As you are continuing to get to know me and I, you, I have yet to share something that is very precious to me : Italy!
Maybe my soul once lived there and it lingers in me still.

When I was 18, I married my high school sweet heart. He was in the Air Force and we were sent to Northern Italy for
four years. Not only was I submersed into the culture, going to an international college, living amongst the locals, eat-
ing the amazing cuisine, learning Italian but I felt so at home, as if it was a part of me. I still love to visit Italy and
dream of some day living there part time. My last visit was in 2019 before COVID—and I’m grateful that I had a
chance to go before they shut things down. I would love to share some information with you about September in Italy.

My favorite month in Italy is September. In Tuscany, the grape harvest happens in September and is therefore big on
the agenda for a region to which wine is very important. When you consider a vineyard, I imagine you think of only
very large vineyards with hundreds of workers and of course many are very large but many are local growers, local
families, who sometimes harvest and sell their grapes but also make their own wine in their cellars. In fact when you
visit a local family, they always offer you a bottle of their wine, Vino Rosso, with an anti-pasta plate. Italians are some
of the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. You will never visit an Italian home and leave hungry or
thirsty because they make sure of that.

When September comes, it usually means only one thing in Italy: WINE HARVEST TIME!
All over the country in every region of the peninsula there is a lot of buzz and excitement around this event, which is
part of the culture and an historical tradition. It used to be a moment of celebration, everyone in the village would
come around and help within the vineyard, singing and dancing and it used to inspire poets and writers of the calibre
of Vivaldi, especially in his famous the Four Seasons concerto.

Facts about this time of year:
1. Italy is now the world’s largest producer of wine and produces 20% of the world’s wine.
2. The Italian word for ‘wine harvest’ is Vendemmia and it specifically refers to the harvest of the grapes destinated to
wine production, while the harvest of grapes for every day consumption as a fruit is just called Raccolta, or harvest.
3. Italy has been making wines for over 2800 years
4. Italy has 21 regions and 20 of them are wine regions
5. Each year, 1 in 50 Italians is involved with the grape harvest
6. In Italy the harvest happens usually between the end of August, September and occasionally in early October. In
countries where the climate is colder than Italy, the harvest happens usually later, to allow the grapes to lose part of
their water and increase as a result the sugary flavor
7. Wet grape = not-so-lucky grape! Rule number one of the good harvester is never to pick wet grapes. In fact, this
could delay the fermentation process.
8. Have you ever heard of Ice Wines? these are wines that are produced with grapes that have been exposed to at least
three months of freezing cold weather (usually during December—February) they are produced in Italy as well and are
called Vini di Ghiaccio
9. There are two main methods for the harvest: the first is the manual one where the farmers man-
ually pick each bunch cutting it from the vine with a pair of scissors. The second is the one executed
with the help of machines, especially when the vineyard is very large.
10. In the past, the pressing of the grapes, in Italian “la pigiatura”, used to be a procedurethe farmers
did with their bare feet. Crushing of the grapes starts the vinification, the biochemical process that
transforms the sugar and water contained in the grape into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

Happy Harvest! Robin Aguero, Community Services Director
