Reflection Page 3 Within a Community of Love (Our spiritual journey with the Trinity) My Dear Brothers and Sisters, In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, maybe the most basic of our Christian prayers. Such is the prayer by which we are incorporated into the Body of Christ in Baptism; the prayer by which we receive the fullness of the Spirit in Confirmation; the prayer by which we seal the sacrament of Matrimony and Ordination; the prayer by which we call upon the healing power of God in the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Healing of the Sick; and the prayer by which we express the central mystery of the Christian faith and of Christian life, the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, God revealing himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 261) The Incarnation of God’s Son, consubstantial with the eternal Father, and that the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in the name of the Son and by the Son from the Father is one and the same God. (CCC 262, 263) This is the God who is one, without equal, the supreme being who is unique, without equal, who alone is our origin and our ultimate goal. (CCC 228, 229) This is the God who reveals himself as He who is, the I am who am. (CCC 231) But unlike our normal understanding of mystery this is not a mystery to be solved but rather a reality to be celebrated and lived. For even though God reveals himself as Father, Son, and Spirit, God remains a mystery, As St. Augustine acknowledged if we were to understand God, he would not Be God. (CCC 230) Through the grace of our Baptism we are invited to share in the life of the Blessed Trinity, the divine persons, inseparable, and become part of the divine mission. (CCC 263, 267) But how do we understand and live this call in our lives? First we must begin by immersing ourselves in the life of God which begins as we enter into the intrinsic unity offered in our liturgical celebration of the Eucharist, the single act of worship in the liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharist, the Eucharistic table set by the Word of God in the scriptures and the Body of Christ brought forth by the work of the Spirit. (CCC 1346) Once filled at the source and the summit of our Christian Life (CCC 1324-1327) we must live as the Holy Trinity lives. In an Icon of the Trinity, created by Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev, the Trinity is depicted as sitting together around a table meal, the same table fellowship practiced by Jesus in his ministry, sharing as a community of love. The Holy One in the form of three, eating and drinking in infinite hospitality and utter enjoyment of each other in divine relationship. An icon, however, is intended to draw us into a deeper understanding, and if you look carefully at Rublev’s icon you will notice that, as the three gaze with deep respect on each other and share from their common bowl, the Spirit gestures toward an open space between them seeming inviting us into their loving relationship. Our spiritual journey with the Trinity invites us into our place at the table, a place that only we can take, and into joining their fellowship. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is our invitation to live our baptismal anointing of priest, prophet, and king with those around us. Beginning with our own families how do we live out this Trinitarian love? No matter what our family looks like how do we celebrate and protect the creation about us? How do we love in such a way that we place the needs of the other over our own desires? How do we sanctify the lives we share? From our family experience of a Trinitarian love, how do we live out that table fellowship of deep respect and shared needs, with those communities to which we belong; parish community, our places of work or school, the market place, our world; to insure respect and the common good? Can we enter into the civil dialogue not only with those we agree with but also with those who we disagree? Can we celebrate the dignity of every person we meet, seeing within them the creative presence of God? Can we recognize God in all of creation and work to fulfill the call of Pope Francis in Laudato Si? Are my words and actions consistent with my faith and the treasure of Catholic Social teachings? Truly living our basic prayer, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we will come closer to understanding God in our lives but more importantly understand ourselves in God. Living as the Body of Christ we will be able to become part of the creative process which will transform the face of the earth. May this be a week for us to take our place at the table and join in the Trinitarian fellowship of love. Peace and love, Dcn. Ed
