On Wednesday 23 September, a week of anxious waiting drew to a close with the announcement of the Learner Leaders for the 2020/2021 term of office. This is always a stressful time for the Grade 11s who have perhaps dreamed of stepping into this position since they first started at Rhenish Girls' High. We have so many very strong young women at Rhenish Girls' High and only a few can serve in this particular capacity. There are many more leadership roles into which the girls can step and each learner is encouraged to find the place where she can best serve her school. Congratulations to all of these young women who have been elected by their peers and by the staff to serve Rhenish over the coming year. May you bring to your position a fresh vision, personal commitment and integrity. M US I C DE P AR T ME N T "If everyone started off the day singing, just think how happy they'd be." Lauren Myracle, Shine "He who sings scares away his woes." Cervantes As South Africa dropped to level one of lockdown regulations, Rhenish's choir joined together for their first practice, something the girls had not experienced for nearly six months. The poignant words of "Irish Blessing" and "Dream a little dream of me" in an atmosphere of singing together was very moving and a moment of great memories. MA S T ER C L A S S - MA S T ER F UL L Y MA N A G ED An often postponed masterclass presented by Lauren Dasappa was well received by a number of voice learners. As a solo performer and lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Conservatoire, Lauren was reportedly very impressed by the quality of Rhenish's upcoming talent. She commended the girls on their responsiveness to her imput and was also aware of a great compassion and kindness amongst the girls. Well done Rhenish!
23 SEPTEMBER 2020 Climate strike Rhenishers Take a Stand When talking about the climate people used to say that they needed to save the planet for their children. As the youth, we need to save the planet for ourselves. Petra de Beer 25 September marked the day of the global climate strike. Youth stood up around the world and called for climate justice. Amidst the pandemic, this climate movement has been forgotten, left as a problem for everyone to deal with in the future. But we remembered. We fought to be heard. We fought for action to be taken now and not tomorrow. So, on Wednesday 23 September, we organised for a group of Grade 10s to take to the school with signs held high in solidarity with those protests that were happening that Friday. During second break we began in the main quad and moved around the school. Calling for action to take place not only in the big wide world, but at Rhenish as well.
The climate strikes that happened last week were a call for climate justice. Around the world, youth made the point that climate justice equals social justice, as both are intrinsically entwined. So some of us joined that call last week Wednesday, and we hope that everyone else joins us soon. We want system change, not climate change. Our planet is deteriorating and soon we will not be able to survive here anymore. There is no Planet B, Earth is our home and anything else is a copout. We fear this approaching mass extinction and we fear for everyone's wellbeing. So, we ask you, what are you doing to help?
AKKERDOPPIES- FEELING THE RHENISH LOVE "Our eyes are opened and our hearts are humbled when we experience community love like this." Mrs Kruger visited Akkerdoppies, recipients of 80 Rhenish blankets this year last week. " I was treated to a school song and thanks from 2 little classes. We sewed on a badge to identify which blanket belongs to whom - each child will have their blanket for as long as they stay at this little crèche. Akkerdoppies is in Stellenbosch and serves a relatively poor area. They get 2 large meals a day together with 2 snacks. A package of food for the weekend per child is also given. The classrooms are beautifully decorated, neatly presented and each child has a mattress to have a nap on every day ( and , now, a blanket too!) They take 2yr olds to 5 yr olds... for a full day. It is obviously under resourced and they can always do with stationery, pencils, toys and food.
