Red admiral Bake off!
Wooden spoons were drawn last Friday as teams from our Year 6 class geared up for a Bake Off competi-
tion. The cakes or biscuits had to have a Carswell theme, be well-presented and most of all be tasty!
Each group worked a single unit in this high pressure environment to complete their task and waited with
bated breath for the judges to enter the room. I had the pleasure of being a judge and Mrs Farr was our
extra-special visitor judge: lucky Red Admiral! It was very tough to choose as each group’s bakes were of a
high standard but we chose the banana cakes and commended the traditional biscuits. The cakes were
then sold to raise money for the class next term. Great work from all and a big thank you to Mrs Farr for
judging!Look at the quality of presentation in the photos above. The judges cleared their palates, chewed and tasted until they came to a very difficult decision. Terrific work from the Year six class who managed all this in half a day!
Our Year one class blessed the rains down in Africa on Thursday afternoon with the grand opening of their exhibition in the Mrs Thomas Gallery. They had a selec- tion of artefacts, stained-glass style paintings, still life photos and artworks. A lot of the work they did during the project centred around ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and it was used as inspiration for the wonderful work they put on display. If you have the time, please come and visit the gallery, the works will be up for the next month. Well done Peacock class, you made us all very proud!
Terrific learning from our Year twos this week
as they tackled how to understand analogue
clocks. Lucky they had actual clocks to use to
support them!
Tortoiseshell went to Albert
park on Thursday to sketch
trees. They chose a quiet
spot and had to really con-
centrate to see the shape of
the trunk and the leaves.
Great work Year three!Monarch’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! Lots of fun and frolics were had on Thursday afternoon in the hall with our Year twos. They dressed as their favour- ite Alice in Wonderland characters, did dancing and then sat down to a tea party. Mrs Cook even made two heart cakes, one for the White queen fans and one for the Red. What a fitting end to their ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ pro- ject!
I am collecting again for a second hand shoe stall at the school Summer Fair
to raise money for The Nasio Trust who support orphaned children in the
community in Kenya.
(see www.thenasiotrust.org for more info)
Do you have any unwanted kids footwear (shoes,
sandals, wellies etc) you would be happy to donate?
I will have a big bag each morning from Tues-
day 4th June in school reception which you can drop
them in.
Thank you for your support

A warm welcome to Ian Forrest and Jen Hoddinott who are our new parent governors! It’ll be great to
have them on board with their fresh eyes and new perspectives. They’ll be meeting the other governors
tonight (23rd May) at the governors social where teachers present an element of the work they’ve been
doing with their classes over the year.
I have a son, Adam, who is in year 5 (Gatekeeper) and has been at Carswell since
Reception Class. He’s really enjoyed his time at the school, and as a governor I
hope to support the staff in providing a great education for all our children. I’d be
delighted to talk to any parent with ideas or questions about the school. I teach
History at the University of Oxford, and try to keep up to speed with education pol-
icy generally. In my spare time I enjoy gardening and I try to do the Abingdon
Parkrun on Saturdays.
Hi, my name is Jen Hoddinott. I have two daugh-
ters, Hannah in Year 2 and Ellie who will start in
Reception from September. My professional
background is in marketing and communications
with a strong focus in stakeholder engagement
and reputation management. ’m originally from
the US and have been in the UK for 10 years. I’m
passionate about education and fully support the
Carswell ethos. I look forward to working with
the School as a Parent Governor.Tuesday 4th September 2018—INSET: school closed Monday 7th January 2019—Term 3 starts

More attic graffiti this week. I chose
these two because it makes me wonder
how life would have changed between
the first one, before WW2 and the one
on the right, just after WW2. How each
child would have been affected by it and
how it would have changed the school.

INSET DAY 25th July SCHOOL CLOSEDDear parents and carers,
It’s getting warm out there! We need to make sure we keep the children safe and
hydrated so next term can you ensure your child has a sun hat (if needed), sun
cream and a bottle of water in school.
I can’t believe how quickly this term has gone; the summer seems well underway
and our regular events such as our summer fair and Hill End are just around the
corner. You should have received a letter about the village fair we have in the Gar-
denorma during the summer fair – there are competitions for each age range so
check out the letter on page 7 of this publication for more details.
Thank you to all who agreed to advertise our fair outside their house– the money
raised (particularly with the current funding situation) is very useful.
On that note, another regular feature of our fair is The Big Dance. This year we
have decided the money raised from sponsorship and wristbands will be used to
fund our scrap pod and update our playground equipment. It is important our chil-
dren have a lively, learning rich environment to play in and we have many areas
we could develop and improve. The Big Dance will continue this year with Mrs
Auckland and the Big Dance Crew leading it on the stage on the day. This year’s
song is ‘Shut up and Dance’ by Walk the Moon.
As staff we deliberated over this song (chosen by the children) as the phrase used
in the lyrics, ‘shut up’ is unkind and discouraged. However, we also know that our
children are responsible and understand it’s in the context of a song and not to be
used with each other or to hurt feelings.
It was great to see Mrs Farr last week, she says she misses us and enjoyed judg-
ing the Bake Off. She had a lovely welcome from the chil-
dren, who crowded round her. She said she felt like a
movie star!
Be aware that on Monday 3rd June we have an INSET
day for teachers so the school is closed. The term starts
on Tuesday 4th June.
Have a happy half term,
See you soon.
