WELCOME MESSAGE
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town would like to extend a
congenial welcome to delegates on the African continent and across the globe to the 2019 UCT/O&G
Refresher Course. This auspicious event will be hosted on the 28 - 30 November 2019 at the DoubleTree by
Hilton Hotel Cape Town - Upper Eastside. The theme of the meeting is Quality of Life / Burden of Disease:
from Menarche to Menopause and beyond.

The meeting promises to deliver cutting-edge knowledge and advances in the management of common
conditions in critical stages of a woman’s life, commencing with menarche, advancing into the reproductive
years and culminating with the menopause. Leading international and home-grown faculty will deliver
state-of-the-art lectures in their respective fields.

Topics on the programme include: intrauterine growth restriction, infectious diseases in pregnancy,
aneuploidy screening, the role of ultrasound in modern obstetrics, maternal ischaemic heart disease
in pregnancy, diagnosis and management of placental acreta, biomarkers in Gynae cancer, Infertility,
Hormonal therapy, Endometriosis, non-surgical treatment of fibroids, PCOS, vaginal rejuvenation, the role
of vaginal mesh in prolapse surgery and many more.

Additionally, the Department of O&G at UCT will launch its inaugural Skills Upliftment Initiative supported
by the Nina Lipshitz Trust, at the 2019 UCT/O&G Refresher Course. The aim of this initiative is to invest in
the advancement of surgical and procedural skills that will have an impact on the improvement of women’s
health. Revolutionary surgical and sonographic workshops transcending Gynaecological Oncology, Family
Planning, Hysteroscopy, Laparoscopy, Pelvic floor surgery, Cardiotocography, Colposcopy, Gynaecological
and Obstetric Sonography will be addressed by this initiative. This series of workshops will be conducted
two days prior to commencement of the Refresher Course, however the Skills Upliftment Initiative
undertakes to live beyond the congress. The aim of the initiative is to advance surgical skills of not only
in-house trainees but also of doctors working in the periphery through a rural skills development outreach
programme. Watch the space…

Apart from the academic meeting, Cape Town has always enjoyed the status of being one of the leading
tourist destinations in the world. The organising committee encourages delegates to explore the hospitality
of the city including, amongst others, visiting Robben Island, Cape Point, the Waterfront and some of the
finest Wine Estates in the world.

The provisional programme for the Refresher Course and the pre-conference Skills Workshops are available
on the congress website.

The Organising Committee wishes you an outstanding, dynamic, valuable and enjoyable meeting.
