QUALIT Y

In June 2017, the Hugh Baird University Centre
was awarded a Gold rating for its higher education
provision from a newly launched Government scheme.
The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) was introduced to provide evidence about the performance of the higher
education sector in the UK. Through the issuing of Gold, Silver or Bronze awards, the scheme provides students with
a picture of excellence in higher education teaching and learning. We were delighted to become one of an elite group
who achieved Gold.
The independent panel who assessed the Hugh Baird University Centre found:
● Students achieve consistently outstanding outcomes, with many students progressing to highly
    skilled employment.
● At its heart, the curriculum design was addressing the skills agenda set out by the Liverpool City Region
    Local Enterprise Partnership.
● The work undertaken by the Hugh Baird University Centre vastly improves the life chances of students
living in the Centre’s immediate locality.
● Exceptional levels of satisfaction in relation to support and assignment feedback.

Note: TEF gold rating awarded June 2017. Award valid up to summer 2021.

completed a level 3 qualification (i.e. A-levels, BTEC Extended Diploma or equivalent) as well
as a minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent including maths and English at grade 9-4 (grade A*-C
in the previous grading system). However, for applicants who do not meet the standard entry
requirements, Optional Integrated Foundation Entry routes and Access to Higher Education
courses are available and usually require lower level academic qualifications (see pages 22
to 25 for more details, visit the relevant course pages on our website or speak to our Student
Services Team on 0151 353 4444). Relevant work/life experience may also be taken into
consideration on an individual basis, so don’t be put off if you don’t meet the stated criteria.

     WITH OPTION

You will see throughout this guide that we offer an Optional Integrated Foundation Entry
route with many of our Foundation Degrees. These programmes are approved by the
University of Central Lancashire and are designed for those who want to study for a
Foundation Degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications to start just yet.
They are an ideal option if:
 ● You’re struggling to get the grades you need to enter the Foundation Degree course.
 ● Your chosen subjects at BTEC or A-level aren’t appropriate for the Foundation Degree you
      would like to do.
 ● You’ve been out of education for a while and want a bit more time to settle in and build up
      your knowledge of a subject.

Taking the Optional Integrated Foundation Entry route means you will get that additional year of tuition (two
years if studying part time) and more time to prepare for study at Foundation Degree level.

Our Foundation Degrees with Optional Integrated Foundation Entry are
currently available in the following subjects:

 ● Business and Management
 ● Computing
 ● Creative Make Up Design and Practice 1
 ● Dementia and Assisted Living in Health and Social Care 1
 ● Digital Imaging and Photography 1
 ● Engineering (Advanced Manufacturing)
 ● Fashion and Textiles 1
 ● Graphic Arts 1
 ● Health and Social Care 1
 ● Interior and Spatial Design 1
 ● Mental Health and Wellbeing 1
 ● Moving Image Production 1
 ● Visual Merchandising and Promotional Design 1

The foundation entry element of some of our foundation degrees is generic so may be delivered in classes made up
of students from other related programmes.

Taking the Optional Foundation Entry route usually
adds a year on to your Foundation Degree (two years
if studying part time). This means it will take you three
years in total to achieve your Foundation Degree if
studying full time (or up to five years if you choose to
study part time). Studying full time often only means
attending the University Centre for up to three days
per week.
