Prayer of the Faithful

Let us bring our needs and the needs of the world to the God who has invited us to
change our ways and follow the path to holiness.
For our Church as we proclaim Jesus’s call to repentance and discipleship, let us pray to
the Lord.
For those who live in our cities large and small, who struggle against crime, violence, and apathy on a
daily basis, let us pray to the Lord.
For all those who hear Jesus’ call to the priesthood and religious life, for wise and understanding di-
rectors of their formation, and for the support of their families and loved ones, let us pray to the Lord.
For all those who live and work on the sea: for fishers, sailors, oil
workers, researchers, and others; for success and safety, let us
pray to the Lord.
For everyone in our nation and community to respond generously
to the call to consideration of their neighbor as we all work to mit-
igate the effects of the coronavirus, let us pray to the Lord.
For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID-19, let
us pray to the Lord.
For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our hearts; for all
our intentions spoken and unspoken, let us pray to the Lord.
O God,
you call us to repentance and discipleship.
Teach us to change our hearts and follow you faithfully.
We ask for this and all these our prayers
in the name of your Son and our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Penitential Rite

Standing together in the presence of the
Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins
and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is
really less about our sins than it is about God’s
mercy. It is not a time for individual confession,
like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, ra-
ther, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the
mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own
weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the mi-
raculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in
the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the
words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful
man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more
aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the
more awareness we also have of our sin-
fulness, our weakness.
The penitential rite of the Mass takes
several forms, from the traditional Confit-
eor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or
sung by the deacon or cantor with re-
sponses by the entire assembly. The
penitential rite always includes the words
Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord,
have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This an-
cient Greek prayer came to the Roman
liturgy from the East, and still echoes in
many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite
Churches. These words turn our gaze
from our own weakness to the gentle-
ness, the kindness, the forgiving love of
Christ.

24 Tháng Giêng - Hãy Triệt Hạ Thập Giá
Gibert Keith Chesterton, một văn sĩ Công giáo người Anh, qua đời năm 1936, đã mô tả thảm họa của vô
thần trong một quyển tiểu thuyết mang tựa đề: "Bầu trời và Thập Giá". Một giáo sư vô thần tên là Lucifer được
ông cho ngồi bên cạnh một tu sĩ tên là Michel trên một chuyến máy bay xuyên qua Anh quốc.
Khi máy bay đi qua London, giáo sư Lucifer bỗng nhìn thấy thập giá trên tháp chuông nhà thờ chánh tòa.
Không tự chế được, ông đã thốt lên lời sỉ vả đối với Kitô Giáo. Vị tu sĩ mới xin phép kể câu chuyện như sau:
"Tôi cũng biết có một người thù ghét thập giá như ông. Bất cứ nơi nào có thập giá, ông ta cũng tìm đủ mọi
cách để triệt hạ cho bằng được. Bao nhiêu tác phẩm nghệ thuật có hình thập giá ông đều xé nát. Ngay cả chiếc
thập giá bằng vàng trên cổ người vợ, ông cũng tìm cách giành giật để kéo ra khỏi người bà. Ông nói rằng thập
giá là một biểu trưng của sự độc ác dã man, hoàn toàn đối nghịch với niềm vui, với cuộc sống.
Ngày nọ, không còn chịu đựng nổi hình thù của thập giá nữa, ông đã leo lên tháp chuông nhà thờ của giáo
xứ, tháo gỡ thập giá và ném xuống đất. Sự thù hận đối với thập giá không mấy chốc đã biến thành điên loạn…
Một buổi chiều mùa hè nóng bức nọ, ông đứng tựa vào một balcon gỗ, miệng phì phà khói thuốc. Bỗng chốc,
ông thấy nguyên chiếc balcon gỗ biến thành một đạo binh thánh giá. Rồi trước mặt, đằng sau lưng ông, nơi nào
cũng có thập giá. Hoa cả mắt lên, ông cầm chiếc gậy trên tay để đánh đổ tát cả những cây thập giá. Vào trong
nhà, bất cứ những gì làm bằng gỗ cũng được ông nhìn thấy với hình thù của thập giá. Không còn dùng gậy để
đạp đổ nữa, người đàn ông đành phải dùng đến lửa mới may ra tiêu diệt được thập giá. Ngọn lửa bốc cháy
thiêu chụi căn nhà. Ngày hôm sau, người ta tìm thấy xác của người đàn ông đáng thương trong dòng sông bên
cạnh nhà.
Câu kết luận mà văn sĩ đã đặt trên môi miệng vị tu sĩ là: "Nếu bạn bắt đầu bẻ gãy thập giá, bạn sẽ không
chóng thì chày phá hủy chính cái thế giới có thể sống được này". Với cái chết của Ðức Kitô, thập giá trở thành
biểu trưng của một sự chiến thắng: đó là chiến thắng của Tình yêu trên hận thù. Nơi nào có thập giá, nơi đó có
người còn tin ở sức mạnh của tình yêu. Ðạp đổ thánh giá có nghĩa là nâng cao hận thù chết chóc lên cao và
chối bỏ tình yêu. Một thế giới không có tình yêu là một thế giới của chết chóc. Bất cứ một con người có lý
luận bình thường nào cũng có thể thấy được điều đó.
Ngày nay, con người vẫn còn
tiếp tục chối bỏ và chà đạp thập giá.
Không cần phải leo lên tháp
chuông nhà thờ để có thể triệt hạ
thập giá; hình thù của thập giá, dấu
chỉ của Tình Yêu, đã được vẽ trên
mỗi một con người. Xúc phạm đến
con người cách này hay cách khác
cũng đã là một triệt hạ thập giá rồi.
