Project- Scope of Work
• Contract Bid amount: $56 Million
• Notice to proceed: June 2017
• Project involved widening and upgrades to 4.12 mile long section of Rte. 18 in Weymouth and Abington
• Changes will provide a uniform cross section (approx. 67 ft) with 2 lanes in each direction except a certain
  intersections where turning lanes will be added
• New alignment will include 5.5 ft sidewalks, 5 ft shoulders, will increase road capacity and safety for bike,
  peds and drivers
• New bridge:
  • Replacing 90-year-old bridge over MBTA Commuter Rail
  • 4 Span plate girder superstructure with new abutments
  • 364 feet long, 70 feet wide, and weighs 6 million pounds
  • Will be moved 52 feet to its final position using a sliding system with multiple jacks
• Contract completion date: May 2022, pushing to finish by end of 2021

Project Schedule
Work began in Spring 2017 with a Completion date of May
2022 (pushing to be completed by end of 2021)

Completed Work to date:
• All Utility Installation, Drainage & Sewer
• All Environmental Mitigation Areas Complete
• 90% of the sidewalk, curbing and paving complete
• 90% of the traffic signalization complete

Bridge Slide (Operation we are meeting on)
• To minimize impacts to the new bridge was built next to the
  final location and will be slid into place.
• Largest Bridge Slide that MassDOT has executed
• Requires 2 weekend closures of Route 18 and the
  Commuter Rail

Post Bridge Slide Work:
• Final Paving on Route 18 in Weymouth and Abington
• Demolish Temporary Support Structures Currently
  Supporting the Slide Bridge
• Landscaping, line striping, and traffic signalization testing

July 16-19 (Fri. – Mon) – Test Slide
 • Test Slide weekend required in order to test all equipment (Jacks, Hydraulics, Electronics,
   Power Systems & Backups, etc.)
 • Test slide required to be done for a minimum of 15ft laterally
 • Detour to be put into place @ 11pm and Rte. 18 shut down at bridge location shortly after
 • Railroad line shut down @ 11:25pm (after last train) pm Friday night
 • Rte. 18 Bridge roadway restored by 4AM Monday morning
 • Rail line restored by 4AM Monday morning

July 22-25 (Thur. – Mon.) – Full Slide
 • Full Slide weekend
 • Detour to be put into place @ 11pm Thursday 6/22 and Rte. 18 shut down at
   bridge location shortly after
 • Railroad line shut down @ 11:25pm (after last train) Thursday night
 • Same setup as Test
 • Full Slide will move bridge 52 Ft laterally to final location and alignment
 • Rte. . 18 Bridge roadway restored by 4AM Monday morning
 • Rail line restored by 4am Monday morning
Bridge Slide Procedure Misc.
 • Bridge will be lifted, a system of sliding pads and tracks will be installed between the bottom of
    the bridge and the top of the support system, bridge will be lowered back down onto the sliding
    equipment.

 • High-capacity horizontal jacks will push the bridge laterally to the Rail line final position
      • The horizontal jacks will push approximately 3 feet at a time
      • The bridge will be pushed approximately once every 5 minutes.
 • Bridge will be moved 52 Ft laterally to final location and alignment

 • When reaching the final position, the bridge will be raised again with jacks so that the sliding
    system can be removed, and the bridge will be placed on its final support bearings

 • Travel configuration will continue to be one lane in each direction until early fall 2021.
2 Weekend Road & Rail Closures
July 16-19 and July 22-26
Route 18 is closed and detoured onto Pond Street for all users-

MBTA Kingston/Plymouth Commuter Rail Line:
  • Buses will replace trains after the last train at 11:25 PM each weekend

Weekend Closures
 • Test Slide:
   Friday, July 16th at 11PM to Monday, July 19th at 4AM
 • Final Slide:
   Thursday, July 22nd at 11PM to Monday, July 26th at 4AM
Weekend Closure
 Pond Street Detour

• In place weekends of July 16-19 and
              July 22-26

• Same detour as 2019, when it was
   implemented for demolition and
            other work
Commuter Rail Impacts – MBTA Diversions
WHEN- July 17-18 and 23-25: Bridge Slide (two weekends)

Buses will replace trains on the MBTA Kingston/Plymouth Commuter Rail Line after last train at
11:25 pm.

• MBTA Kingston Commuter Rail Line Customers, traveling (NORTH) to Boston, will be directed to
  private bus carriers at the South Weymouth Commuter Rail Station. They will be taken to the
  Braintree Station and directed to board the Red Line train to continue their trip.
• MBTA Kingston Commuter Rail Customers, traveling (SOUTH) will be directed to private bus
  carriers at Braintree Station and transported to South Weymouth Commuter Rail Station to
  continue their trip.
• Keolis will be put up signs in the stations and provide public service announcements on the trains
  advising them of the change prior to and during the diversions.
• Commuters encouraged to use the MBTA Middleborough/Lakeville Commuter Rail Line during
  weekend closures, such as Holbrook/Randolph or Brockton.
