The Roots
and History
of American
LibertyRising high school sophomores,
juniors, and seniors are invited to
study the American experiment of
liberty under law at some of the most
important sites in the history of our
constitutional republic. Join Hillsdale
faculty and ambitious students from
all around the country on the campus
of Hillsdale College, at Hillsdale’s
Washington-D.C. home base, the Allan
P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional
Studies and Citizenship, and in the
historic Pennsylvania cities
Philadelphia and Gettysburg.
Your learning will come alive as you
stand face-to-face with history. You
won’t just read about the Declaration of
Independence or the U.S. Constitution,
you’ll stand in the room where both

were adopted, and see the original
documents for yourself; you’ll reflect on
past sacrifices at hallowed ground like

being made in real time as you stroll the
halls of Congress; you’ll visit the former
homes of presidents Washington and
D.C. Home Base.. Jefferson and be inspired by the example
of some of the greatest men and women
in the American story.Tentative Itinerary
Day 1 Mid-Day Arrivals to Detroit Metro Airport; Transfer to
Hillsdale Campus via Hillsdale Shuttle; Afternoon Check-in to
Residence Halls; Evening Orientation Activities.
Day 2 Campus Lectures: Classical and Medieval Roots of American
Liberty, The Anglo-American Colonies, The American
Revolution, The American Constitution, The New Regime:
Federalists and Republicans.
Day 3 Campus Lectures: Jacksonian Democracy, Slavery, The Civil
War, Reconstruction, The Urban-Industrial Revolution.
Day 4 Depart from Hillsdale by bus to Gettysburg, PA, Site of the
Civil War Battle Considered to be the War’s Turning Point;
Evening Cemetery Tour.
Day 5 Full Day of Sightseeing, including Guided Battlefield Tour,
Gettysburg National Military Park Museum, the Gettysburg
Cyclorama Depiction of Pickett’s Charge, and the Film “A New
Birth of Freedom.”
Day 6 Travel to Philadelphia, PA; City Sightseeing includes
Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell Center, Christ Church
and Burial Ground, The First Bank of the United States,
Congress Hall, and Old City Hall; Travel to the Capital.
Day 7 Morning Visit to the Galleries of the U.S. Senate and House
of Representatives; Guided Tour of the United States Capitol;
Visit the National Mall, with Monument Sites including the
Washington Monument, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln
Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, World War
II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial;
The White House.

Deal; Afternoon Journey to Mount Vernon, the Beloved
Home of the First President of the United States, George
Washington; See the President and First Lady’s Gravesite.
Day 9 All-Day Excursion to Monticello, the 5,000-acre
Plantation Once Home to Thomas Jefferson, Author of
the Declaration of Independence, Third President of the
United States, and Founder of the University of Virginia.
Day 10 Morning Kirby Center Lectures: The World Wars and The
Cold War, Civil Rights; Afternoon Visit to the National
Archives to View the Declaration of Independence and
the U.S. Constitution, and to the Smithsonian National
Museum of American History, Housing Priceless Artifacts
of American History.
Day 11 Morning Kirby Center Lectures: The Great Society,
The Cultural Revolution; Afternoon Visit to Arlington
National Cemetery with Sunset Parade and Concert
Featuring “The Commandant’s Own” United States
Marine Drum and Bugle Corps; Picnic Dinner at the
Performance.
Day 12 Drive from Washington to Hillsdale via Bus or Transfer to
Reagan National Airport for Individual Flights Home.

Prior to review, a submitted application form
should be supplemented by the following materials:
two letters of recommendation
One academic letter should be from a recent high school teacher,
and one personal letter from someone other than a relative.

Submit a copy of your ACT, CLT, SAT, PLAN, CLT10, or PSAT
scores. If you have not taken one of these tests, include a recent
written sample of your academic work at least two pages in length
but not more than five that includes a teacher’s evaluation.
