The Importance of AEDs in the Workplace
The use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
is one of the two vital skills needed to save the life of
a sudden cardiac arrest victim. The National Safety
Council combines both CPR and AED education into
one course because of their importance and need.

 • Response time is critical. Brain death begins
within 4-6 minutes of the sudden cardiac arrest
     (SCA) event.
 • The average time to respond to a 911 call in an
urban area is 7 minutes. (Expect longer response
times if your workplace is in a remote/rural area).
 • SCA survival rates have been observed as high as 70% when defibrillation occurs
within 4 minutes of the event.
 • For every minute without CPR and defibrillation, chances of survival from cardiac
     arrest decreases by approximately 10%.
 • American Heart Association (AHA) recommends placing an AED at three-minute
“drop to shock” intervals throughout the facility. (i.e. should take a person no
longer than 3 minutes round-trip to get the AED and back to the victim).
