centres around a group of strippers in Missis-
sippi, Katori Hall (the showrunner) and Karena
wanted to subvert the narrative of objectifica-
tion and exploitation that has always surrounded
this subject. Central to doing this was capturing
these characters through the lens of the female
gaze, and rooting the storytelling in the experi-
ence of each woman.

erment, and an exploration of how the meaning of
empowerment can shift from person to person. For
each of the 16 women in the video, Karena creates
a unique world for them to play within; to rule and
reign over. Collaborating closely with them in the
creative process, Karena made sure to speak
specifically to what makes each of them feel power-
ful, using a futuristic aesthetic to drive the narrative
that the future is female, and the future is now.

each episode of this first-of-its-kind production,
Karena wanted Swipe Night to be more than pure-
ly entertainment. Set in a fast-paced, apocalyptic
alternate reality, she saw an opportunity to create
a genuine adventure, and one where people can
really get to know themselves and the people they
match with.
