The plants utilised 1.1 million tonnes wood residues in 2011
that were generated from their own mills or smaller mills, and other wood
processing factories. Sarawak boosts 45 plywood mills, 171 sawmills, 21
                    veneer mills and 34 dowel/moulding mills. 7,000 – 8,000 cu m plywood can
generate wood residues that can produce between 3MW and 5MW of
electricity. A 3MW capacity biomass plant costs between RM10 mil to RM15
mil to build, while a 5MW plant is between RM20 mil to RM30 mil. By
having its own biomass plant, a sawmill could save between RM400,000 to
RM500,000 a month in electricity bill.

Star Due diligence through DNA

21/07/2012 Biodiversity International launched a Kuala Lumpur-based facility to
Page : Ecowatch 3 improve the identification of timber species and their origin. The end
product would be an international database featuring genetic and stable
isotopes for 20 major commercial timbers. Fifty percent of wood exported
from Southeast Asia, the Amazon, central Africa and Russia is suspected to
be logged illegally. Technologies such as DNA fingerprinting and stable-
isotyping might be some of the solutions that can identify the origin of such
timber. In Malaysia, FRIM has undertaken studies to construct a DNA
database profiling that were geared towards achieving similar objevtive.
